Disney at 100. Has it still got the power to enchant us?

This October marks Disney’s 100th birthday. Since Disney are in the ‘enchantment’ business, we're dedicating a special episode to discussing its cultural impact. Two guests join Belle and Justin.
Yaroslav Sky-Walker is the assistant Priest of Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square In his spare time, Yaroslav reads theology and writes slightly histrionic film reviews… many of which you can find on Seen and Unseen.
Esmé Partridge is a writer and MPhil candidate in the Philosophy of Religion at the University of Cambridge. She also works at the intersection of religion and politics, focusing on religious freedom and interfaith relations.
For Re-Enchanting: www.seenandunseen.com/podcast
There’s more to life than the world we can see. Re-Enchanting is a podcast from Seen & Unseen recorded at Lambeth Palace Library, the home of the Centre for Cultural Witness. Justin Brierley and Belle Tindall engage faith and spirituality with leading figures in science, history, politics, art and education. Can our culture be re-enchanted by the vision of Christianity?

"People who actually believe in something outside of their immediate reality are the people who create enchantment." Great episode! Both guests were incredibly insightful, and the dynamic between the four of them was really good. Now I need to watch the Black Cauldron...

A good discussion. I grew up, much like the panelists, watching Disney movies at friend's houses at a certain age. I grew out of them pretty soon unlike a quite a few people I know who have continued to love the animated movies and songs well into adulthood but even they are getting sick of the newer Disney trends that have been controversial. Probably the biggest argument against their 'modern audiences' adaptations is that they really are ceasing to be profitable and yet they still continue to push these expensive, hollow knockoffs down the conveyor belt!

While it is true that outward beauty does not prove someone is good or evil, the body and soul are united in a much greater way than we like to admit. So inward evil will seep outwards and corrupt the body more than inward good will slowly transform the outward body towards greater beauty. We all have a different starting point for physical beauty, but our soul can adjust that starting point positively or negatively.

Whenever I look forward to your next I episode I find myself hoping that the guest(s) will be someone who I am familiar with. And I have to say I've been delighted every time that hasn't happened ( actually Tom holland was the only one i heard of before) by the interesting guests, topics and discussions that occur. This episode is very much no exception. Love the show, Cheers from Canada!!

Very interesting conversation, and quite balanced. I agree with many of the views expressed. However, there was a time in the late 70’s and early 80’s when Disney almost disappeared. So the transformation of the corporation could partly be explained by the need for survival, I.e. the path to economic success is to pander to the culture.

Yes, not a price that God is willing for us to pay. Look at all the great classical composers of recent years who are strong Christians. Also look at the fact that Narnia and the Lord of the rings arr so popular, being written by Christians.
