Once upon a time, the area where Disneyland stands today was a vast orange grove, ten acres of which were owned by the Dominguez family. This land was purchased by Walt Disney himself in 1954 for his ambitious theme park project. However, the sale came with one special condition: Walt Disney had to preserve the Canary Island Date Palm that Ron Dominguez's grandparents had received as a wedding gift in 1896. This cherished tree still stands today, prominently located across from the Jungle Cruise ride in Adventureland.
Ron Dominguez, who had grown up on the property, moved out with his family in August of 1954, just 11 months before Disneyland's grand opening. When the park opened, 20-year-old Dominguez took a summer job at the ticket booth. His dedication and hard work quickly propelled him through the ranks to become an attraction supervisor. By 1990, he was named the company’s executive vice president, and after his retirement, he was honored with the prestigious title of Disney Legend. Ron Dominguez’s story is a testament to the deep roots and lasting legacy the Dominguez family has within the magic of Disneyland.
