Dissecting Ironman Kona: The Bike Course

Спорт

We have decided to come back out to Kona for some testing with the team. We are looking forward to sharing what we captured with you guys over the next few weeks. This style of video will be a bit different from the standard video. Here is a video of us testing my lactate and weight loss on the Ironman World Championship Bike course with a bit of sarcasm.

I think it’s unbelievable that a pro at this level shares this information and testing feedback to the public and in all view of his competitors, big respect

Everyone knows what goes into it... ALOT AND ALOT of volume. It is the specific day in day out training that is interesting, his competeors are already doing this... Just consistency and time it takes is very overwhealming to think.

@The Millennial Triathlete yep. But they're indirectly going for course PBs. New to watching the sport myself. I only road bike and run. Useless in the pool. If the strong swimmers get a lead and can maintain they pretty much " win" anyways. That is why i'm guessing lucy charles has such goof placing.

I am quite surprised at the number of haters commenting about the testing;everything that’s wrong etc etc. The bottom line is this: the separation between The top 30-50 world class Ironman triathletes is razor thin. Lionel hasn’t won it yet.....he needs to close the gap. Is data going to be the end all answer? Probably not, but it’s certainly not going to hurt him. This stuff may also provide a confidence boost for him mentally when the race comes....he’s done this testing in the lab but wanted to do it on the actual course. Sure....it can all go down the tubes if he becomes undisciplined on race day. But the better he knows his body, the better he can tweak his strategy...pretty smart I’d say. The guy is human....relatable. He’s made boneheaded mistakes....it’s frustrating....but man I can’t help but root for him.

How relevant are the dat points for segments that don’t actually represent his physiological state following the swim? Likewise, he will run in a different physiological state following the bike and if this isn’t factored into his data points during the run testing, are they valid indicators of future performance?

How do you determine your ability to take on stress and still perform at your fullest? I had just got back into tri this last year after a 10 year break. I noticed I'm not so anxious to jump into a bunch of races like I use to. Of course it's not my job where I need to bring home some bacon through prize money. But, it seems that there is some consensus that an individual only has a couple strong races in them a year. When are you recovering from the season? It appears you have a strong work ethic but could you be working too hard - too soon - too much?

At some point, perhaps after a few more thousands of video filming hours, Talbot Cox may learn how to focus properly. For example to not rely on auto focus all the time, as when he - as often happens - misses a focus point it keeps the background tack sharp and the main subject(s) all out of focus despite them being at a fixed, predictable distance from his camera. Nah.

@@TalbotCoxMedia Kick it out of auto focus. No reason to use auto focus when your subject is not moving, distance-wise from the camera. This is just my personal feedback. You create a lot of content. A lot of good content. The thing that consistently bogs down the quality of the videos - and the viewer doesn't care what equipment you use so long as it looks (and sounds) good - is lack of main subject focus. Just my ten cents.

Every world tour rider goes through this sort of testing.... A LOT. its a thing, its real, gives real data for real program planning to give you the “marginal gain” ( as they call it) over the guys beating you on the last km or the last hour of racing. All the guys winning have this data and have a training plan based on it....If you guys dont get that then thats fine, but dont armchair-expert comment saying its bulshit, because it most def is not. World tour teams are not in the business of wasting money on thing that dont give the results, they spend a lot fo their budget on this data for a reason.

The problem with Lionel is that every year he swings the pendulum in the polar opposite direction from the year before. How many times has he gone from self-coached to “I need a team of people around me!”.... Every time he drags other people onto his team, he either gets injured or turns up flat in Kona. The dude just needs to RACE rather than obsess over all this nonsense....

He raced his first Ironman in 2020. And is this really the first time he does these kind of tests to prepare himself for the upcoming season? Really? Every professional athlete who takes his training seriously does this at least once every year. Lionel has talent. No doubt about that. But his attitude doesn’t match up. And his ego prevents him from winning Kona. And with the new incredibly fast new athletes moving up from the 70.3 circuit, it will become really hard for him to ever stand on the top podium spot in Kona.
