I did that, but it just took more time and one cannot memorize or learn that at one time. One needs to master one tense at a time before moving on to the next and gave all at once. My point still stands it should be broken down into several videos, but it is an excellent video.

57 years Jeffrey, ! well, we are probably of a similar age group. I've been studying spanish for about 40 years. But you know what ? I just don't worry about it. When I get off the plane I'm speaking as much as possible. AND I'm enjoying every minute. I can hold a conversation really well, A1-C2 do not enter into my mode of thinking, speaking is living and communicating and it's far more important than worrying about levels, and certificates. Well done, keep up there ,wherever " there " is !

Como siempre, tus clases son maravillosas. Yo tengo una pregunta, espero que me respondas . En español se usa el pasado para hablar del presente como en inglés, por ejemplo I didn’t know that you had a girlfriend. No sabía que tenías novia.. Aunque me refiero al presente como yo, no sé que tienes novia . O tenemos que decir no sabía que tienes novia Cuál es la forma correcta? Muchísimas gracias y feliz Año Nuevo

jajaja ya sabes Glen que es muy importante comer sopa de verduras para crecer y ser fuerte ¿Verdad? Y nada como una sopita de verdura en una tarde fría de invierno. Bueno, al menos para mí. En mi casa Travis me llama 'La Reina de la Sopa' porque en invierno, es lo único que cocino (aunque a él no le guste tanto jejeje). Volviendo a la clase, esta una lección con mucho para digerir. Me ha inspirado para hacer clases en el programa donde podamos aprender todo paso a paso, poco a poco y con muchísimos ejercicios para practicar ¿Qué te parece? De un nerd a otro (jajaja) nos entendemos. Nos vemos en la clase de esta semana que es.... uff un poquito controversial.

Esta clase era super útil. Por fin entiendo más como usar correctamente esa regla gramatical. Pero sin embargo tengo otra pregunta: 4:06 acá me pregunto qué tiempo usaría si Amalia no usa el indefinido: “dijo” sino el imperfecto como “decía” o el perfecto como “ha dicho”? En mi libro que llevo conmigo desde el bachillerato, también había esta lección, pero recuerdo que según las circunstancias el imperfecto queda imperfecto, el indefinido será el imperfecto, el perfecto será el perfecto del pasado. Pero a qué se refiere el cambio? Por ejemplo: Paco: Tengo que estudiar Amalia: ¿Qué dice Paco? Juanita: Dice que tiene que estudiar. Esto es fácil. Otro caso: Paco: Tengo que estudiar A: ¿Qué dijo Paco? J: Dijo que tenía que estudiar. Después de tu explicación también está claro. Pero qué pasa en este caso: P: He tenido que estudiar hoy A: Qué dice/dijo/ ha dicho Paco? Ahora la pregunta: J: Dice/dijo/ ha dicho que había tenido que estudiar? Porque no estoy seguro que inicia el cambio del tiempo. El verbo en la primera frase en este caso “tener que” o la pregunta de Amalia del verbo decir y este tiempo decide que tiempo seguirá?

.Muy buena leccion. Tendré que volver a verlo. Presente/imperfecto Tengo que ir al supermercado. Dice que tiene que ir al supermercado Dijo que tenía que ir al supermercado

