The Russian Roulette scene is still vivid in my mind years after watching it, despite never having actually played this game.

It's such a tense scene! How did you come by the scene without playing it?

killer7 is an incredible _vibe._ It makes me _feel_ things--empowered, horrified, confused, reverent. I have to pore over dialogue two or three times to understand the complexities of the surface-level plot, but the emotions are always accessible.

Thank you for this video! Killer7 resonated me more than any other game growing up. Although the world of Killer7 is unbelievably violent, I've always found it fascinating how disconnected Garcian is from the violence. Whenever human life is taken within the proximity of Garcian, it's never lingered on. Either the camera flashes away from the dead body, the camera takes the perspective of the dead body to look at Garcian, or the cutscene just ends as soon as the dead body is shown. The only time Garcian really comes face to face with violence is in the flashbacks in the Hotel and with the death of Matsuken. If there was ever a piece of art that captured desensitization to violence in the 2000s, it's Killer7.

Incredibly tight review of such a dense game, I definitely missed most of this when I played it so long ago. Time for a revisit!

I appreciated hearing more about the Tokyo subway attacks and the anpo treaty. The Japanese consciousness of playing Killer7 is an aspect I haven’t had much access to in my research of the game, despite it being a Japanese game itself. Thank you for the insight. :)

It's crazy how after researching this relatively short game so much there's still so meaning readings of it that absolutely blow my mind. Never realized how similar the Heaven's Smiles are to cults, but when you mentioned how they reveal their presence by laughing while you still can't see them it clicked. Awesome analysis of this game. Thank you for making it.

I was 16 when I first played killer 7. It was such a radical departure given it's M rating, visual style and mechanics. It burned it's way into my teenage brain cells. It took me years to rediscover it but boy I'm glad I did. Nice video.

"You just don't get M-rated games featured in Nintendo Power, this prominently." Capcom had more faith in this game than RE4.

I'm glad you mentioned the Tokyo subway attacks, I feel like its an event people don't talk about enough, despite how much it ruptured Japan at the time. If you're looking for a show that sort of explores the theme of cults, individuality, and the effect of such things in modern day, please check out Mawaru Penguindrum. It's a metaphorical allegory for the tokyo gas attack and I believe it presents a lot of similar, complicated but heavy symbolism that killer7 does. Maybe not as politically charged, but important nevertheless.

@@AlexandraOrlando hell yeah no problem! It's pretty weird and the director is known for getting a bit more experimental with his works. Warning ya know it's a bit slow, the first 10ish eps are exposition but the climax is really worth it imo. Hope you enioy!

I really enjoyed this video, and a lot of your focus on the narratives speaking to both east and west. It actually opened my mind a bit on your highlight on cults and the historical differences the word "terrorism" means to American and Japanese people. I hope you do more works on this game or at the very least, keep true to this format of other games and media on the obscure side of things. I cannot tell you how much Killer7 has defined a lot of my creative interpretations and DNA, and I hold it to be a very enlightening and underrated piece of art that I hope more people come back to. Suda has done well with the No More Heroes franchise as a whole, but if he never returns to his more absurd and surreal routes, I at least hope more people like you keep reminding others of this gem.

Holy shit the song at the very end IMMEDIATELY hit me from way back when I played this. (also - very solid video... I loved Killer 7 until somewhere late in the game, where it lost me. Subsequently, it left me with an overall negative feeling towards it - your video helped reignite how impressed I was for the most of it, and is making me wonder if perhaps I was unfair with my final assessment)

Wow cloudman chapter is relevant now? I remember some fans said cloudman chapter just a filler not the main story. Sure it because he had nothing to do with the whole japan Us relation and Matsuken he just happened had one of the Yakumo files and use it to create fake Ulmeyda city.
