    Not a character break but keeping character so well. When I went for a choir trip in high school, I ended up separated from my friends towards the end of the night. I'm a diabetic, and I could feel my blood sugar dropping, and I had no snacks left on me. Well, while making my way to the castle where we were meeting, I felt myself getting really dizzy from it. I walked up to a concession stand and explained my blood sugar was tanking and asked if I could buy even a thimble of soda. They apologized and said they had already closed the till out. I worked at a local theme park back home, so I knew they couldn't do anything about that. I thanked them anyway and sat down nearby. I was preparing to send an SOS to my choir director when the person I talked to came out with the largest size of Coke she had and a pretzel for me. "Thank you so much! How much do I owe you?" (My brain was fuzzy, so I forgot she already told me the stand's register was closed) "Oh, don't worry, Mickey bought it for you! He hopes you feel better soon. " And if you've ever experienced a blood sugar crash, you know it can make you a mess of a human mentally. I burst into tears and thanked her profusely. I'm pretty sure I thanked Mickey, too 😅 I caught up with everyone once I felt okay, and the rest of the trip was amazing! Weirdly enough, that was one of the more magical experiences I had there. Probably the near-death experience lol

    Story 13 makes me question about characters who are known for being physical and fighting back attackers in their movies (Tarzan, Gaston, Baloo being the most common ones I've seen in the parks). If these teens attacked a Tarzan, and they get pinned, would the actor get in trouble? Tarzan wouldn't be breaking character, because he's always fighting back. Personally, if I saw a character like Gaston curl up into a ball because some teens are beating on him, instead of sucker punching the punks in the face, I'd say that broke character completely. So, does Disney only care when the "gentle" characters defend themselves or is it a strict "Don't touch guests beyond a hug" policy? I know that most characters have security and handlers, but these stories tell me that some of these characters are left alone on occasion.

  • @asroczka

    @asroczka

    Yeah if I saw Gaston or Tarzan cowering whist getting punched, I think of that as a complete character break. Gaston is supposed to be the strong but stupid villain and Tarzan was raised by apes. They’d sucker punch them for sure.

    The story of the person's Mum playing Piglet and being beaten by some assholes actually sticks out to me because of a story my own Mum told me. Back in 1989, well before I was born, my Mum worked as a mascot performer for an indoor theme park. She played a purple dragon character. Apparently some scumbags think it's cool to show off their strength by beating up people in mascot costumes, knowing they can't do anything to retaliate. One bloke thought it would be fun to twist the dragon's arm, but my Mum understandably let out a scream of pain. The guy quickly backed off upon realising it was a woman in the costume. This is why we can't have nice things. Mascot characters are literally there to make people happy. They don't deserve that kind of treatment. Not then, and not now.

    I’ve been a mascot character and a face character (but not for Disney). Mascot characters have it especially hard because those costumes are heavy and have limited visibility and muffle your hearing. People think it is fun to attack mascots, throw stuff at them, hit/kick them…sadly I’ve even had creepy people (men and women) make indecent offers to me when they find out I am a woman inside of the costume. The tell me to meet them later and wear the costume or just wear the head. 💀 As a face character, some park patrons would pinch or slap my rear end to get my reaction in their photos. Other times they would put their arm around my waist or their hand on the small of my back as if we were dating and I would politely but firmly tell them to stop doing that. A few times some unruly or drunk park guests who sneaked in liquor would try to kiss me for a photo in the same way of the post WW2 sailor and nurse. I would have them removed from the park for that. Sorry for the long reply, my point is your mom has my sympathy.

I went and asked for a picture and I got a hug, I sunk right into the costume, it was like all encompassing, the side kind of caved in a bit. The picture is just Eeyore with two skinny little legs wearing neon green shorts coming out the side of his torso. Best Disney hug ever.

