    ▶ Check out my Disgaea 4 Complete+ review here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dX-AyaWporDKfLg.html ◀ In this review I said "well-done port" when I should have said "well-optimized port", especially considering I was only discussing the technical aspects of the port. While I do not agree with NISA's decision to remove features from the port (something I did not know until it was announced yesterday), I wanted to clear up that I was specifically talking about the technical aspects when I discussed the port in the review.

    The thing about the story is most disgaea games parody the cheesy tropes of jrpgs, anime, and really any trope they can make a good joke out of really. Typically there is good underlying story in disgaea especially once you get around to the final chapters. All the disgaea games I've finished (123&4) have had great stories. But to each his own though.

    I absolutely agree. The parody is amazing and once they slap us all in the face with it they give us a solid story. I will respect anyone's opinion on what is good story telling, but will argue against it. Disgaea series does have amazing stories.

This was a good review and sparked my interest, it only got so much hate because people don't have enough patience to stick around and watch till the end and seem to have all been looking for that point to have been made early on or something.

    That's why its good to figure out the game work's it really don't take that long to figure out the combat style now when you start to figure out the stat's and weapons, some quest and unlocking some of the things in the dark asmbaly, and finding ledendary's incence's are a bit where it starts to get touchy.

Shaming a newcomer to the series with an air of superiority saying you need another 200hours game time to appreciate the game or that you don't understand what makes a JRPG. You triggered some of them as far as to attack you personally targeting your voice. I for one liked the review and got the information that I came for as a fellow newcomer to the series while understanding that people can also have their own opinion about what makes a game good. Noblesse Oblige Looks like you are missing the meaning of RPG. With your reason looks like you are referring to games that have RPG elements which does not require a lot of grinding. These games are not real RPG. Or maybe you said not all require it because you are playing the game easy so playing it easy you will not do a lot of grinding. A pure RPG game RPG simulation, ARPG, JRPG, Turn Base RPG and MMORPG these kinds of RPG requires a lot of grinding. Playing every RPG I like requires grinding. It is up to you how much grinding you want to do. I know what I am talking about. I do not understand why this review is complaining a lot about grinding things you should not complain about because you are playing an RPG. If you do not like this way of playing then go play other genres.

    the voice acting in this game was actually surprisingly good. It was one of the main draws to keep me engaged in the story. I do wish they would just make a Disgaea with a fully serious/ dark story though. it really is the only glaring negative of the whole series. Also, your comment on the "forced grinding" is ridiculous. let me explain why. To start Disgaea is a game all about leveling up your characters. Did you think a game that allows you to level characters all the way to 9999 was going to have little to no grind? Plus not all grind is bad, and that is especially true for the Disgaea series. They literally give you so many options when it comes to grinding. And it's very much like Pokemon where you want to level up your characters to obtain new moves, unlock new versions, etc. And the Item world? You realize that is one of the biggest draws of the game. People spend so so much time in the item world and enjoy it. When you enter the item world its awesome because of the one you can level up your characters a ton, but then you have the added benefit of getting a big power boost which can then be given to any character in your party. Two birds with one stone. And that doesn't even mention capturing the innocence in items which can then be transferred to any other item for stat bonuses. Then, of course, you can also level up the innocence. not to mention on top of all this you can reincarnate characters back to level 1 but they will keep all their abilities and a percentage of their stats from before the reincarnation, so a level 1 character might actually be as powerful as a level 50 character. The point is there are so many systems in Disgaea to have fun with and all of them result in making you stronger. I actually need to go to the cheat shop and artificially make the enemies harder so that I don't steamroll them in the story mode. If you really had your characters so low that the story mode was too hard without purposefully making an effort to grind then you simply took little to no advantage of all the tools the game provides you. Take this analogy as an example. You're playing a jrpg and you learn new spells from vendors in town, Armor and weapons from entering tournaments, and party members from capturing enemies. However, you never take the time to explore or use the tools the game provides and instead only use the basic slash ability to kill the enemies. Well at some point your going to become underpowered and need to grind to become strong enough to kill them with a slash ability. But if you complain about that in a review nobody is going to take you seriously. The game literally gives you so many alternate routes to simply have fun on top of becoming stronger. The point is they are tools. And it's not just that they are begrudgingly necessary if you want to progress in the game because they make you stronger. They add to the games fun factor giving you new things to do as well as make you stronger. anyways I sincerely hope you give the game another shot because you seem to of completely missed many of the aspects that make it so great.

