Discussing Skateboarding with Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman
Спорт
Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured professor at Stanford that grew up skating San Francisco's Embarcadero. Andrew’s research touches on fear responses, as well as sleep and dream states and how they relate to learning. We called him up to share some groundbreaking findings that we and professional skateboarder Karl Watson felt other skaters could greatly benefit from.

Yeah I want to always have that knowledge as 2+2=4, so frustration would be more avoidable or less in scales, because it's irrational.

This is seriously the best thing I have seen in a while. I’ve tried to explain this to people and family. Skating directly translates in life. It makes you accepting, humble, and being ok with failing. It’s selfish and including at the same time. It’s pain and happiness. It’s life. I could go on forever. This is awesome. Jenkem, Ian, Karl you rule. Thank you.

Love these jenkem interviews
neuroscientist: be careful about getting dopamine from praise and not the actual activity karl: are skateboarders better than other people?
If Andrew Huberman wasn't the coolest scientist before, he certainly is now!
I'm about to be in tears because it's so satisfying skateboarding and the community is beginning to receive the real respect and recognition it deserves. "Once a skater, always a skater." Love you guys.

When it comes to skateboarding content, there’s Jenkem, then there’s everybody else.
I am a skater, teacher, and woman. He gives such sound advice. I’m so glad I took the time to listen to this.
I'm glad Karl asked that about (essentially) "getting dopamine from telling people you're GOING to do something". I actually read something about that exact idea, awhile back... and now I swear by it. I won't call tricks, or tell people my ideas with certain things ahead of time, things I'm doing/working on etc. Pretty crazy how the brain works. Plus, chicks dig it when you're mysterious. P.S. - Jerry Hsu's falls are always so gnarly and dramatic.

Not trolling. Just contributing to the conversation. Talking about something may be one step to make something a reality. I think the recent idea has been referred to as "to manifest your reality" by talking about it. Not sure how close language is to mental imagery (as far the brain connections go), but isn't there a study about athletes imagining better performance without practice and actually getting better? So maybe talking about doing something is a way of imagining it? In any case, there have been a lot times when I've said I'm gonna do something, and then I do it (of course, there's a lot times when I haven't). In any case, there's a fine line between hyping up something and then never doing it, or worse, not trying to, and actually making an effort (while talking about) to do it.
THIS WAS SO GOOD. “Once a skater, always a skater”
2 things: 1. Karl Watson the proof that skateboarding's fountain of youth...man looks 28. 2. Love Jenkem...don't quit!

wow this is next level. skateboarding needs more recognition like this!
I’m a skateboarder and a Neuroscientist, (currently looking for a job). Awesome to see that Andrew is a skateboarder, i’ve seen him in many podcasts.
Skateboarding basically saved my live. As a kid it was where I found acceptance and camaraderie. It was my escape from the world around me but also put me in touch with the world on some level. I quit for a few years and am finally getting back to it and it brings me joy more than anything in this world!
and damn Karl Watson you killed it as an interviewer, and damn Andrew Huberman for your kind and intelligent words

It was too good for me to comment on. I froze up after drafting three things then cancelling.
Something that is really interesting is the way the visual cortex creates a virtual map of space and obstacles, that's why when you are skating a park or a spot you already skated before, it feels alot smoother and conftier and you can even do tricks without looking at your feet or the obstacle. It is kinda like walking around your house without the lights on repetitively. Also another thing i find beautiful is reflex motor action (which is said mostly triggered by visual stimuli from the the periphery and not the center of the visual field) skipping or going around little kids in the park or getting of your board when encountering another skater is kinda like brothering the bandwith of visual awareness.
@mikehemens9359