    yeah I was a Cast Member for several years in the park. Was a backstage CM but many of these stories are true. I cannot tell you how many young women ages 18-22 would come back stage, take off their male character heads and have black eyes, missing teeth, fat lips etc. from not just teenagers but ADULT MEN wailing on them. The worst was a Snow White who was group beaten by an entire family on her way walking backstage to end her shift. She even had done several photos already with the family, beyond her clock time, but they wanted "more time" with her and they actually waited for her at the exit and jumped her. She was out of work for about a week to heal. We also had a lot of instances of child and spouse abuse that happened among the guests, we would monitor the situation on the video cameras and do whatever we could subtly do to make the victims of the abuse have a better time. If it got really bad we would report the behavior to the police and give them the footage. Also a lot of people come sick to the parks, like chicken pox, the flu, RING WORMS etc. We also monitor these people and keep interactions with everyone to a minimum, but then there would also be people who would bring their hours old babies to the parks and that would flip all our minds. One time we had to do back-flips worth of work backstage to keep a family with a 3hr old baby away from another family we knew had a severe case of mumps from each other, at one point they were only 20ft away from one another. Also PLEASE! Never come to the parks on an actual holiday. None of us want to be there, we want to be home with our families just as much as you do, so most people take the time off (management of course gets those days off anyway) and those that can't officially take the day off, call out sick. So the park has ZERO management, and about only 16% of under staff actually running the park. Then you add in that this is when the parks are overrun with people and it's bad news days for everyone involved. One Christmas we almost locked a little boy and his sister into a storage unit after the parade was over. Apparently he and her had climbed into the float as it passed by. On any other day other than a major holiday, this would have been impossible to do. Too many CMs, cameras, etc. we would have caught them before any damage was done, but considering it was Christmas night, there was literally only 12 people running the entire parade and only 8 Actors. So, we ran the parade best we could, then were in the process of locking up the floats for the night when we heard small cries like a little animal. We turned all the lights back on a saw him hanging for dear life on the ladder used by the Actors to get to the higher levels so they can do areal tricks during the parade. We took him down and he confessed his sister was following him, we found her curled up in a compartment used for storing bouncy beach balls that look like giant flowers. It took us another 6hrs to track down the kids' family. They were all drunk and had apparently left the 2 kids along with all their cousins with 1 Aunt, who had no idea the kids had gone missing. Again, it probably wouldn't have taken us this long to track a family down, but there was no security and not enough on foot CMs to track the family. Many of us stayed well past overtime to make sure the kids were taken care of. They did gets lots of Mickey stuffies and candy.

Like, sure, the shorter character are women because they're shorter, but the fact that OPs mom _defended herself_ and got _in trouble for that_ is _pathetic!_ She should've _never_ gotten into _trouble_ for that! Hell, she should've been _praised!_ Being assaulted regardless of if you're a female, male, or whatever the hell you identify as - what you identify as don't matter here, point is, regardless of gender identification, _defending yourself_ should be the _only exception_ to breaking character. Unless you're dressed as Mulan, Merida, or any other kickass Disney Princess, then you could just do it all whilst in character and avoid trouble, but that wasn't the case here. Would've been hilarious and awesome to hear a story like that, tho.

    I'm currently working as a character actor, a non-speaking one at that. Not quite Disney, but the same headspace. There are times where I do break character slightly in secret ways for kiddos that are hoping for a special moment, special needs friends meeting a new cool friend, and yeah there are also times where I break character because teenagers think that it's fun to beat up on basically a cartoon character. It's always a little funny when they realize that there's a chick in the suit. I will have to say it's the one of the more genuine jobs out there, especially when you get to see the kids light up at a character that they like. It's like you made their dreams come true, and hey I get to be a cartoon character and not talk for 30 minutes lol

    I managed to unintentionally make a staff member break character (not a character costume, but it was themed around the ride). It was on the Tower of Terror, the actor was dressed as one of those old timey lift operators and was really playing up the spookiness. Guess who just realised he had a previously undiscovered extreme fear of falling? I burst in to tears so badly that the act was instantly dropped and he came over extremely concerned and asked if I was alright. Me and my family then got escorted out cause it was clear I couldn't handle it. Hope the dude didn't get in trouble for that, having someone recognise I was scared and offer to let us off the ride really helped.

Her first guest was a little girl. When she asked where the little girl was from she replied "Im from new york city". Its was 9:30 am and they had no idea. Nikki said she tryed to smile and to tell her to go tell her mom to call home as Ariel, but when the girl got confused, Nikki said she broke character and just came out and said "Go tell your mom she needs to call home right now". Not for Disney, but I was a costumed character, both face and mascot, for sports teams, product promotion, conventions/events, parties, and theme parks. As a mascot character, I’ve had stuff thrown at me or been physically attacked by guests. Some of them realized I’m a woman in the costume and made perverted offers, telling me to wear the costume or just the head of the costume for them later in the bedroom. As a face character, they would attempt to pinch or slap my buns to catch my reaction/expression on camera. Other times they would put their arm around my waist or hip, or place their hand on the small of my back as if we were dating. A few of them tried to hug me from behind, place their arms around my waist, shoulders, or hips. I would shut that down immediately, and tell them firmly but politely not to do that. The drunken guests, especially at this one Six Flags park, who sneaked in liquor were the worst. They would try to kiss me for the photos, often in the manner of the sailor and the nurse from the post WW2 photo scene. A group of drunk college girls encouraged their friend to do this to me, and I had them and other drunk guests who behaved this way ejected from the park by security.