  • @cub

    @cub

    5 жыл бұрын

    You are right in that the game provides several methods to get stronger. I actually ended up powering through the story with an extremely overleveled healer (that could one-shot most enemies) due to the unique evilities granted to that class. It allowed me to get through most of the game without grinding too much. However, I tried to explain in another comment that I was not criticizing the game for having grinding in the first place, but rather that the grinding was forced on the player and felt like it was taking the place of actual game content. Instead of providing new, unique, and fun levels, stories, and other content, the game instead encourages the player to grind to fill that void (something perfectly demonstrated through the inclusion of an endless item world). I much prefer when a game can continuously provide new and interesting experiences without resorting to endless repetition (something that Dragon Quest XI did really well this year). As such, I stopped playing shortly after beating the main storyline. It is definitely more of a personal preference, but bothered me enough to warrant inclusion in the review. As for giving the game another shot, I do want to try playing through the other games in the series to see how they compare. Although I did like this game (a 7/10 is definitely a good score from me), I have heard good things about some of the predecessors (especially story-wise).

    The d-pad only moves the cursor in cardinal directions. You could use that instead of left stick on narrow bridges. Also, if you require grinding to beat the game, it's very likely that your battle tactics aren't perfect. My brother also grinds in disgaea, but i can go through the games without it. It's a matter of character placement, luring tactics, bottlenecking, and using the throw mechanics. I've based this info off of previous disgaea titles, but i'm pretty sure it's the same for D5.

    "grinding " is a bad way to put it, its current set up is better than most games where you stay perfectly sync with enemies and never have to play higher lvl NPC's, this offers the fun "under dog" feel where you play until you have to do some "side battles , item world ect." I think the "bad story " is a parody of how a game that is following 4 other titles can not take it to seriously and focus on the amazing combat and party and skill tree systems. I think coming from playing other games the idea of having to "grind a bit" to win makes that hard fight that mush more epic to win in a way. I understand there is a balance to this trade off, but I think as well its a way this kinda game shows the player that there was a Much better way to complete battles and test new strats/ synergies of the crazy amount of options given. SOme modern RPG's a player only hangs out at a lvl for so sort of time before shooting into some higher teir that the tiers themselves are hollow of the joy of obtaining them.

    @GreyFox235 жыл бұрын

    It's definitely a grindfest but that's the game in general. Actually I think that's most ALL tactical RPGs in general. Even XCOMs requires a level of grinding. Disgaea just has the super grind option if you want to go that deep into. That's true for the characters or combat too. You can beat the game with the bare minimum of knowledge. Now if you want the high rewards, strongest versions of each class and all the legendary variants of things, then yes, it's a steep curve. But you can definitely beat the game just using the most basic approaches in combat. It's why the story is relatively short and new games plus with multiple endings a standard for the series. Also the english is probably the worst part of the series... A lot of the charm and humor comes from the Japanese VAs.

    I cannot imagine how Disgaea looks, feels, and plays to newcomers. Watching DSP play Disgaea 4 & 5 is perhaps the best gauge for a veteran Disgaea player to see newcomers play. A review about a Disgaea game that only talks about the story and bemoans grinding will always miss the potential of the game. The Disgaea series has never taken the story too seriously. It feels like they want the player to know that the story is absurd so as not to get in the way of where the focus should lie. The series focus is on optimization. If a player is into games for nice graphics, a speedy playthrough with a compelling story, and the ability to defeat enemies based on player skill alone without any character requirements, Disgaea is absolutely not for you. Maybe God of War, Fallout 4, or GTA are for you. If a player is into playing games to figure out how to optimize their character, if for no other reason to optimize their character or to take down the optional big bad after fighting 5 big bads beforehand and pumping the final big bad to the max, then Disgaea might be for you. There will definitely be skipping story scenes and grinding if you fall into the latter. Check out Cool Ghosts review for a different perspective on a newcomers experience with the game.

    Finally someone understanding what disgaea is all about. For me, it's the best kind of srpg you can find : beginner friendly but deep to a point you can't imagine if you're new to the series. Now for the story : saying it's bad is completely missing the point. It's all about fun. It never takes itself seriously. It's made to make you laugh and that's what I love about this game. Music : same here, in 5 you clearly recognize themes from earlier disgaea games plus new ones and music alone makes the game memorable. The whole game is a fun package. You want to have a good time, look no further. If you want 'the last of us' kind of scenario, just looking at the art style is enough to know what it's all about, so clearly joke is on you.

    The game made his popularity thanks to the possibility to level up all of your infinite characters to level 9999. You can't say that the actual selling point of this game is a bad thing, this is exactly what players are looking for in a Disgaea game. I can understand that as your first, you might have been disapointed, but come on, this is a subjective point of view.

