Guyanese Folklorist Wordsworth McAndrew said, “the folklore of a people is at the root of their being, and to cast it aside is to set oneself adrift culturally -an act which one performs at one's peril.” McAndrew argued for a respect for Guyanese rituals and challenged all Guyanese to experience them. This is the aim of the News Room’s new series, Discover Guyana, which intends to promote local travel, art and culture. McAndrew wrote the poem Barriat as an ode to his special love for "the colourful and symbolic weddings" of our Hindu ancestors.