Reported speech - an aid for English speakers learning the Spanish estilo indirecto. Although this topic appears complex it follows similar rules to English for the majority of verbs and transformations:- Verbs tense change Presente --> Imperfecto Pres. I am eating Imp. He said he was eating Imperfecto --> Imperfecto Imp. I was painting. Imp. She said she was painting. Present perfect --> Past perfect Present Perf. We have been there. Past Perf. They said they had been there. Pret. Indef. --> Pret. Indef OR Past perfect Pret. Indef. I went to the gym. Pret. Indef. He said he went to the gym OR Past Perf. He said he had been to the gym. Past perfect. -->. Past perfect Past Perf. She had seen him earlier. Past Perf. She said she had seen him earlier. Futuro --> Condicional Future We will do it tomorrow Cond. They said they would do it tomorrow (or could be another date eg. today or yesterday dependent on when the report is made). Condicional --> Condicional Cond. I wouldn't have done that. Cond. She said she wouldn't have done that. Futuro perfecto --> Cond. perfecto Future Perf. I will have finished by 5. Cond. Perf He said he would have finished by 5. Cond. perfecto --> Cond. perfecto I would have done it if I had time. She said she would have done it if she had time. The changes and transformations are a little more difficult when imperatives or subjunctives are used for the reporting verb (see below) but even here they follow the normal rules regarding subjunctive ie. When the verb in the principal/independent clause is an imperfecto or indefinido (and reported speech always uses one of the past tenses) then the verb in the dependent clause will be the imperfect subjunctive :- Present Sub. -->. Imp. subjunctive I want you to do that Quiero que hagas eso Ella me dijo que quería que hiciera eso Imperative. -->. Imp. subjunctive Eat! Come! Ella le dijo que comiera If the verb in the dependent clause is the present perfect subjunctive then the past perfect subjunctive (pluscuamperfecto del subjuntivo) is used in reported speech:- Present Perf. Sub. --> Past Perf. Sub. It's good that he studied. Es bueno que haya estudiado Ella le dijo que era bueno que hubiera estudiado. In addition to the verb changes other changes are required in reported speech. For example if I say:- "I will call you tomorrow". Then if you are reporting this to someone else tomorrow you might say:- "He said he would call me today". Note the changes here - the subject changes from 'I' to 'He', the verb changes from 'Will' to 'Would' (as above future->conditional), the object has changed from 'you' to 'me' and the time has changed from 'tomorrow' to 'today'. These are standard changes that we make every time we use reported speech in English and the same changes are required in Spanish. Reporting verbs fall into two categories - verbs of the heart (WEIRDO) and verbs of the head. The WEIRDO verbs always trigger the subjunctive in reported speech as long as there are two subjects whereas the other verbs only trigger the subjunctive when negative - again these are standard subjunctive rules. The main difficulty here is knowing which is which. Querer is perhaps the easiest to recognise as a WEIRDO verb:- Direct speech - Quiero que vayas al supermercado. Indirect/reported speech - Ella quería que fuera al supermercado. But with non WEIRDO verb such a decir then:- Direct speech - I'm going to the supermarket Indirect/reported speech - Ella me dijo que iba al supermercado. BUT in negative form:- He didn't say that you did that Él no dijo que lo hicieras Likewise Positive:- He thought you could do that Pensó que podrías hacerlo BUT negative:- He didn't think you could do that No creía que pudieras hacer eso But choice of the reported verb often depends on how the listener regards the original speech as much as what was said and how it was said. If the reporter wants to convey a truly accurate description of what was said then it can be done by a direct quote - eg. She said "I want you to go to the supermarket", but in Spanish as in English the reporter usually chooses to paraphrase what was said. It is often paraphrased to 'colour' the description and indicate not just what was said by the original speaker but how it was said and interpreted by the reporter. Some examples for this are:- Original speaker could say:- 1. Go to the supermarket! 2. Will you go to the supermarket? 3. I would like you to go to the supermarket. Reporter of this speech could say:- 1. She told me to go to the supermarket. Imperative! Me dijo que fuera al supermercado 2. She asked me to go to the supermarket. Weirdo (pedir) - Me pidió que fuera al supermercado 3. She suggested that I to go to the supermarket. Weirdo (sugerir) - Me sugirió que fuera al supermercado... Likewise a simple original statement such as :- It won't work. Could be interpreted and relayed by the speaker as:- He told me it cannot work He insisted it wouldn't work. He said it wouldn't work. He said he didn't think that it would work He didn't think it would work He advised me that it wouldn't work. He questioned whether it would work He told me it wouldn't work And many more options.... Spanish uses this same 'colouration' but even more richly and by choosing the appropriate verb and 'mood' a plethora of additional information is relayed by the reporter regarding what they understand and feel about the original speech. This is perhaps a major reason why this topic is regarded as difficult but I hope that the above explanation shows that we use exactly the same process in English. Remember that you will only have to use reported speech to relay what someone else has said. The crux of the matter and what should be the main focus is 'what is said originally and how it is said by the speaker' - remember you will be there to listen to it before relaying it to someone else so you will know if it was a statement, a command, a question, a request or whatever, so you will know the speaker's original intention. How you relay this to others is up to you and your own thoughts and interpretation of what was said and how it was said..

