Dissolving Rock with Acid Exposing Crystals | Muriatic Acid | Tips and Tricks Rockhounding

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Now that winter is approaching Western North Carolina it is time for prepping and cleaning gem and mineral specimens I have collected throughout the year. recently I have discovered a vein of calcite and quartz at my Two-Tone Prospect. trying to free the quartz crystals I was damaging and breaking the bottom so I thought of another way around this problem. I removed large sections of the quartz and calcite vein and took it home to dissolve the calcite using muriatic acid. This video shows you the process and how to use muriatic acid for cleaning and exposing crystals underneath it. This was a very rewarding process from start to finish. Feel free to ask any questions or comment below. This technique can benefit you for future cleaning and prepping gems and minerals. it is shocking to see such a beautiful quartz cluster hidden below.

@@HighCountryRocksthanks buddy just to clarify when you said to add the distilled water to stop orange staining on the piece of quartz after the acid has done its thing do you remove the piece from the solution and place in clean water before adding baking soda to stabilise for pouring down the drain or do you leave the piece in the whole time? thank you

Maybe someone can help. I live in Jonesboro GA. We were planting some trees at our house and noticed little gold flakes in the soil just about everywhere. We also were digging up huge chunks of quartz. I do know there was a gold rush in north Atlanta in the early 1800s. We are further south. I gathered, after some research, that the gold flakes are likely Micah deposits(which actually may be come valuable in the near future due to their use in computer parts?). Anyway, i started saving all the rocks that Ive been digging up. I broke open an 8inch by 4inch piece of quartz allong a natural fracture it had, revealing some dark contracting color inside, giving it a camo type pattern. There is a lot of the same black stuff in the other stones as well. I do know that nearby Stone Mountain, was made from an ancient valcano eruption millions of years ago. My questions are Is this black stuff valcanic ash? Or possibly part of the "black mat layer" from the Younger Dryas boundry? Is it worth my time cleaning these or just selling them to someone that will care for them? Is there a chance some of the gold flakes could be actual gold since gold has been found in this general area? Thanks!

Just make sure to use that distilled water and then soak it in baking soda and distilled water as long as you were soaking it in acid. That will ensure you don't get the yellowing effect Good luck feel free to send me pictures on Instagram it's the same name highcountryocks Thank you for your comment.

It will help start cleaning the process. I just made a video about using acids and other cleaning mixes on corundum. It can really mess up your corundum if you mix it to strong it to long. Make sure not to put your best ones in while learning the ratio.

So it has to be distilled water, not tap? Cuz I really want to use tap. (It’s all I have) Lol. Also- I just found a bunch of opal!! A lot of it covered in hard bentonite clay (I think)it’s not coming off soaking in water. Can I use muriatic acid, oxalic acid, or, iron out, on it with out damaging the opal? If not do u know how to clean it? And one more thing- I’m in Az summer just hit- so our hounding season is ending and it’s now our cleaning time. lol funny huh!!- those ice cycles are looking mighty fine to me right about now!!!
