Discovering more at Blea Tarn

In this video entitled, "Discovering more at Blea Tarn" I prove there is always more to photograph after capturing the honeypot locations!
A few weeks ago I headed to the Lake District National Park to photograph the gorgeous location know as Blea Tarn. It's a very popular location with landscape photographers and sightseers alike. It's popular mainly due to how easy it is to find. It's literally an easy 1-minute walk away from a National Trust car park.
I have photographed the area before and I have also visited the location several times during workshops. Whilst it's always busy I rarely see photographers venturing away from the main location. The main composition is what we call honeypot locations.
I set myself a challenge. Can I create other nice images from close by? I don't intend to walk more than 10 to 15 minutes away from the a1 position and I don't intend to climb up any mountains.
Well, how do you think I got on?
Please leave a comment
Cheers
Gary

We are in The Lake District and leaving tomorrow after a lovely stay. Long journey back to Cornwall but it has been worth it. We felt that we had to visit Blea Tarn following your video. However, here is the thing..... we got lost. We did find it eventually, just in time for sunset, and my husband being fed up and cross over all the pot holes and mud his poor car had to go through was putting a fair bit of pressure on me to get the perfect shot or else. As I had dragged him there I was expected to come up with the most iconic shot. The wind was blowing, the rain and been bad and the Tarn was full so no big stones or reeds could be seen. However, I did get a shot that has pacified him enough to stay married to me. I didn't push it to go any further to get other shots as by this time there was steam coming from his ears. I did get some from further around the Tarn though at the detriment of my socks getting a tad wet. Thankfully he still loves me as I treated him to fish and chips after.

Very true Gary, and I try to stop myself now from just doing 'run & guns'. First time I went to Blea tarn I did the 'Honeypot' location then walked clockwise part way around the lake. Second time I walked anti-clockwise to the white house then went up the slope before returning to the 'Honeypot' shot again. Neither time I had good light so it's on my list of 'To Do's' for this year.

A go to place in winter too. The honeypot is transformed into a different place when much of the water is frozen. You don't need to blur the water and you can get just a little unfrozen water around the rocks leaving them in their own little pools adding something extra you don't get at other times. Snow on the Langdales too. What's not to like?

This series will really illustrate the point of the question; what is the best camera? Why it’s the one that you own of course! You’ve also given me great inspiration to deeply explore Fairy lake near Honey Harbour on Georgian Bay in Northern Ontario. It’s a small lake on a small island that is located in the greater Georgian Bay. Previous visits have always been with another couple so there’s little opportunity to explore. I’ll have load the kayak and head there selfishly on my own after the winter thaw.

There's a nice shot that I took from the other side of the tarn, down a sort of ghyll. It leads right down to the tarn and is awesome. But it's a bit of hike. And more than ten minutes from the honeypot.

Nice one Gary! I was there last week doing exactly what you recommended and made a great image from the gate at the far end of the tarn, looking back at the 'honey pot' end, then had coffee looking down into Langdale/Mickleden/Oxendale and grabbed another 'new' pano. Just got back from a week of looking for new images in familiar locations around the Langdales and, yes, bagged a few 'classic views' but also made some unexpected discoveries and experimented with mono and long exposures; great fun after being locked up for so long. This weekend is going to be a post-processing fest! Keep up the good work Gary, and stay safe.

I agree Gary, shoot them because (a) you learn about what composition makes a good photo (b) there are likely to other good shots around and (c) you never know, you might get some unique lighting or weather conditions that just happen to make your shot stand out from the thousands of others. Subscribed.

I went there fir the 1st time just over a week ago for the sunrise, it was a spur of the moment thing and it was a bit of a trek from birmingham. My timing was spot on as there was snow on the langdales again. I wandered down through the gate after getting my intended shots, but didn't find anything at the time that floated my boat, but as you have shown i missed out on a lot. However i also went through the forest and to the wall beyond it and not sure my shots there worked, but it is one to revisit. :)

A great spot for photos last visit low cloud very moody even in “poor light” you produced some wonderful shots. Agree with comments you made you either need to be on your own or a very laidback partner.. It’s on a great circular walk from the Langdale valley. Now going to check my phots I took, think I avoided the honeypot one.

Hope to get to Blea Tarn if there’s an easy path and nearby car park when we go to Windermere for a week in October. I’ve seen so many videos on it and as you say it’s “the” go to place, some of the surrounding hills don’t look too steep either. Cheeky question, is that coat from “SuperDry”? Only asking as I’ve seen one practically the same online and I’m looking for a new waterproof jacket that’s not heavy, I’ve got my winter ones.
