Unlike public water supplies that are regularly tested to ensure the water is safe to drink, individuals or families using private water supplies are responsible for testing for contamination. Stay tuned for our video on how to chlorinate the well.

    Great video! This is something we have pondered as Plumbers for years. This has to be the most detailed calculation I've seen that actually makes sense without guessing, or estimating.

    Subscribed! Can you help me determine how much chlorine to regularly add to my cistern to keep that water safe to drink? Would I go with the 0.5 ppm number you gave in the video? Currently, my 1000 gal tank tops off when pumped down to the 500 gal level, I'd like to keep the tank water regularly treated at a low level of ppm. TIA.

    Hey I bought a house and have no idea how deep. We won’t occupy the house for a week or 2. How much bleach do you recomend I put in? The well cap had been off for 4 months and I had the casing and cap repaired/replaced. I’m on a budget and just need to know how much to pour in. I just don’t wana get sick from contaminated water, nor do I want smelly gross water. You can’t use too much bleach can you, as long as I leave the water running for a day or 2??

    Hi Chris, For me it would have been helpful if you did not use the number 100 by choice in more than one spot when demonstrating the formula. It would have helped if you did and additional example and put total gallons at 150 or 60, and the ppm at 50% to help us math dummy’s get it to sink in. I will continue to use your great videos as guides!

    This was great. I am having a low yield issue with my well. I have have very hard water and suspecting there is buildup on the perforations. How much muriatic acid would you use or is there another method?

    This is great for maintenance but it will not be a solution for your problem. I had a problem with my well that it was almost completely clogged with iron and manganese. I fixed that problem with 50 lb pail nuwell 110 acid, 2 gallons of nuwell 310 bio. This was for a 6-inch well that was 150 ft with a static level around 40. So I estimated somewhere around 100 - 150 gallon. It's a two-day process. But it's been spectacular. I plan on doing it again and then trying the chlorine route as maintenance. The new nuwell products are not cheap. But you get what you pay for. The products also contain inhibitors a dye to monitor removal. And the products become neutralized after a period of time.

    How do you use this formula to determine the amount of Well Safe tablets and pellets to use? I plugged in the chlorine percentage and get .2. But .2 of what? The full bottle?

  • @charvakkarpe
    @charvakkarpe3 жыл бұрын

    The math comes out much easier if you understand that parts per million means 1 in 1,000,000. So 100 parts per 1,000,000 is 1 in 10,000. A 100 gallon well needs 0.01 gallons of chlorine. If your solution is 5%, then you need 0.01 gallons / 5% = 0.2 gallons of solution. Really simple, no formula to refer back to. The danger of relying on a formula without really understanding what's happening is that you could make a mistake with it and be way off, not even realize it.

    Currently, I am living in a Home RV. We need electricity so we can make a house. Though, it seems that we need a foundation and well pump done first, i have them both done, yesterday I went to go get my water well checked, and I was told I can shower but no drinking or washing dishes is available. My question is I put bleach into my well using your formula, then I would do a bypass of all the filters in the RV, but I'm about my grey 1 n grey 2 some reason they both fill up at the same time... Would bleach shocking my RV cause the bacteria to disappear or no? (Trying to live in the RV until electrical engineer comes install electrical for my needs to build a house on foundation...) Also how do I find the concentration is it on the back of the product?

  • @bowler383
    @bowler3836 ай бұрын

    Great explanation, however this formula only calculates the gallons of water in the well and ignores the gallons of water being stored in the house, i.e. pressure tank, hot water tank, etc. These need to be part of the disinfection process.

    You're not disinfecting if you bypass the house. The lines in the house are not enough to cause any problems. So what you need to do is get the chlorine thoroughly removed from the well before you start using the bathtub toilet in the house. That will dilute what's remaining in the house to the point where it won't bother anything. Remember to remove the screens in your faucets

    Once you can smell the chlorine in your house at the furthest tap you can then work backwards on all the cold taps until your nearest the main shut off. Let it sit for a few hours to make sure anything in those lines that came from the well gets treated. After the amount of time you need to shock has passed turn the main off and use an outside tap to drain as much water as you can from the system outside the septic system. This will usually back drain any water you have in your taps in higher areas if you open a tap on the top floor. Once it’s drained turn the outside tap off and open the main with that tap on the top floor still open to let air out.

    Bondo I use lake water inlet with a 5 micron and carbon, followed by UV. My most recent test showed 1ppm coliform and 0 E. coli after changing my filters and UV bulb. Do I need to get bleach through my hot water tank too? And if so, would that bleach damage my septic bacteria?

    It will kill the beneficial bacteria that break down waste. Bacteria in your septic tank need to thrive in order for the system to operate correctly.

    My neighbor sold her home the water test failed for bacteria. The plumber shock the well & left quick! The neighbor asked me to come over because of no water pressure. She found out later that the electric well pump motor wires fried the pump! This makes me believe that the chlorine shock shorted the wires causing the pump to fail!!!! This was her second well pump replacement at a cost of $3000 !!!! Sad she already spent $40k for new septic & leach field. I guess we are on borrow time because our well pump is the original 50 years old.

    She probably has an underlying issue with her plumbing or electrical if she has killed multiple pumps in short order. Our pump is the original from 1992
