I went through severe violence same time that Chris did, oddly enough an hour outside Atlanta. I left at 17 and wandered too, first to Atlanta. He and I likely just missed one another. We'd fir sure have been friends. I know what he needed, what he felt, he was looking for. I cant begin to explain what it does to you to have your parents hurt you. I think of him often when I'm at my dr appts at Emory every month. I'd always wanted to make it there. Alaska is my goal one day. Just to be away but not alone, maybe somewhere with neighbors, a city. I struggle with pain. I have no family. I'm 48 now and alone. My childhood, the violence, it haunts me. It did my baby sister too. She gave up last April 9th, age 32. The memories were too much for her. I have to still go, bus or not some day....for her.

I'm so sorry that you went through that. I too suffered with violence as well, but not by the hands of my parents. I was sexually abused by the neighborhood boys. Happened from the age of 4 until the age of 10, when to they finally were of legal age to move out their family homes. I never told a soul. I suffered in silence. But like you said, it stays with you, I've often thought about just ending it all to get away from all these feelings I have, but I can't do that to my family. I'm so sorry that you lost your sister. Here's hoping you finally get to do what you want, and make that journey.....

I'm sad and kinda glad in away that the bus was moved. I saw it in 2018,,,, seeing it, compared to when Chris was there or even 10 years ago was so different... You can feel Chris, if that makes sense? It's a sad place but also When you see the vast wilderness , you indeed shed a tear for the beauty of it all. However, Since Chris was there , the bus has not been left in piece! every window smashed... bus damaged, pieces torn off. Shotgun holes everywhere. You don't do that to a memorial of someone who died there. Most were good people visiting... many not! May it rest in piece with Chris. People who say he was foolish... NO> he lived they way he wanted. He will always be remembered.

The bus became a pilgrimage site for those who sought to understand Chris’s motivations and to experience the same rugged beauty he encountered. It’s heartbreaking that some visitors defaced the bus. Perhaps they didn’t fully grasp its significance or the pain it represents. But you’re absolutely right: A memorial deserves respect, regardless of our personal opinions about the person it honors.

We were not as gutsy as you guys, we took a helicopter to the bus and stayed 24 hours, they picked us up the next day. It was very special to spend that much time there. Someday I may do the actual hike and packraft across the river.

THE MAGIC BUS IS GONE. It was air=lifted out of the area last year to an undisclosed location by the Army, I think. Anyway, it's gone. That is a dangerous area to go to as several hikers have drowned trying to cross the river. There are safer places to go to if you want to "find yourself".....

Saddens me to see the footsteps he took just to find his own death. Watched the movie, and broke my heart when he was trying to go back into society. :( but couldnt.

I'm happy the bus was removed from it's location, people have no respect for the one who made them go there, for such an inspiration to everybody. I hope they can preserve the bus and fix it somehow that can be exposed to public. It's disgusting to watch all that garbage, people who normally settles camping anywhere should leave it better than they found it. It's the end of a sad but inspiring story.

@@sanfrancisco9661 I read that it was no longer an operating bus, and had been converted into a mobile shelter for contractors, and had been towed to that location. The Stampede trail was hardly a roadway that vehicles could negotiate, and there aren't any bridges over the rivers that have to be crossed.

Yes it was towed with 2other buses as a shelter for the workers who were trying to build a drivable road, bridges, etc. But they realized it was going to be too much, and abandoned the project. They were able to take out the other 2 buses, but couldn't take bus 142 because the rear axle was broken. So it remained in that spot. Until it was moved to Fairbanks Alaska.
