Discovering Wainwright | Short Film | 4K

In May 2023, I set out to walk all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District National Park.
Whilst I'm familiar with the name Wainwright, and have been using his books and words as my guide; one question has been burning in my mind as I've been going on my journey so far ... who was Alfred Wainwright?
To find out more about the man that made the Lake District famous, I reached out to Wainwright's archivist, Chris Butterfield - to discover more about the enigmatic figure behind the guidebooks charting the local fells...

fantastic video. what charming humble man. totally agree the ideal number for hiking is one with much respect however i do disagree on his comment on my favorite place in the peak district. he said something along the lines of. nobody loves bleaklow all those who get on it love to get off . I love bleaklow but it’s all personal preference.

What a great great film Cameron. Concise but full of interesting highlights; insightful, revealing, warming and a very considered look at the man behind the guides and drawings. Brilliant and really enjoyable. Thank you!

Excellent presentation and use of old and new material. As a child, our family moved close to Lancaster and looking across the bay I always wanted to be up in the hills, thanks to friends who used the Wainwright guides to introduce me to fellwalking. Later Dad took me to a book signing in Kirkby Lonsdale where I briefly met him in person, but was too shy to speak much. Having moved around England and Wales a fair bit, it is now great to be just outside the western edge of the Lake District. His work - writing, drawings, maps and diagrams - will continue to stand as a unique achievement.
