He was sick when he did this performance which makes it even more impressive. Apparently he had a fever of 102! He not only has this wonderful singing voice (he was trained as a Cantor in the Jewish church )but also a lovely speaking voice. He's very eloquent. He could read the phone book and I'd be in awe! A truly compassionate, thoughtful, genuine man. I want to be his friend 😊

I saw a few people mention that he was sick, you would never know and what a pro! Love hearing about his singing background too. I’ll definitely be checking out more from Disturbed 👍

I couldn't have said it better myself! This old lady is smitten by David Draiman. I wish he would record some audiobooks/children's stories!

He wasn't "Sick". This interview he explains his vocal injury the day he was to sing on "Conan" ...the discussion is at the 1:14:08 kzread.info/dash/bejne/oad2xLOFmLLWaKQ.html ! He is simply amazing and I love to listen to him sing. In concert, he is known to sit during intimate songs such as this to draw the crowd in even more.
Disturbed is a metal band but David was classically trained as a cantor when a child and takes great care of his voice.
The audience gave them a 10 minute standing ovation at the end. He also did this performance with the flu and a temp of 103. It was almost canceled, but they let him sit for the performance so he wouldn't fall down.

that's crazy. The atmosphere ended up being even better with him sitting

I can only imagine the feeling the audience must have felt
David is just off an off charts talented, controlled vocalist. The entire band and this arraingment of musicians is powerful.
I love what David and the band have done with this song. They moved it from a song you've heard to something you're forced to listen to. Disturbed is a heavy metal band. All I knew about them was that there was lots of screaming. This song, in all of the video versions, has been viewed more than a billion times. It is not like anything you'd expect from them. My first listen was a military tribute video. The second was the official video and, and finally, the Conan show. I like the Conan version the best. David was actually sick during this performance and still nailed it. Something I can recommend. BESTE ZANGERS, Floor Jansen & Henk Poort, Phantom of the Opera. Nice duet.
I have always been a fan of Disturbed. When I heard they were doing a cover of this song, I was disappointed because I am not a fan of cover songs. And then I heard it. I grew up with the original, singing it in 4th grade music class, learning about its meaning. THIS...this made my eyes well up...gave me chills. David's voice is amazing. This cover is amazing.
Instantly impressed with how you noticed and connected with his stage presence and eye contact to start the performance. First I've seen that called out.
This is my favorite version of The sounds of silence. I absolutely love this man's voice. And all of his.

You will LOVE David’s speaking voice. Disturbed is one of my favorite bands. Have seen them in concert a couple of times. They are amazing. The interaction with the fans is incredible. I can’t say enough about them.

Thanks for an authentic reaction. That one was awesome!!! Hate the 2nd time reaction fakes. Very nice! Note: If you want respect and views, ‘1st’ time reactions only. Those with a brain can tell.

Best Cover Ever!!!
David matched the lyrics with passion and emotion... I feel this emotion
There is a video on KZread, that was released just last month (Aug.), of him stopping a show to give comfort to a 12 yo girl that was at the show with her parents. It just shows the kind of man he is! He truly cares about his fans!
I absolutely love this song and this version. I can’t tell you how many times I have listened to it and I still get chills, WOW thank you for sharing and I truly enjoyed your comments.

Yep - full-body chills, hair standing up on my arms, and sometimes hot flashes. I've watched close to a hundred of these reaction vids from professionals/musicians/producers/etc. and am always looking for new ones. I will never tire of this performance!!
I really enjoyed your reaction - thanks. You'll get comments repeating the internet myth that he was "sick" during this performance, like "A fever of 105! Deathly ill and had to be rushed to the hospital! Had to sit down because he was so sick" (he always sat for this song) and so on. Actually all he had was a lesion on one of his vocal cords, which required him to sing slightly differently. He says this in his interview with Elizabeth Zharoff on her channel "The Charismatic Voice."
As an song producer, I notice at least Four (4) Transitions of his vocal range, intensity and emotion as the song progresses. . . MOST Impressive! His emotional delivery is matching the lyrical content.
If you want to have a good cry, listen to him singing Disturb's song "Hang On to Memories." With only these two songs, I'd never have guessed that he's a heavy metal singer. I've only learned about them in the last week (I'm 76 and a classical music lover.) and have listened to a wide variety of their music in the last few days. There are at least half a dozen of their songs that I really love. Color me surprised!! David was trained as a young man as a Jewish cantor (I don't remember the Hebrew word) and also had classical training. In this Conan performance he was sitting because he had a high fever and was very ill and his mates were afraid he might pass out if he stood too long.
He was so sick singing this and as usual nailed it. Love David Draiman and Disturbed
Yes! Aren't you so glad you finally checked this out? I just discovered it a few months ago, and was absolutely obsessed with it for nearly a month.🙂 My favorite cover of all time perhaps.
You are the first vocal coach that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Excellent reaction.
I love how people expect this performance to be much like the original Simon and Garfunkel, and surprise! I don't consider this as a cover song, as there is so much difference between the two versions. David took this great hit to a higher level.
This performance is great but I like to see reactions to the music video too for the powerful story it tells