Pero en mi opinión, particularmente cuando tu español empieza a ser más avanzado, algunas preguntas surgen mucho y aveces la gramática nos ayuda a poder entender algunas cosas. ¡Sharon no te desanimes! Estás haciendo un trabajo estupendo. Esta clase es para estudiantes avanzados. No tienes que implementar todo esto en tu siguiente conversación. De hecho, practicar conversar en voz alta con otra persona es un ejercicio completamente diferente. Te recomiendo comparmentar tus estudios. Un día puedes concentrarte en la pronunciación, otro día en aprender frases y estructuras, otro día en conversación y comunicarte en voz alta, etc ¡Muchas gracias por ver la clase y espero verte pronto por aquí! ¡Sigue adelante!

I really couldn't get my head around what would be the point of the past subjunctive but with this now maybe I see a glimmer (it's not all sunk in with clarity but I can see it's something to do with reporting what was said in the past when the past was the present). In one of the ( *very useful* ) books I have _Spanish Verbs and Essentials of Grammar (by Ina W Ramboz)_ the author talks about the *future* subjunctive actually existing but doesn't give any examples, simply saying that it is *_extremely_* rare. _Which implies that most native Spanish speakers don't use / understand it either._ It would be interesting to know how to form "the future subjunctive" and when it would be used.

Sea lo que fuere con el futuro del subjuntivo, lo usamos muy poco todos los días y se lo ve mucho en lenguaje legal y el libros literarios y proverbios como la frase que escribí aquí al principio. Por ejemplo: Adonde fueres, haz lo que vieres. (When in Rome, do as the Romans do). Pero es muy poco común en el español de todos los días, se usa más el presente del subjuntivo en su lugar.

¿Que dice Brenda? Dice que tiene hambre. ¿Que dijo Brenda? Dijo que tiene hambre Así respondería un hablante nativo. Entonces, la pregunta sería: ¿La gramática describe como habla un nativo, o determina como debería hablar un nativo?

Excellent class and presentation, But it reminds me of when I took Algebra in summer school and missed a day. Normally algebra is taught over a semester and they usually cover 1 chapter a day, but in summer school they cover mover than one chapter a day. I had to go to Chicago for a physical, so I missed a day; when I returned I was lost for the rest of the class. In Algebra, the equations are taught in steps and students must master one before moving on to the next. This was like covering the whole textbook in one sitting. This should be broken up into at least 4 or more videos. This is an example of "more is Not better", but "less is better". Otherwise an outstanding presentation and a teacher who is easy to understand. A student cannot learn all these tense at once. It's like a list of items to buy at the store. If my wife gives me 3 - 4 (or even less), I can remember (hopefully), but beyond 4 I'm Not going to remember. It's the same way with grammar tenses, less in one sitting is better. One must master these one at a time. Hay que aprender uno de estos tiempos a un tiempo.

Muchas gracias por tu comentario, Carlitos, para próximos videos lo tomaré en cuenta. Lamento que te hayas perdido en el curso de Algebra, me imagino que después entendiste todo ;D Una vez me sucedió lo mismo pero con ciencias, ahora me da risa pero antes estaba estresada. Un abrazo.

@@HolaSpanishese tiempo era in los 80's y ya terminó 2 clases más de algebra con buenas notas. Creo que es mejor aprender español y algebra en pasos y con repetición.

Sugerencia: Podría pausar el video después de cada sección para estudiar cada paso. Entonces, si necesario, podrías "re-wind" y ver la sección muchas veces hasta que puedas adelentarse a la próxima sección. También, puedes poner la velocidad a .75 para poder escuchar mas claro. Puedes hacer su propia lección de todos los pasos de hablar indirecto; así que tendrás las lecciones de "pasos" que querías. Podrías repetir cada paso muchas veces. No tienes que ver el video completo cada vez. También, podrías descargar el Pdf. Buena suerte.
