This was my absolute favorite cartoon when I was about 7 or 8, used to stop what I was doing to race home to watch it in the afternoon. It's interesting how the earlier episodes were set in a swamp (which makes sense for a muskrat) then it later changed to the hills. Or maybe they mixed the two together. I remember the show's ending, Deputy Dawg was on a stage, saying, "Now's the time for us to go, but we'll be back next week with a brand new show,", then the curtain would crash down on his foot, he'd hollar "Ow, my toebone" (one of his catch phrases) then get in an argument behind the curtain with Muskie, who was operating it--"Dag-nab-it Muskie..." (his ultimate catch phrase).

Jude F. In West Virginia we loved Deputy Dog. But most people think we are uneducated hillbillies. Not true,my wife has Doctorate in Education, myself 25 years in the Military with a MBA degree. Just because we talk funny does not mean we are uneducated. That's OK we are used to it.

In the first few episodes it was taking place in Florida. I remember one episode referencing tourists and how dangerous route 301 was even back then. Later it drifted northward to Mississippi and then to Tennessee hill country. I guess each writer had a favorite part of the south to target.

@@FredFlixWe were. My grandfather bought a color set for each of his children, including my mother. It was a big event in the neighborhood when it arrived (took four men, almost like pallbearers) to bring it into the house- more like a heavy piece of furniture. Everybody came over to watch it. My dad rushed home to watch Deputy Dawg; I also remember him saying he especially liked the quality of the color in The Flintstones. The next year (1965) was the turning point for shows being broadcast in color.

My mother was a very talented artist, back in the 30`s her high school art teacher sent Terrytoones some of her art work. They asked the teacher to send the artist to interview for a job. When my mom showed up they were surprised she was a girl, her work had only her initials in corner and not her full name. The manager took her out to the floor and asked "what do you see"? My mom said the floor was all men working. "We don`t hire girls"

Same here, from Raleigh County. Always loved Deputy Dawg. Ultimately, it is not a matter of Southerners or Northerners. There are stupid people to be found everywhere, especially in isolated communities where there is not much interaction with others. After all, ow many stereotypical New Yorker characters have we all laughed at over the years? We all need to relearn how to laugh at ourselves so we can make it through life without exploding.

I recall seeing a few Deputy Dawg cartoons in the '60's. They were OK. But shows like Johnny Quest or the Jetsons were more my speed as a kid then (and as an adult now, too). I don't remember seeing any Deputy Dawg's shorts at the movies, though. I suspect Mr. Allen had to keep a supply of handkerchiefs handy when voicing Deputy Dawg in order to mop up the slobber he made! No cartoons like that any more. Good stuff.

He held that early design for about the first 7 cartoons. Then he was gradually redesigned over the course of the first season. By the start of season 2, his tin badge was now gold, and his nose, which had formally been big and black was now small and red, and he was now the version of DD that we all know.