Yes, agree. Both versions are awesome.
Disturbed has been my favorite band since I heard them 13 years ago. David's voice and performances, he was trained by opera singers if I'm not mistaken, and along with the band's talent is just a powerhouse.
You have to watch the official video puts it more in context but excellent reaction your the only one that has noticed his stage presence.❤️🤘😎
The live version is hands down my favorite
The piano is perfectly added to the song and the other musical instruments added to the drama of the sound
Down With the Sickness is one of Disturbed's biggest hits. It would also qualify for the aforementioned shocker if you listen to the full version. And, fair enough, it is pertinent to the message of the song but the language at the end of the song is pretty strong. I'd recommend The Light or Stricken to start with. They have a great discography. 🤘🤘 Enjoy.
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He is so unique as he actually puts vibrato on his distortion!....also VERY difficult to do...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho.
I was impressed when I heard the recorded version, but I'm even more impressed with this live performance 👏👏👏

even more impressive when you learn that he was actually sick when doing this, hence why he was sitting down.
I just love Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence
Just watched them perform this song live on August 11th. So Epic!
The most amazing thing about this performance , the American audience stayed silent till the end . Fantastic performance much better than the video has to LIVE
Norma here. Grew up loving Simon and Garfunkel’s version of this song, but this performance blew me away. He has an awesome voice and really brought forth the true meaning behind this song. I loved hearing and watching your reactions.
Thank you for picking the live version. It's so much better
Since he is so emotionally attached to his singing, performing gives him energy. That helped him get through the song.
I love live performances as well, but in this case he was sick....and the video is just perfect for the song. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you watch it in comparison! David Draiman is classically trained, & was a Cantor. He seriously considered becoming a Rabbi....so if he had, we wouldn't have the opportunity to hear his phenomenal voice! My daughter just saw them about a month ago, & it was awesome. He has had trouble with his voice off & on for a while now, but the night Kristen saw them his voice was in fine shape.
Listened to this 100 times for all the reasons you say. Just subscribed, mainly because of how real you are and expressive, and present. I am a faaaan!
Another great metal vocalist to react to is Bruce Dickinson from the band Iron Maiden. There are quite a few live performances to choose from. The song Hallowed Be Thy Name is probably my favorite.

Another awesome singer that even Bruce has praised would be Ronnie James Dio.
I love this version better than the original
Another great live performance by David and Disturbed is The Night (live in Raleigh NC). Great showcase of his vocals!
Even when David closed his eyes, he was singing of "the flash of a neon light" for at least one point and it felt almost as if he were reminiscing on how bright it was.
I cry every time I hear him sing this great song I have probably heard it 1000 times or more and I still have the same reaction

Me too
I saw somewhere that the original Simon and Garfunkel version was a warning of what would happen if we stopped listening to each other. This version is the anger at us not listening to the warning we received many decades ago.
David wasn't feeling good at this performance, but still pulled off a great version. You didn't mention it, but can I assume that you know this is a cover of a 1965 Simon & Garfunkel song? Paul Simon enjoyed this version. Good guess. Yes, their originals are metal. To hear that , try Down With the Sickness, Striken, Stupify, or for a newer song Hey You.
This may be his most powerful song but listen to “Hold on to Memories” it just makes you want to hear more & more of him!! Simply amazing!! ❤️😂😊❤️
Most people don’t know this, but David was actually classically trained. He travels with his band and several voice coaches.
As a Simon & Garfunkel fan, it took me a while to appreciate Disturbed, but since then it has grown on me to where I like this version even better. It is obviously Disturbed's version that got everybody else doing "The Sound of Silence." Pentatonix version is beautiful and Geoff's is hauntingly unique and beautiful in its own way.
His bow at the end was perfect after his performance! PERFECT !
I don't know any other Disturbed songs so it's like their fans have been enjoying his voice for years and some of us never heard that gift!
He is primarily a HEAVY metal singer. He can turn that grit on and off throughout his upper range. He also never stops learning his craft. He studies many different singing styles. A very unique person.

