Display Base - Concrete Airfield

Ғылым және технология

Today we're going to build a display base for a scale model. It's going to look like an airfield made of concrete slabs.
We'll use mostly wood and plaster.

    Wow, that came out really nice. I realize that this video is 5 years old, but I have an idea that would keep the wooden board from warping due to humidity from the plaster. Placing a large piece of plastic wrap into the frame before pouring the plaster will definitely keep any moisture away from all wood surfaces.

  • @Big-Modeller

    @Big-Modeller

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well, those holes give the "concrete" a nice look, but you're right they shouldn't be that prominent in smaller scales. One way is to shake the liquid plaster thoroughly or to use drywall.

  • @dxzxax8772

    Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for! Only I want to make a sidewalk/curb to fingerboard on and grind. I was gonna use real concrete (knowing nothing about it), but plaster looks way smoother and perhaps easier to work with. Do you think plaster would make an abrasive grinding sound on the edges when playing with a fingerboard like a real skateboard grinding concrete? Thanks!

  • @Big-Modeller

    @Big-Modeller

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate :) Now that I googled what a fingerboard is I have bad news. This painted plaster is very fragile. I mean VERY. You can mess it up just by staring at it intensive enough ;). Better find a more sturdy material for your track.

    @@Big-Modeller Ha thanks. I knew it was an 'out-there' kind of question. Maybe I will use real cement or concrete. Your work looks so good. You gave me great ideas for carving out slab cracks and tips for painting. It's the exact look I'm going for. I'm just gonna try it with a sturdier material. Keep up the great work.

    To be honest, I didn't intend to take the plaster out of the frame. It was supposed to stay there, but the wood got humidity from the plaster (the wood solution was not enough to protect it), and got bended. So I had to replace the bottom board with the new one - side battens were ok.

    czy wyliczasz wielkość płyty w zależności od skali? Ja robiłem podobny display to długo się męczyłem, by zachować skalę! Poszedłem trochę na łatwiznę i zamiast wylewek zastosowalem płytę kartonowo-gipsową, którą "obrałem" z kartonu i pomalowałem na szary beton - to też fajna metoda:)

    Pamiętam, że przy robieniu tej podstawki szukałem informacji na temat wymiarów płyt lotniskowych i przeliczyłem to na skalę 1/72. Nie wiem nad czym się tak męczyłeś, podzielenie wymiaru przez 72 nie jest takie trudne ;) A co do myku z płytą kartonowo-gipsową... to też bym tak zrobił jakbym jakąś miał ;) Wylewka zniszczyła mi drewnianą ramkę (wykoślawiła się od wilgoci), także dobrze że zrobiłeś to sprytniej :).

    Spokojnie, przecież podstawka jest już zrobiona w całości :) Trochę to trwało ale po kilku dniach wszystko ładnie wyschło. Wbrew pozorom z gipsem nie było problemów, za to drewno dało mi popalić. Rozwiązaniem problemu jest albo zrobić formę z czegoś innego niż drewno i po wyschnięciu przełożyć odlew do ramki, albo wycinać gotowy fragment płyty kartonowo gipsowej - i do tej drugiej opcji się skłaniam na przyszłość.

    Hej. Co daje ten pre-shading?

  • @Big-Modeller

    @Big-Modeller

    6 жыл бұрын

    Cześć :) Pre shading daje ciemniejszy odcień blisko krawędzi płyty, środek jest jaśniejszy i dzięki temu całość wygląda naturalniej. Ta technika jest często stosowana w modelarstwie.

    Very cool way of doing this, is it is any normal plaster or a specific kind? I have a lot of jets this would work for! Nice one!

    Where do you see a glossy concrete? I've put a gloss varnish on it only to make an oil wash on it. Watch again 10:32 of the film, I show there that the concrete is made matt again. I advise to watch the whole movie next time before you write a comment. PS. What's wrong with a glossy concrete anyway? It is glossy when it's wet, I could do it this way to make a rainy diorama if I wanted to.

But here is a link to a website that shows it on an image with some infromation - www.airwaysmuseum.com/Signal%20Square.htm

    Thanks :) As for this circle... It was a calibration sign for Su-22's (Su-17) gyroscopic navigational system. Optical instrument on the airplane had to be centered on this circle for 15-30 minutes before take off (depends on the mission's demanded accuracy).
