Disruption by Design: The Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent Signature Guitar

Музыка

Annie Clark discusses the importance of disassociating from her St. Vincent stage persona in her creative process, writing her latest MASSEDUCTION album, preparing for her FEAR THE FUTURE tour, and designing the newest iterations of her Ernie Ball Music Man signature guitar.
The St. Vincent signature guitar features a lightweight African mahogany body, premium roasted maple neck with rosewood, ebony or maple fretboard. The roasted maple neck is highly figured and is adorned with St. Vincent signature custom inlays. Specially configured electronics package includes your choice of either three Dimarzio mini-humbuckers or the all-new custom-designed Ernie Ball Music Man dual humbucking pickups. Both feature a 5-way pickup selector for a unique offering of tonal options. New for 2018 colors include Charcoal Sparkle, Blue Dawn, Stealth Black, and Sea Breeze.

The only other artist I've heard talking so enthusiastically about music itself was Björk. In two different ways, these women want to work as hard as they can to create something unique and expand it

I love that St. Vincent, a relatively poppy and underground-for-being-famous artist, has created a guitar that is so beloved to people of all genders and genres. Badass.

It's exhilarating to hear her articulate what I've always had to infer from hints about her process and her self. I think it's the rare artist that also has a deep intelligence they can deploy to create their 'product'. She makes me think of 'engineer as pop star'.

This signature model has grown on me. I like the Strat, Tele, LP's but this is a design i would own. I really pushed it away when i first saw it. Funny how that is. Music Man has got style and original stuff. Nice.

Nicolás Bascuñán - good USA company, but if nobody has heard of BC Rich in a while since they sold a ton of cheap Eighties imports, yeah that would be BS Rich's fault. I think the main point is these SV guitars are a functional and ergonomic improvement that still makes sense in terms of design. EB MM Has taken lots of innovative chances (Albert Lee, Armada) but I believe this model will stick. It's like the good points of Les Paul and Strat and Explorer-Firebird, at least that's how it feels right off the bat.

  • @ShanghaiRooster

@sfairraid 13 Not quite. After forming his first band, The Konrads, in 1962, David had a string of singles releases under various group names (Davie Jones with the King Bees, The Mannish Boys, and Davy Jones/David Bowie with the Lower Third) between 1964 and his first solo releases, beginning in 1966. In addition to those, he was also in two other bands after the Lower Third, namely The Buzz (who played on his first 'solo' single) and the Riot Squad, which last made some recordings but were unreleased at the time. It was whilst with the latter band during 1966 that Bowie was given a white label copy of the first Velvet Underground album by his manager, Ken Pitt, who had been presented with it by Andy Warhol. Bowie was so taken with the album that he insisted the Riot Squad played 'Waiting For The Man' at their final concert (they also recorded the song). So it was that Bowie was the first person to cover a VU song, and before their album had even had its official release in 1967.

I've heard from people it's a little neck heavy and apparently they're no longer doing the rosewood neck? Honestly I love the way it looks. If I could get one with the original rosewood neck and a slightly larger body that balances the neck better I think it would be a must buy for me. I get that she wanted the smaller body because she felt like it was easier to handle, but I'm a pretty big dude and I'd rather have a balanced neck/body. I think the St. Vincent is actually the most innovative guitar design all around in a long time.

  • @jsphillip60

Davis Phillips I'm not sure how to deal with a neck heavy guitar. Add some kind of counter weight near the bridge, or some strap adjustments? I had that problem with an SG I once owned, but I loved that guitar so much I got used to it somehow.

  • @dougross2150

    @dougross2150

I am a bigger guy as well, and have the original with the Rosewood neck, I don't know where this 'neck heavy' idea comes from. The body is smaller (Yes) and light (Yay!!) but is very well balanced from my experience, both standing and sitting. The playability and tone are great. Honestly I was not a fan of the shape but once I tried it (three times to be absolutely sure, not a cheap guitar) I bought it. Four months later, no regrets at all. Like most good guitars you get to appreciate them more as you get to play them at home.

The idea was aimed at the style of the vintage Teisco and other futuristic guitars from the 60's & 70's and to me is quite refreshing and very innovative from the ground up. I love the pickup options of 1, 2, 3, all 3 in parallel and then Bridge and Neck together going from position 1-5 on the selector instead of Strat style of the first model. I opted for the baked maple and hope I made the right choice, although much more common than the rosewood, which I also love if only for uniqueness alone. I didn't know how it would hold up in the long run. I may get a rosewood neck version when the price drops a little. I saw Jack White play his the other night at his show. I have to admit, she is a better player overall. They're both great, but Jack kinda throws things at the wall to see if it'll stick and she's very meticulous, so different artists altogether.

You guys have great guitars but they're in the range of Gibson....why so damn expensive? California Taxes? P.S. I LOVE my Sterling, that thing is a beast. Dropped it twice, still plays beatifully.

I find her analysis about ego involvement in music to be so spot on and her self examinations about who she is and what she creates to be so illuminating beyond herself that I'm just completely taken in by her and her creations. St. Vincent/Annie Clark and Jen Psaki are, to me, at the forefront of a new level of womanhood. God I wish I were a younger man.

Love the look of these guitars. And apparently they are awesome to play. Music man are perhaps the most interesting guitar brand. Along with reverend. They do their own thing And affordable for amazing quality. They are shitting all over any innovation by fender and Gibson is now irrelevant as as innovator. They are struggling just to make good les Pauls.

Right Fuckinh - Guitar Moves is a fairly short format but I felt like she showed some of her Jazz and Classical background. I do agree that she comes off as pretentious in a lot of her interviews. A little ego is necessary to push your vision though.

I watched the making of the guitar video and this one - and now I know: she's HOT, she talks weird, she makes strange music. I couldn't tell though if she can play guitar.
