Tinuy-An Falls
Bislig, Philippines
Sometimes known as the little Niagara Falls of the Philippines.
LOCATED ON THE ISLAND OF Mindanao in the Philippines, Tinuy-an Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall said to be the widest in the country. The falls measure 95 meters (312 feet) wide and 55 meters (180 feet) tall. Tinuy-an Falls cascades over three tiers, with the second being the largest and most impressive.
The name Tinuy-an comes from the Cebuano word Tinuyo-an, which translates as “an intentional act or performance to attain an objective or goal.” The name comes from a legend associated with the history of the waterfall. According to the story, the native people of Magdiwata Mountain were enslaved by a tribe from the hinterlands of Agusan. After being treated cruelly and forced to do manual labor, the Magdiwata Mountain people developed a plan to free themselves. While rowing across the river on a gakit (a bamboo raft), they jumped off into the water, and pushed the raft that held their enslavers over the falls.
