Discussing the 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐬 of Warhammer and Wargaming. With 𝐎𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧

Ойындар

There are many controversies and issues with Games Workshop games and wargames in general. Should there be free rules for games like Warhammer 40,000, should tournament play be the normal way to play? If wargames are difficult to make, should we just play board games instead? Is 3d printing morally ok or will it bring about the end of gaming companies? What about the Warhammer the Old World release, is it dead on arrival. Why has the Old World release been scaled back? Is Warhammer Fantasy a dead game? Join Christian Von Carmian and Olden Demon as he shares his experiences and insights from playing 2nd ed 40k though to 10th edition, discussing the game's evolution and the changing community.

Haven't seen the video yet, i saved it to my watch later tho. I just saw some comments about 3d printing and thought I'd share my ideas. I love that 3d printing can be used to make new retro miniatures that GW will never make again. I love that 3d printing can be used to make off-scale miniatures like 15mm if you want something between normal and epic scale, or even like 50 or 60mm if you want something like the old inquisitor scale miniatures for the short lived inquisitor game. I also like that you can make terrain to match whatever scale miniatures you do like to play with.

I have to strongly disagree that having free rules, i.e., an app that is automatically updated is a barrier to new players. It's a barrier to those who don't have a smart phone... maybe and even then downloading a PDF on a tablet or printing it is way easier as now we kind of have the worst of both worlds. Even if you like the physical copy of the rules in a hardcover book you still need to print out PDFs for all the updates. The app is behind a double pay wall, which is disgusting. I can't mention how many times I double checked my opponents rules using the initial FREE app and discovered they are out to lunch.

Yeah that segment stood out to me as a really bad take. Maybe I'm just not understanding an older generation that is less able to navigate a webpage but the idea that a physical book is easier to navigate than something like Wahapedia is so foreign to me. Plus as soon as there's any kind of balance update you have to go online and start dealing with PDFs anyways so the point this guy is trying to make seems completely moot. I also think that having stores full of printed products with outdated rules is one of the most hostile things a new player could possibly have to deal with. I have tried to help several people start playing the game since the start of 10th edition and I think the most frustrating thing for them was buying codexes and index cards only to find out that the products were already outdated.

I don't understand what's the problem with "Just go to the website and download the rules for free". Where is the downside? The physical codex can continue to exist for those who go to a store and want a physical thing. Nobody buys the codexes for rules anymore. The rules are outdated before the book is even out.

As in terms of translation: It's bad. Whenever a new codex comes out, everyone graps the english version and once that's runs out reserve the ones that are ordered while the german versions gather dust on shelfs. They're worded so strangly that you have to interpret the translation on top of the actual rules during gameplay.

I stopped buying anything in German from GW other than the occasional WD around ten years ago. Around that time they started using only English unit names in German texts, and it bothered me to no end. On top of the often sloppy translation this broke the proverbial camels back for me.

Such a good video. I just wanted to add that I've been 3D printing for some time before i got into 40k, my main Armies are true plastic. But i have small "opponent" armies like Necron, Tau and Orks that I've printed proxies of to play against for some variety. Also terrain, it's really nice to be able to have big detailed terrain. So in niche cased 3D is pretty great, but it's not mainstream, otherwise Games Workshop would be selling some kind of DRMed version of their 3D files.

In regards to providing a product of free rules and a book that includes rules and lore, Wyrd does that for Malifaux. They have their book for each faction, which includes all the rules but also all the current story, and even includes a lore page for each and every unit (while prefacing the unit section with some fun stories). Besides that, they have their app with all the rules for free, so if you don't care about the story, and just want to play, you have that too. On top of that, they also advertise a way to play their game online with other people for free, with no buy-in at all.