Yah gotta love when my cortex does that.
Well I'm gonna try that fear eye thing being 44 now it's getting harder to shake it off and I've always said never stop skating it keeps you young at heart and mind..top shit jenkem...
Glad skate media finally got Andrew engaged. Let's get this man more involved in our dialogues!
Thank you for that whole explanation. As a skater of over 25 years and epilepsy all my life, the neurological education and monitoring I’ve gone through has been intense and amazing. Even after a second brain surgery at age 25 and working with specialists the brain stimulation of skateboarding was never really put to play in analyzing my issues or aiding them. Thank you for being in the nuero and skate world to share all that info!
I didn't think i could love this guy more ...... but apparently he just stepped up a few notches in my book!!!! EPIC!!! What a legend....... fall off get back up, best life skill ever
This ended up being waaaay more useful of a video than I thought it would be.
I was already a fan of Andrew by listening to him on Lex Podcasts, but now knowing that he is an OG my mind just blow rn

So dope. Love this channel and the creative content you put out. Keep them coming!
Yeeees! This was so good. What an informative and inspiring conversation. Thanks for putting this together.
I need more of this! Thank you Andrew and Karl!
This is magic! Huberman is Science Gandolph. Thanks for a crazy good interview. You know I love that breathwork.
Looking forward to this, awesome side of skateboarding to explore!
Wow, this is the coolest interview I've seen this year. And I mean that just speaking in general. Great job!
This conversation also reminds me of a recent interview Tony Hawk gave, where he talked about "not being Happy" when you finally land a Truck. Where you spent so much Time and Effort working on the Trick, that by the Time you land it you're just glad it's over. Great conversations to have about Mental Well-being and pre-empting the "Darkness" that can sneak in.
This was a great piece with some really refreshing insights. Karl is the man.
Thank you for this Jenkem! Much love and respect from Cebu 🙏🏾🙏🏾🤛🏼
Absolutely loved this conversation. Thank you Karl for your curiosity and Andrew for your knowledge. A matchup I never thought I'd see!
Solid, solid content!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed. Super interesting.
Mad Props to Andrew and Karl on this video! Growing up skateboarding in the 90's, I never got the respect or validation from the outside community though I was every bit as much of an athlete as the football players at my high school. Skateboarding taught me nothing comes easy in life and I have to have perseverance, dedication, and creativity to accomplish my goals. The information that Andrew is sharing is super valuable even now. I still struggle with fear. Fear of talking to a really pretty girl, fear of standing up for myself in the workplace, doubting my abilities, fear of starting a new career, etc. But when I really get in a bind, I think back to my time skateboarding, staring down that 8 stair set that I want to kickflip, knowing that its the 23rd attempt and my elbows are bleeding and my ass and hands hurt cuz the pavement was shit, and I build that mental state of SEND IT and apply that to the situation. I really want to start trying EMDR because at 38 years old I now super deep into mountain biking, sending big drops and gaps that are SCARY! So if EMDR can work there, it can work anywhere! And always, much gratitude to everyone here!
Consistently putting out interesting and worthwhile content
absolutely beautiful, great tips, interesting stuff, and man just to see how much passion dr. huberman has for skating really says it all. he seemed so compelled to make the main point that skating is unique, special, and incredibly helpful for your overall progression through life. nice
Karl Watson is helluva interviewer! Thank you to both G's for the valuable content!
Awesome interview ✨. Blessings to the skateboarding Community 🕊.
Cool interview, Karl! 🤜🤛

skateboarding helped me through depression, I feel lucky to have lived with skateboarding since childhood until now, these answers on the discussion confirms what I've been thinking all along, skateboarding is the best!!!
Really needed to watch this ⚡🧠⚡ thanks, Jenkem!

This made me feel good about being me and that's being a skateboarder. Thanks Andrew thanks Jenkem.
Ok best video on KZread now that I've finished it.
such a great interview, so glad I clicked on this video
Incredible discussion! I didn’t know he skated! The brain is so incredibly powerful, and I’m so grateful I found and stuck with skateboarding. I’ve been skating since 12, and I’m now 33. I still skate at least once a week, and I also try to incorporate skating into my KZread videos when I can because it has given me so much and keeps me young!
this interview is gold!
Really dope video really needed this
This is so cool! I can't believe Andrew was skateboarding when he was young. I was skateboarding too in the Netherlands watching video tapes of skateboarders doing moves in the USA including the first Jackass stuff haha. I thought he was cool but now I think he is a legend
This is amazing. I thought I was the only one relating neuroscience with sakteboarding.
Thankyou Both