Also that closing down thing he does is actually him singing through the ending consonants.
I have never been a fan of the heavy metal genre. I have to admire his talent and the passion that he put into his performance. I can't say that I particularly like the song of his voice, but again it is obvious that he has a lot of talent. Since Geoff Castellucci is my favorite male vocalist, I am sure you know which performance I liked the best. No disrespect meant to David Draiman. Very good reaction and analysis.
A couple of fun facts: He sung this deeply sick, to the point he apparently barely remembers the performance. Also while he is a metal singer by default, he was trained in operatic singing as a boy which you can hear from his clear notes. That ability of his to drop into and out of vocal fry on a dime... So impressive.

Aren't alot of metal singers either trained professionally or straight up just "oddly talented" at opera style singing? It's something I keep hearing countless times.

It also applies to the writing. Check out the Gamazda arrangement of Master of Puppets. The original music is stunning. Not to mention her performance.
Hi Marcel! Hi YOSC! This is one of the great live performances. David Draiman trained as a cantor, or so I'm told. It's beautiful. If you want shocking from Disturbed, the song for you is Down With The Sickness. There are also some more Angelina EP songs to get through. I'm really torn between recommending Good In Goodbyes or All My Fault. I'll let you decide. :) Say Hello to Chuckles!
This is one of their best. You'll obviously be recommended "Down with the Sickness" since it's their most popular song and it is a good one. That said, I'd recommend "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and "A Reason to Fight" for a couple great ones with really good messages behind them.
Resonance, the incredible resonance, of his voice is what I always think of when I think of this performance. That, and the way he reaches in and grabs my soul.
This is a song (as you may already know) that was written by Paul Simon in 1964. I remember hearing it, as a kid, and it was NOT my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song until last week when I heard Disturbed's rendition. When you hear David Draiman sing it you feel it rather than hear it. Many great metal songs are like that. For me, I like the video more, because the imagery is gorgeous. And it IMHO a uniquely NYC song, If you have ever lived or worked in Manhattan, it is a NOISY place where people just pass you by. Always in a rush!!! We have to remember the decade when it was written. Now the song has a different meaning. David was a Cantor when he was young. What a voice!!!
You need to look up the couple who were ice skaters who did their routine to Disturbed singing Sounds of Silence. It was several years ago. It was an awesome performance!
Would you believe David was very sick with flu during this performance. Thats why he was sitting down. He can actually sing , and very well.
Yes David was sick during this performance . During an interview when the performance was mentioned he explained that he had a high fever and a lesion on his vocal cord at the time and was taking heavy doses of steroids to try to keep the swelling down. How he managed to sing at all let alone so brilliantly is astounding.
He is a metal singer but he is classically trained (I think he was a Jewish Cantor if I remember correctly). If you want to hear one of their metal songs try "down with the sickness". He can do some really cool things with his voice. He has a very unique voice. You are right that he typically sings with grit and he held back for most of the sound of silence and song it clear until near the end, which I think was a brilliant choice. Adding the grit as the song built just gave it that much mroe power.
Saw Disturbed just a few weeks ago. Seen them 8 times and this was their best performance ever. David is struggling with some real sh!t. Look deeper and you'll find what he's struggling with. Respect and love....
David has been singing since he was a child which is why he is so amazing and so comfortable with what he does.
David Draiman is one of my favorite rock singers and I absolutely love what he did with this song! I’m going to see them live in March 2024 and I can’t wait!
holy, thank you very much for your reaction! i love this song, i like to see so many peaple reacting to it! Thanks again, hope to see more from you!
This is great but you really have to watch the music video. Takes this song to another level
Fun fact Disturbed and Jinjer are touring together at the moment. I would like to see a reaction to Jinjer's Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019.