    Hyon D For me about grinding it is not actually subjective when reviewing game. Because if you reviewed this game and that is the point of game it has a lot of grinding which is not forced then he does not have the right to say that the grinding in any RPG is con. That is the reality of playing RPG grinding is needed whether it is forced or not. He needs to improve the way he review games. If he does not like grinding he better stay away from RPG. Its like saying he does not like Disgaea for that feature.

    "Forced grinding"??? D5 is the easiest of all the games, and requires no grinding at all. I put it up to 20 star difficulty the second it was possible, and still quickly outpaced the content in terms of power. With all the systems in D5, you can literally get away with using only the main character from beginning to end, and finishing it with insane amount of power without grinding once. Capture + Extract = Crazy OP.

    @@cub just a minor nitpick, but there is an easy workaround for the grinding in this game. You know the research squad in the game? Characters working in that gain exp. So all you really need to do is put the lower level characters there for a few levels. When I did that, it didn't take long for research squad characters to out level the ones I was using. This way you only need to focus on leveling a few characters directly, and others level themselves. Doesn't completely remove the grinding, but it does lessen and speed it up somewhat.

    And 10 levels is nothing. What matters is stuff like elementary affinity, good positioning and so on. You can wipe most maps with levels a fraction of that of the enemies. Essentially, you can either puzzle out how to solve the story maps - or grind and win that way. If you don't like grinding, well, don't do it. But you might have to actual stop and think about what you are doing instead then ...

    Not all JRPGs resort to grinding to inflate their playtimes, there have been several released in this year alone that show that you do not need grinding to make a good (and long) JRPG. Dragon Quest XI, Ys VIII, Cyberdimension Neptunia 4, and Memories of Celceta are just a few examples of such that I reviewed this year.

    "Port is really well done". No it isn't, please stop lying. Or do your research before making such statements. For starters, character sprites and text do not scale to higher resolutions well, and it makes everything look terrible, even on 1080p it looks off but ifyou go to 2k and higher it's abysmal. Secondly, they completely removed one of the fan favourite features of disagea: custom maps. You can no longer create custom maps and share them with others, share items with others, send messages etc. There is zero interactivity with others while playing the game which will sucks for a lot of us. Lastly, game's performance is all over the place. Shouldn't be a problem with if you have a good CPU, but those on the lower end can have problems because their CPU will throttle the performance. I will also mention multiple people complaining they can't start the game at all, although I didn't have this issue. The PS4 and Switch versions are SUPERIOR in every way: they have better performance, they have more content, and they actually look better for crying out loud. This is not a good port, this is a disgrace, I am very disappointed this fantastic game was butcher so much, Disgaea deserves better.

But I would think any RPG or JRPG were generally meant for grinding. Or any game with a high level system. Grinding to me is earning your right to become over powered. Which is why I like to play them sure it's the same for some others as well.

    what you talk about here is because you have never played a Disgaea game before, and as i do believe they have a mediocre way for teaching out the mechanics, it is by no means intended for new players to the series, and i would agree that it's the worst story of the 6 main games, the grinding is a key essential part of the game that is shown off since Disgaea 1, i know that you don't get it but those who have played since the first will agree that while tedious is fun to travel and battle through the item world and the outmatched level difficulty also show the point that you are not meant to go enter the item world without a good strategy, sometimes when i played the older ones skipped sometimes by running out trough the gates to reach a room i can exit or call a Mr. Gency's Exit, i agree about the camera but we are already accustomed to it also this wasn't that big of a problem in older Disgaeas and even a pro sometimes

    5:40 ... I take it you never played a Disgaea game before Disgaea 5 if you didn't expect grinding.I mean your talking about a game where the soft level cap is 9,999 and the hard level cap is 195,999 if you include reincarnation levels. 6:43... Eh, I wouldn't use the item world to grind them out, then again I am use to D1 and D2 item worlds where you can easily get stuck from bad RNG on level generation quit often where a enemy is behind a wall that is way to tall to get past or over a gap way to far to throw over. Best way to grind those up is to unlock Cheat mode in the assembaly and then crank up the level of the enemies and go into world 1-1 and just keep one shotting the enemies fairly quickly, I got things like my Fighter from not having one at all to 4 stars out of 5 in a matter of about 10 minutes slaughtering level 14 Prinnies. The game also isn't meant to be played like a regular TRPG, the entire series started as a spoof on the TRPG genre, you are meant to do stupid stuff and get way OP, like I said earlier the level cap is almost 200,000.
