Ukrainian Motanka Dolls are a type of traditional folk doll that has been handmade in Ukraine for centuries. The word "мотанка" translates to "rag doll" and refers to the doll's construction using fabric, embroidery, threads, and some other materials, but is collected without a needle. These dolls are unique in that they are typically made without any facial features or details, instead relying on intricate patterns and symbolism to convey meaning.
Motanka dolls are often created as talismans and are believed to have protective and healing properties. They are commonly given as gifts to newborns, newlyweds, and those in need of comfort or protection.
Each Motanka doll is unique, with patterns and materials chosen to convey a specific message or intention. They can be made using a variety of fabrics, including linen, wool, and cotton, and are often adorned with ribbons, beads, and other embellishments. These dolls are not just objects of beauty but are deeply rooted in Ukrainian folklore and culture, serving as a symbol of the country's rich heritage and traditions.
🔸 In this video, we will discuss with Yana:
🔹 the origin of Motanka dolls
🔹 their functions for our ancestors and for the modern people
🔹 role of Motankas in the Ukrainian culture
🔹 why do Ukrainian Motankas not have facial features
🔹 why Motankas almost always portray women
🔹 what is the process of creation of Motanka dolls
🔹 who mostly orders Motankas nowadays
🔹 why more Ukrainians started to order Motanka dolls during the war
The video is 100% in the Ukrainian language and has subtitles in multiple languages (please check out the settings).

Thanks to Nika to share and bring this story here. I like stories, and when someone tells about one with so much passion, precision and peace, it's so much enjoyable. Very helpful to know more about Ukrainian culture. I went to Ukraine in 2019 because I have one of my best friends there and I still believe I can return in order to learn, see, and possibly fell in love. Love is everywhere, which means Ukraine a dream place too.

Nice hold music. I like that there are various levels of learning available in this video. Your speach has subtitles and you are careful to enunciate every syllable clearly. You also include English descriptions of the images. Even if I was not a Ukrainian language learner I would be interested in the traditional dolls. Your video editing is first class! I can see the work you have done. Слава Україні

Hi, thank you for expressing the world about ancient Ukrainian Traditions, like Motanka, Vyshyvanka and Ivan Kupala. I am living in India, and from a Vedic family and surprisingly, many of our traditions are similar. We have Veshtis (our traditional dress) with the same embroidery patterns found in a Ukrainian Vyshyvanka. Also, many words that we use in daily life, related to prayers and traditions are similar to Ukrainian words as well. Many of our God names, and names we keep for our children are same too. We also have a tradition of keeping images of Gods and putting a well embroidered piece of cloth over them. We are not so different after all. Wish to see more such videos.

@@VERBA_SCHOOL Thanks for the reply! 🤗 I was meaning to message you again with a question, if I may: where can I find info on the different levels of Ukranian language learning? You sometimes mention them in your videos, but I think it would help me to have the different levels laid out in front of me, with all the different elements of vocabulary and grammar etc. (even if only in Ukrainian, I'll put it through a translator and it'll be good for me to build up some grammatical vocabulary anyway). I need language goals! Last year, when I started from absolute zero, I set myself the goals of reading, writing, typing, basic pronunciation and...distinguishing Ukrainian from russian both in speech and in writing (I really, really couldn't...now I really can ☺). I'm still slow, but I've got all that down. My listening comprehension is so much better than my speech though, because I listen to Ukrainian radio and I have a few vloggers I follow on a regular basis. Thanks for all your work, I really enjoyed the video you uploaded earlier today as well... it's almost as if you recorded that for me!
