    here's my theory. the ship will do a singapore to hongkong route with stop at bangkok- saigon and hanoi. you get a huge lucrative south east Asia market that want to cruise with Disney but don't want to travel half way around the world. the price of the park entrance is included in the ticket. you can also add stop to tokyo, busan, taipie, manila, and Jakarta. the are room big enough that you can theoretically turn the ship into a floating Disney hotel.

    Having just sailed on the Wish, I don't know that this ship is appealing to me. But it is mentioned that it's not for the American market so there you go. I wish Disney could bring their originality to a larger ship and make a ship that is fun for adults and kids alike that has no casinos (Disney doesn't need that) but has fun adult only areas that have more than just bars and trivia. Having toured the kids clubs on the Wish there are so many things they could adapt for adults that would be amazing. Many adults who travel on the Disney ships are just kids at heart.

    Agreed with Dom that this ship is bound for Asia. From the looks of it, there seems to be a central promenade not unlike the Oasis class ships of RCCL. Wonder of the Seas was designed for the Asian market. As it collapsed from covid they made last minute changes to be able to send it to the US and Europe. If things improve (still not, I think Spectrum just set sail again) it may go back to Asia or Utopia of the Seas may take the spot once delivered. Neither would be until 2024 at the earliest. That would still be ahead of Disney though which is crazy when comparing how far along each vessel is.

    If it's calling Hong Kong home, it will be massive news as it's originally owned by an HK company and the ship is calling Hong Kong home. And a new terminal might be built next to the resort, maybe at the second phase area (If the government is happy to) and a park like DisneySea might be next to it. This way, the pier can join the parks, a place to park it, and the way to secure income if any other cruise ships owned by Disney uses that port.

Great idea that could eventually include a multi week cruise that hits Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo with many stops in between. It might have also been a goodwill deal between Resorts World Intl (which is linked to Genting HK) to release some IPs for the Genting Malaysia theme park (remember, there were some disputes there once Disney bought over 20th Century). It would be interesting to see this ship actually have itineraries from Japan down that line to Sth Korea, to HK, to maybe even the Philippines then doing a tour of SEA (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia etc) then heading back up to Japan. Could be done chasing good weather (avoiding monsoon seasons closer to the equator and winter seasons further up north). I know for sure that if it ever came to SEA, it would be fully booked.

    Shanghai Disneyland is inland, while both Tokyo and Hong Kong are built on reclaimed land with first-row ocean access. It will be a very fierce battle between the two to homeport the "Asia Disney Ship". I think we will win because: first, we can attract more Chinese tourists than Tokyo. Secondly, we are closer to emerging markets like Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. And thirdly, we are more Anglicized than Tokyo, so it's more comfortable for guests from outside of Asia, like Australia NZ etc. Besides, the ship was designed for Hong Kong to begin with.

    Here is where I'm at. I recalled in a Twitter post that when Disney announced that they will purchase the Global Dream, I responded with optimism and some scepticism. By buying off a ship that is almost completed, stick it with some Mickey Mouse branding, and send it to a new market like Asia, this may actually be a genius move to expand their footprint, given that they have resorts in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. A combined Disneyland / Disney Cruise experience is something that will get tourists flocking to them because they want a complete Disney holiday, which is already being done with Walt Disney World. However, it doesn't take a genius or a fanatic to see that this might not work at all. First, the rendering tells me that they are trying to retain the look as all the other ships in their fleet. However, the Global Dream was a completely different design, so it is always going to look hideous. (Six funnels, really?) Second, at 208,000 tonnes, it is easily one of the biggest cruise ships in the world and even bigger than any ship Disney built, which is why it probably makes sense to send this ship to Asia because it is far and away the biggest market for the company. Perhaps what might be really concerning is the direction Disney is currently taking at this point in time. I mean, come on, why can't they do something different like a _Tron_-themed roller-coaster or a multi-slide AquaRacer or bring back the adults-only district instead of removing a roller-coaster, add super luxurious suites, and adding too much IP than maintaining the overall concept design of the past ships? Yes, in the space of four years, Disney will double the size of its ships and yet half of them aren't as grand as you may think. Personally, I would rather take the _Wonder_ over that ship because it makes sense for the Australian / South Pacific market, plus we're getting a real Disney experience that for so long we waited for decades, but didn't come. What matters is that it's the experience that counts, and right now, the Parks & Resorts are a mess. Poor maintenance, confusing reservations, and attractions that are not interesting. And they are paying more to visit Disney parks, so is this any good? This disconnect with its fans and people is clearly seen in Disneyland, Walt Disney World and even the cruise line. And it's not limited to that: the Studio business is semi-floundering (Star Wars fans not happy, _Strange World_ already bombed?), the streaming business is expensive and lacking quality, the political interference and wokeness is getting a bit out of hand, and worse, cast members are getting laid off just as this was announced. No wonder why it's stock is taking a beating, but then again, the world is almost to hitting another recession. But that doesn't mean they can't improve what they already have. And yet they're not doing as much to bring more guests and have a good time after this change of leadership. So yes, I like the way Disney is trying to pull a Cinderella move by purchasing the Global Dream and add it to it's cruise line. If it works, then this is one of their most genius decisions that will cement themselves as the world's leading entertainment giant as it recovers from the COVID pandemic. But it's the experience that counts and so far, Disney is struggling to satisfy its fanbase and guests with its sub-par offerings and rising prices. It doesn't help that its rivals are taking guests away with new theme parks and experiences that people will go to that new, exciting and different (and that is exactly what is happening with Universal Studios and its soon-to-be-open Epic Universe). In other words, with so many fans out of touch with this brand even as they announced the acquisition of the Global Dream, has Disney really lost it's magic? And if they do, are they willing to change its creative and business direction before it's too late? I hope they understand, but I beg to differ...

