Displaying web-based maps with MAPC2MAPC: OsmAnd Maps & Navigation

OsmAnd can display raster maps downloaded from the web. This video demonstrates some of the advantages and gives a walk-through of the steps involved.
Update: To import a SQLite map file into OsmAnd, download the file to a folder on your Android device, click on the file, and when prompted, open in it OsmAnd. The process is similar for iOS.

This is great. As a programmer, I was able to follow it all. Install of GDAL might be a challenging step for some. Thanks so much!

Glad you liked. And yes, GDAL installation could be challenging. (But not as challenging as using GDAL directly.)

Thanks so much! This one especially is pretty technical and I wasn't sure how many people would delve into the details. So I'm glad to hear you liked it.

Fantastic recipe! I just want to draw your attention to QGIS, which lets you do the registration step even more seamlessly, but leaves you to do the sqlite tiling yourself. It's also free, and multi platform, which is useful for non Windows users.

Thank you! I'm aware of QGIS, but I could never figure out how to make it work for this purpose. Once you georeference the map image, how do you export it in sqlite format?

@@barteisenberg Ah, right, forgot about that step... I don't know if it's possible to do with QGIS. I imported the GDAL-generated tiles into MOBAC and used it to create the sqlitedb atlas. Not trivial, I must admit.

I think John Thorn has done a remarkable job with MAPC2MAPC and is charging a reasonable fee for its use. That said, if QDOS represented a one-stop open source method for converting raster maps to sqlite format, I'd be interested in documenting it.

@@barteisenberg I'd love to use MAPC2MAPC, it's just that I don't have Windows. QGIS and several of the OSM tools are multi platform, so I end up using those.

Thank you for posting this. I was able to get this application working under wine on ubuntu. I hope the author will consider building a snap for this in the future. Running this is in wine is not pretty, but it is preferable to the spyware that is windows10. It seems that USGS has several different ways to download imaging maps. Have you created any maps from those files? Offline satalite imaging would be amazing.

I'm glad you liked. The video about half-way through shows me georeferencing a USGS topo map, albeit an old one, using the coordinates listed on the map itself. Have you seen this USGS site: ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/ ? I haven't tried this, but I wonder if one could download a map in one of the listed formats and use MAPC2MAPC to convert for OsmAnd. Also (and I haven't tried this either), in 2019, blogger Akkana Peck posted instructions for converting raster maps for OsmAnd in a Linux environment using (I think) only open source software: shallowsky.com/blog/mapping/osmand-making-overlay-maps.html

Hi Bart, can you confirm, that it is still working on latest OSMAnd? I'm struggling to implement your steps, but no luck... :/ Already checked result file of mapc2mapc in Locus and it is working fine.

I think I'm seeing what you're seeing. I generated a sqlite file, but I can't see it on OsmAnd either as an underlay or overlay layer. Is that your experience, as well?

Now I've got it, at least in theory. I regenerated the sqlite file just using one zoom level--13. And zoomed in on the area. I also disables/enabled the plugin "Online maps", though I'm not sure that did anything. Further research probably needed.

Ha! That's interesting... I tried your solution. Although it is only one zoom level, it displays my generated map. What do you reckon - is it a bug of this version of Osmand? Discussion on github was started about that by me: github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/discussions/11735 but no one shared my experiences. I could post a message there for others of what was discovered by you.
