Yes, I imagine he was stifled when married to humourless Paltrow.
I love how Graham not only lets the guests talk, but when he talks his contribution to the conversation is priceless. Like his comment "Please welcome... whelmed" was hilarious.
I love that they all caught on to the correct wavelength to have that conversation. Thats a sign of intelligence.

Whelmed is an English word. It means 'to be submerged'. Not often used these days but the word still exists. One can be "whelmed with emotions", for example.

You know what?! Graham Norton is socially so brilliant that no, I sincerely feel he will never think that. From all his shows I have watched, I only get the feeling he simply loves it when this sort of spontaneous magic happens between these random guests. I applaud him for that👏🏽👌🏽😁
Boring fact time: being ‘full of ruth” did used to mean someone who was gentle and peaceable, hence ruthless meaning the opposite. But it’s not common anymore of course. Quality chit-chat from everyone here :)

I just love the fact all Grahams guests are having such a laugh on the couch
This is still one of my favourite pieces of all Graham Norton shows. The chemistry between the guests is phenomenal, just having fun with each other, without any Graham needed to bring an even lighter note. But maybe that is the genius of Graham. The secret of the red coach. It was certainly lost during Covid. And some guests just are unable to bond with somebody else. Madonna was truly hopeless. But these three, magic.
Rosamund Pike is just phenomenally beautiful. And an extremely underrated actress. I’m definitely overwhelmed and everything akimbo

@@ashperdite people can find things to criticise about almost any comedian. Some people criticise Michael McIntyre's bit about the yorkshire accent because he says that we say "t'" instead of "the" but actually we generally mash "to the" into "t'", so although I still find the jokes funny, the base for them isn't entirely accurate and some people think that gets in the way of the jokes

Overwhelmed has its origins in boating. When a wave crashed into a vessel, it might go over the helm. To be overwhelmed means that you have been overcome or swept away by something. I can’t imagine how, given the meaning of overwhelmed, the word whelm could be used since “whelm” really means ‘helm’.
@scootergrant8683

Where did you find this out. I'm intrigued.
@johnbutler5650

The one delight of the internet in this age of ignorance, is that you can find out nearly anything about ANYTHING! The fact that I now understand where “ Overwhelmed “ comes from is a small treasure!( seriously, no matter how sarcastic this may sound, I mean every word ) . Well done!
Was he channeling the ghost of George Carlin? :-) I love this sort of comedy, that unpicks language and examines it. Good stuff.
Since the English language with all its quirks is one of my most favourite subjects, as well as a source for daily wordplay, I found this super interesting. I have to mention _ruth_ and _ruthful_ are still perfectly fine words in English, though they don't get as much use as _ruthless_ and are on the verge of becoming completely archaic.
Love your clips!
Excellent delegation Graham!
This is the reason I watch Graham Norton show 😂
I love this! You can go on to deal with feckless. Can you have feck? Yes. Look it up in the OED. RUTHLESS? Yes, there is “Ruth”. Gormless? Yes. There is gorm. Yet we never use those terms. I have had great conversations with my English teacher colleagues about this very subject with two volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary in the room as a reference. And … I am a Canadian. We still care about the English language. We SPELL the English language. Zed. Not zee. TheatRE. Not theater. NeighbOUR. LabOUR. And so on. The English language is so wonderful as a result of the many different invasions that took place over the centuries. The Normans. The Romans. The Angles, Jutes and Saxons 5o name but a few. All have contributed to our rich and impossible language. There are more rules broken than conformed to and, as a result, I pity anyone trying to learn it as a second language but I revel in the richness of our language as a result!
I was one of the ‘groan it’s Michael McIntyre’ brigade but I take it all back because he’s absolutely hilarious here! Chris is handsome with a wonderful laugh and Rosamund is effortlessly beautiful and witty. Great couch!
Great to hear genuine laughter 😂
