Isn't the traditional way to start reading Discworld to randomly pick up a book in the middle somewhere for a dollar at a library sale and then realize you have gotten yourself sucked in to a 41 book series?

I did not start with it, but it was one of the ones I started with; in no small measure thanks to a super-successful theatre production by Divadlo v Dlouhé in Prague. They had it on for _thirteen years._ Father got tickets as a birthday gift with a magazine subscription one year. Came back highly enthusiastic, and that's saying a lot because father is far from a regular theatre-goer or fiction-reader. So I eventually went to see it as well, and, well... I needed to get the book afterwards, naturally.

Guards Guards is probably the best of those 2 to start. I will caution you against Moving Pictures as, in my opinion, it’s the weakest of the first batch. Since it was written decades ago, its criticisms of Hollywood may come across dated & tiresome to the modern reader. Not the fault of Terry Pratchett. It’s just a lot of the same criticisms that have become common these days.

Great suggestions! Of these, I especially love "Guards, Guards!" As a starting point. But no one gave me that advice when I found Pratchett... I just picked up "Going Postal" because it was on the 'new release' shelf at my public library and looked interesting... and I was hooked forever. Lucky me, that it just happened to be introducing brand new characters, and just happened to be one of Pratchett's absolute best! Shortly after, I checked out "Monstrous Regiment." Same results. They're such great books in their own right, so you get to start by seeing Pratchett at his best. And even though they come late in the overall series, you don't actually have to know any of that backstory to enjoy them. And when we meet old "familiar" Discworld characters making cameos, it's kind of great to get to meet them just as the new characters do, through their first impressions, and not knowing yet who's trustworthy, etc...

Yeah "Weird Sisters" was where Sir Terry came into his stride and the style of the Discworld Series really began. The first three novels, though good, were pretty raw and didn't have Pratchett's iconic style of "Sarcastic Intelligent Satire" down yet. My first exposure was reading Guards Guards, as at primary school I surpassed the reading material offered to me and my sister gave me her copy to read. I got hooked and years later bought my sister's collection from her when she needed some cash for Uni (still have it over 20 years later)

Something I've found with Small Gods is that the people who appreciate it the most are those with a background understanding of religion, often those who have been raised strongly religious and subsequently left that faith or become less hard-line about it I was raised non-religious in that very specifically English "we don't go to church and don't talk about God ever but we still christened you C of E because Tradition" sense - it took until my early teens until I even realised that some people _did_ believe in a religion besides just a sense of tradition and ritual. So Small Gods just......didn't work for me, because it was just completely outside my frame of reference, the same as the first couple of books fall flat for people who don't recognise 80s fantasy. The people who class Small Gods as the best, in my experience, are the ones who actually recognise what Pterry is trying to do with it and have first-hand knowledge of what it is he's satirising

THIS. I just read them in whatever order my local library had them available, plus whatever I could scrounge up in book sales and charity shops. Finding a new one was a real event and I don't think I'd have treasured them as much if I'd just acquired them one after the other in a sensible order. Sure you might encounter one character as a doting father and duke in one book and then jump back in the series to before he became all those things, so you already know that the woman he's just met is going to be his wife. But that never spoiled anything for me: one of the really charming things about Discworld is that the characters just live their lives between books and their relationships progress when you're not watching them. The actual plots tend to be pretty self contained: the central question tends to just be a problem that's dealt with by the end of the book and the relationships happen in the margins.

I fully agree with all stated here. A good order I found was Guards Guards, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad then go back to the start with colour of magic and read chronologically from there. This lets you get hooked with some of the best books in the series and then read everything without missing out on backstory. That said colour of magic and the light fantastic arent awful they just arent as strong as the later books, being more parody of the fantasy genre than their own world building stories.

Very solid! I started with Eric!, of all things, and that got me hooked - Rincewind in a Faust parody is so good - but those are definitely the best starting points. I started with Mort, moved to Wyrd Sisters and then went to the beginning. My favorite scene remains the Fool walking past the castle guards with Greebo on his head. That scene made me laugh out loud the first 30 times I read it, and still gives me a chuckle...it's simply so perfectly cinematic. And yes, I reread Sir Terry a *lot*. The witches are my favorite, followed by Rincewind and Death.

I started with "Mort" simply because it was the first one I saw (it was in the small selection of paperback novels my local news paper shop had and it looked interesting). It was a decent enough starting point, though I do agree with Dominic, that there are better ones. If asked, I would recommend "Guards! Guards!". It's fun, it's clever, and it is set in one of the most important location of the DW universe (Pyramids, Small Gods and Moving Pictures all take place at locations we will never see again) with characters who will remain importent in later novels. Wyrd Sisters would work for the same reasons, but I just like the guards better.

I was working in my local public library when I came across Discworld and told myself, "you're gonna start with the first one and go from there." And I did, and I don't regret it, but I really like how you narrowed them down (and also your reason for not including Mort, good point there). Gnu Terry Pratchett

Personally, I‘d recommend Wyrd Sisters as a great first book since I only got hooked on the City Watch books once I read Feet of Clay. Actually, I think you could also start with Going Postal even though it‘s not among the first books. It might be useful to get to know things like PTerry‘s concept of golems via the City Watch series first, but I do believe the book will also work if it’s your first encounter with Discworld. Overall, I just think Going Postal is a great book and would also work as a standalone - and once you know more about Discworld via other books, you can always come back and enjoy the Easter Eggs you didn‘t find during your first read… ;)

When I got into Discworld, having never heard of them before, was by finding a DVD of "The Hogfather". since then I have watched any video adaption, read any book ( a couple of times ) and now listening to the audiobooks on youtube. As for favorite, it's a toss up between any of the Susan based, "going postal" or the Tiffany based.

And the ending killed me. I exist now as a ghost. It's true. But it was so amazing that I now wander this plane of existence fueled solely by the emotions I felt at the end.

Having started with the light fantastic, totally by accident, I can say that it's difficult to go wrong with any of the first few books. Even being a direct sequel, Pratchett did a fantastic job of reintroducing us to characters as they came up, to the point that I didn't realize it was a sequel until a quarter way through the book. And by that time I was so hooked by the relationships and personalities of everybody that I just read it anyway. I need to go back and read the color of magic, just as soon as I'm done with Mort.

I've often made the point that at some point your going to want to follow a character through the world by reading every book they are a major character in, in order. You might even do this for a first reading if your pick is, say, Tiffany Aching. I tend to recomend "Guards! Guards!" so folks start with the watch. Wyrd Sisters and the Witches is a good start too though.