    I'm not surprised Disney brought this ship as that was the scuttlebut for a while. A cheap ship with up to double of the capacity of the triton for potentially a cheaper or similar price as an extra triton. However with most cruise lines opting for vessels with similar or less passenger capacity currently in the future and disneys astronomical prices compared. Things get iffy. They could also be replacing the older vessels of their fleet with these new ones and either selling their older vessels likely to luxury market or if not possible just getting as much money for scrap as possible.

    If the Meyer Werft is supposed to finish that thing up, that is going to be a logistical nightmare given how big that thing is... Because the Meyer Werft is located up a river which needs to be temporarily blocked up in order to raise the water levels high enough for cruise ships built there to get out to sea in the first place. Getting that half-done ship UP that river, finish it up and then get it back DOWN the river again is going to be a major headache... A spectacle to be sure, but I am not sure the locals are going to be all that happy about it, given how much hassle each ship transfer on that river means for them. And yes, that DOES include deconstruction of a couple bridges if i remember correctly.

    I do know one thing they aren't going to be able to charge their astronomical prices for the Chinese market because they're not going to pay that so it definitely is going to be a challenge to determine pricing but with such a large vessel it shouldn't be that hard. But I'm definitely seeing it in the Asian market I think it would be amazing you have four parks in Asia well three really and I think this would be amazing they just have to carefully tailor the entertainment and offerings towards the Chinese market which I think they can handle well

    Remember, Disney has no desire to accommodate any longer. The CEO himself specifically said they want to make the parks more expensive to eliminate lower income people in order to reduce crowds and make a more exclusive experience. The last thing they'll want is to make things more accessible to people who can't afford to fly to Florida, California, or Paris. Disney Cruises already cost 2-4 times a standard cruise.

    @MattyPants So that’s why I think their cruises are bit-somewhat a waste. If there cruises are 2-4X expensive than a standard cruise. Then what’s the point of spending that much money when there are even better cruises.

  • @mattypants

    @mattypants

    @@shanafrancis9012 depends what you are going for. If you have kids or are a Disney fan, it's unlikely you will find anything better than a Disney Cruise. @Mattypants That’s true since most of the passengers are mainly families. And that kids would want cruises that have lots of activities. And it’s also great for Disney fans because it’s hard to find a Disney themed cruise other than Disney cruise line and other cruise lines may not reach the fans liking so that makes sense.

    Disney should invest getting into Port Aventura close to Barcelona, as management role and make a whole Disney e experience with the cruises and linking through Disney high speed train to the parks in Disneyland resort Paris as they already have highspeed trains stations in front of both resorts,,and maybe universal is taking this option in real consideration

    WHY ON EARTH would Disney purchase PortAventura, when it was built specifically on a site that Disney didn't want ? Also, Universal used to have a partnership with PA, there's a reason they're not going back to it... If they ever come back to Europe, it's probably gonna be in Melun, near Paris, where they are close to Orly Intl airport, would have their own high speed station just like Disney, and much closer to the rest of Europe

    I'm not knocking cruise ships or people who go on them but, as a sailor of a sailing boat, I can't help feeling that the whole cruising industry is becoming 'over the top' with food, luxury, entertainment etc. etc. Also, the size of these vessels, I think, is also a concern not only as far as security but environmental impact of so many turning up all at once in a particular place. I mention security, what would happen if a torpedo or something similar was to be fired at one of these vessels. Its not unthinkable. There are, unfortunately, those who would consider such an act.
