Discover the 5 Pros & Cons of Living in Chicago

Let's discover Chicago!
Chicago’s walkability makes it easy to explore to city on foot. From stores to entertainment, you’re never far from what you need in Chicago. The iconic “L” subway system connects you throughout the city where you never feel the need to have a car, and buses and trains provide convenient options if your destination isn’t in direct route of the L.
With 77 neighborhoods, Chicago offers something for every walk of life.
Summers mean you’re heading to Lake Michigan. If you’ve never seen it you’d think you’re looking at an ocean. That’s how big Lake Michigan is. People enjoy the beaches, boating, and an 18-mile Lakefront walk and bike trail.
Coming to Chicago you get the great pleasure of exploring 67 museums, 600 parks, and Lincoln Park’s free zoo. Chicago’s cultural scene without a doubt is a rich and diverse atmosphere.
Restaurants are Chicago’s thing. With 22 Michelin-starred restaurants and over 7,300 dining options, Chicago will satisfy your itch.
Chicago is a sports enthusiast’s dream. You have two baseball teams, a basketball team, a football team, and an ice hockey team.
Chicago winters mean frigid temperatures, wind chills below zero, and early sunsets. It is a harsh season, but it is only a season and it will pass.
As one of the largest cities in the US, Chicago’s cost of living is 20% above the national average. Housing prices have been on the up for a few years now, day to day necessities to survive have gone up, and property taxes will be a shocker for many.
Chicago takes the cake for traffic and congestion. Chicago was ranked #1 in the US for congestion and #2 in the world. In 2022, residents lost 155 hours annually to traffic.
Chicago’s sales tax rate is 10.25%, including state and local taxes. If you come from a state where taxes range from 6-8% then this will definitely hurt your pocket.
Be prepared to circle around for a spot or venture farther out to find a spot especially the closer you are to downtown. Metered spots are something you’re going to get used to living with. You always need to keep an eye on that meter otherwise you’re going to get a hefty fine.
Every place has its pros and cons and Chicago is no different.

If you move to Chicago from another State in the US, great chance that you’ll like it. But if you’re a middle class from Asia or/and already had experiences living in Europe, you may feel very disappointed with the quality of the services compared to what you paid for.

I appreciate your perspective. Living in Europe myself for many years I can tell a difference between there and here. A lot has to do with the mindset of society and culture to me.