I have to agree with Olden Daemon's take on 3D printing. I love my printer, and I've printed entire armies, but I've also put up with quite a bit of technical BS and a learning curve that could easily put many people off it. ...and I continue to spend silly amounts of money on my made in the UK plastic crack, so it's hardly losing GW anything out of my paycheque. Addendum: in addition to the applications of a printer they suggested, I've found it's excellent for horde armies. Particularly if you want something like an IG infantry army that isn't Cadians or Catachans. Addendum II: it isn't quite as bad as made out. Resin is actually quite cheap, so a few print failures here and there aren't a big deal and they aren't THAT frequent if you can follow a decent simple guide online on how to calibrate it. And photo resin models are generally no more fragile than traditionally cast resin models. All that said, I agree it isn't for everyone, the biggest downsides being that it is possible to absolutely destroy your expensive-ish printer with a relatively tiny mistake, and of course the hazmat concerns (don't poison yourself kids).

On rules and codices, I think the free "index" rules are a reasonable thing for a new edition start. They should just be the basic rules for that faction/army and with little detail, the aim being covering people to keep playing. However, I also believe full codices should be released quicker for the main armies (Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Chaos, Orks, Eldar) and then release the secondaries and finally the chapter or sub-faction rule variations. The main rule book can then be re-released as a balancing act and errata release. Once that's done, we can then get scenario and special scenario rule books (like City Fight and such). This would keep an edition alive for 5 years or more and people wouldn't need to buy everything to play., but can buy the rules they need for themselves or as they change to a new army. Also, this would allow for the new special characters to be released in WD and as a downloadable and/or free index card in it's box. But who am I but an aged old bloke with a small amount of funds to mess with =)

Here is a suggestion that GW could implement to make it accessible for newcomers while not punishing veterans of the games too much: Make the rules free online as a living document (or make it free on their app for easier navigation than a bunch of links), use the new datacards for faction rules instead of the codexes for a lower price point. For deeper faction lore, keep the codexes but also include hobby tips, paint schemes, etc. It is super convenient to hand your opponent your army list in the form of datacards and it’s affordable enough that people probably wouldn’t mind paying for them. And it allows for more stuff to be put into the codex like wargear lore, concept sketches, etc.

Willing to pay monthly ( or a one buy and then repay for updates ). And with a battle report real time when you play against someone . It would help as GW would push to sell you minis and more work on the experience of the game. It also allows them to see with data how and what people play and are able to ajust

One thing I’ve been thinking about with digital rules, instead of printed books, is the future problem of editions being ‘lost media’, and being impossible to go back and play. I’m curious how easy it would be to fully play 40K 7th edition again, with all its mess of digital rules. One of my fears with the Amazon deal, is the prospect of GW getting absorbed my them. If the shows/films are popular it seems likely Amazon could buy them just to have control of the IP.

GW has a market cap of around 3.5 billion pound, I am not sure if Amazon is eager to invest enough money just to control a single IP. I like the universes, but I don't see a 40K show exploding in a way that would make such a deal worthwhile. At worst GW would want a way better deal to renew the right for the show, but in the end this is a mutual investment. GW probably doesn't have the capital to produce a high quality show that draws in enough people that pay money, so a partner deal will always be a thing.

The goals of 10nth, making 40K easier to play, and GW’s leaning into tournament play aren’t necessarily exclusive, but definitely pull 40K in opposite directions. I would like to see a version of 40K where we a base game that’s pretty accessible for new comers and for causal players, then GW can sell stuff like tournament missions and crusade books. Of for this actually work, GW would have to support the casual format, not just give three super simple missions in the core rules and forget it exists, like with open play in 9nth.

It might have been different 20 or 30 years ago, but these days GW is not interested in making the best rules it can - it just needs to not be too bad to drive customers away. The games were always meant to drive the sales of models, and contrary to popular belief the "games" in "Games Workshop" is not an indicator of GW being ABOUT the games. GW is a miniature manufacturer first, second and third, and while the rules are not strictly a complete afterthought, they are certainly not a priority. Regular edition changes and "balance passes" inbetween keep people invested and motivate more sales - and THAT is all that matters to those at GW making the actually impactful choices. Further down the pecking order there are people who are certainly competent in the games development side of things, but they do not have a say in how the ship is run. People will be a lot more relaxed with GWs games the moment they accept that those are only aimed to give you a somewhat working framework to play with your models. 40K in particular was never intended to work well as a tournament game, and despite modern attempts to APPEAR concerned about "competetive balance", THAT most definitely IS an afterthought.