That is a fun fact, love it! PS Perennial reaction coming soon. 😊
David took this song to another level.
You absolutely nailed it about the bands normal music. Awesome diagnosis. Absolutely stunned me.
What’s even more impressive is that David was sick with a 103 degree fever when they performed this.
He said being in front of thousands of people doesn't scare him but being in front of the cameras made him so nervous.
Check out their cover of Stings If I Ever Lose My Faith it’s got a little more metal in it but it’s still beautiful
Grew up with Simon & Garfunkel, didn’t receive the message til my fav Metals band “DISTURBED” brought the message of another Artists message who predicted this “tech” world we have succumb by I must say it was done with such Respect and Grace how do you not feel something right?
Really enjoyed your reaction. Nice job.
The reason he looked to his right is because he was getting over the flu and the crew added autotune and thats why he looked to his right he did not want autotune he was not happy.
The Official Music Video adds so much to the meaning of the song.
It was said from another reactionary commentary within a post, and I quote, "Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning. Disturbed's version is rage because the warning was ignored
I love a good power/monster ballad. Most metal singers are 5 octave and I love when they get a chance to really show off their depth of both singing and lyrics. And with David being a trained cantor on top. This is probably my new fav power ballad. And Paul Simon even praised the cover too.
Glad you did the live version. It’s better than studio. Great reaction.
Thank you for understanding the complexity of his performance.
David Draiman is a Rock/Metal singer but he was classically trained as a cantor. It is said about this song that Simon & Garfunkel gave us a warning with there song and Disturbed version is the anger that we didn't heeded that warning. Paul Simon even said that he loves this version.
He is the lead singer in Antal band. He also wasn't at his best in this. Not only was he sick but not long after this he had surgery on his cords
To get a full range of Disturbed songs I'd recommend the following: Down with the Sickness Hold on to Memories A Reason to Fight
I would love to recommend The Light, A Reason to Fight, Down with the Sickness, Hold on to Memories, Hey You, and Into the Fire. These are all different but all show the amazing talent of Disturbed and David Draimen.
The light is another amazing song and uninvited guest
You should give a listen to the live performance in Houston when he sings this with Myles Kennedy.
David of Disturbed, He was full of flu that night on Conan! but still producing a masterful performance! You have to get the lyrics and watch the official video, (another masterpiece) to be on your own and play a couple of times, as it brings out emotions from your subconscious, that I couldn’t tell anyone, yet this beautiful version, has done that, not in a bad way but that’s how this masterpiece of a video and the Disturbed, which I will say now, is the best cover, ever, that can make me think, also produce tears about things I should of done earlier in life, Creating tears which is fine. Get the lyrics and official video, shut the door and play and watch. Stupendous!! Ian from U.K. ❤ 25/10/23
Hold on to memories and The Light are my favorites
5:05 "he's getting close to the bottom of his range there" Oh you have no idea!
Great reaction! Thank you so much for sharing.
Another great cover to check out is Chris Cornell - "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince cover made famous by Sinead O'Conner) [Live @ SiriusXM] | Lithium.
While I agree listening to the live vversion is usually the best option, this might be one occasion I might not. He was really sick this night and it shows if you've heard him more. Incredible he sounded this good sick as he was, but he can do it better too.
David can sing anything there is nothing he couldn't sing.
never forget he had the flue with a 104% fevor when he sang this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i believe paul simon like other artists that had songs covered said its NO LONGER MINE????
You might also want to check out the Pentatonix cover of this song.
I love how if I go down the comments Dave had a fever of 101… next comment 102 ….next comment 103 etc
Please also do The Light by them. do the official video.
Over 1 billion vews on the official video. It is kinda cool.😎
You can't hear this song you feel it !!!
David Dramian is Classically trained. He has the biggest vocal range. I loved them before and more. He is definitely amazing showcasing it perfectly. Why stop it all the time? It takes the reaction more inaccurate. 😊 He was also recovering from being sick.
Paul Simon was quite impressed with David Draiman's performance and has put a link to the official video on his own personal media.
He amazed you and we all know it and join you.
How can you not be shocked by that? He goes from E-minor to F-sharp. I know you don't have that range, very few have that.