    I love the security guard story and the Nick story the best. So sweet, and so much deserved. My Dad was in a bunch of plays when I was young. I remember when he was a bagpiper for Brigadoon. He'd also been Mr. Snow in Carousel, with my older siblings being some of his kids. But the most memorable story he has told me about being in plays was when he was in A Christmas Carol and they were doing it as a theatre in the round. Which means that the audience surrounded the stage. Dad played the last two of the ghosts of Christmas. Well, between the ghosts of Christmas present and the ghost of Christmas yet to come, there was an intermission, and the audience was told to be back in their seats promptly afterwards. One lady was late. Picture a dark stage. A tall cloaked figure stands there. But, because the lights are down, he blends in with the darkness. This lady is rushing to get back to her seat and cuts across the stage to do so. She bumps into Dad and lets out a blood curdling scream. Dad says it was all he could do to not break character and burst out laughing. 😂

    Not really a character break, but still pretty special. So last year during my visit to Disneyland with (initially) my mom for my birthday-- we had to go a few days before since we were going to Vegas for my birthday weekend-- I decided to park hop to DCA and go to Avengers Campus. When I was starting to get thirsty, I approached the Shawarma Palace food cart so that I could buy myself some water. Nothing else, just water. But when it came time to pay, the card machine that was used to receive payment wasn't working, so the Cast Member decided to try and restart it. However, when it became clear that it was taking much longer and since there was a line behind me, she leaned in and whispered to me that she'll give me the water bottle since it would be paid for. Then she announced to everyone else in line that the food cart was closed for the time being, allowing me to accept the water bottle. This story was something that I haven't shared anywhere on social media since I didn't want to get the CM in trouble or inspire any copycats looking to recreate this on purpose. But regardless, it was still pretty special.

    Not a costume, but my mom and my aunt (my mom’s sister) went to Disney land for the first time together. As soon as they enter the park they see an employee yelling at people. “YOU NEED TO PARK YOUR STROLLERS RIGHT HERE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!” People were just laying their baby strollers outside the entrance, like people leaving karts out in the parking lot, and she wasn’t having it. The employee picks up a stroller and throws it across the road, almost hitting several people. As people stand and watch in horror, she kept on throwing and flipping things over. They had to get security to come and restrain the employee and take her away. My aunt turns to my mom and goes, “I thought you said Disney was the happiest place in the world” 😂

    Not a Disneyland thing, but just a funny story in general. I was with my friends at a golfing range and there was a heart foundation there, lots of Star Wars characters like darthvader and stormtroopers. We’re busy putting in the driving range, making bets on how far we could hit the ball and rewarding the other with flicks on the ear. As I was the only girl in my trio of other two boys, I was getting my flicks when the friend who was on, turned around and pointed behind us. We both turned around to Darth Vader staring my friend in the face before giving him a scolding. He was trying to play it cool while I was laughing my head off on the seat. I don’t watch Star Wars but I can’t imagine that happening in any time line

    I don't know if this was a character break or not, but I remember two instances involving Stitch in general. I went to Disney World when I was twelve, and Stitch was my favorite character ever. I went on the Stitch ride multiple times and got a stuffed animal that was 2/3's my height at the time. I remember sitting outside of the ride after getting him with the giant stuffed animal in my lap as I hugged him, waiting for my bio-dad to finish his smoke break. I looked up and saw the Stitch character actor walking towards the side building's door (as an adult, I realize they were either going for a break or clocking out). I was sitting there frozen and freaking out internally, and the character actor happened to look in my direction, and from across the plaza, they stopped and pointed directly at me and waved excitedly. I managed to wave back in my freakout, and the moment they left the area (I didn't want to embarrass myself) I sprinted to my bio-dad along with my brother to tell him all about it. The second was one of those workers who stand at a ride entrance, and as we passed by he said, "Ohana mean's family." in a Stitch voice as I lugged the massive stuffed animal around. I remember looking back and seeing him smiling.
