Discipline: Debunking the Do’s and Don’ts | Episode 29

How can we help our kids grow into who God has called them to be? How do we create a healthy environment for our kids to flourish? And how can we curb unhealthy and unwanted behaviors without going too far and potentially damaging our children?
The way we discipline our kids is a massive part of their formation. As parents, the weight of this can feel overwhelming. Let’s be honest; discipline can be quite challenging. Many of us never had a healthy model to learn from, which may have left us feeling uncertain about how to navigate it. If this is you, rest assured, you are not alone!
Today on At Home with the Bevere's we are discussing how to discipline in a way that honors God. You won't want to miss this one! Addison, Juli, Alec, and Lisa will lend you their personal experience on the topic of discipline, leaving you with both insightful frameworks on the subject, as well as practical ways to implement it in your home.

This could not have come at a better time. I have 3 kiddos who are 3 and under, two of which are twins. My husband is gone for work for a couple weeks, and we don’t live close to family (military family life). They are sick too! So it’s been exhausting to say the least. I had one of my weakest moments with the kiddos yesterday, and I screamed in their faces. I was absolutely insane, and I broke down crying in front of them, and all they did was hug me and wipe away my tears. Wow, the Father’s love in my little babies! I was completely heartbroken and I confessed and asked for their forgiveness. And this moment changed me forever and i thought I had ruined their lives forever, and my husband was trying to speak life and pray over me. I spent a glorious quiet time with the Lord this morning and then this video comes along. I have so much hope that God has ordained good works beforehand for me, my husband my children, and our family. Thank you for these. Your family is a blessing and I pray for y’all often.

I wish that I had had someone to speak life to me and pray over me in my weakest moments, and I wish that I had been able to be humbled when mine were little. I have teenagers now. And they don’t talk to me because of the things I have done. I only want to beg them for forgiveness but I can’t even see them now. It hurts me so much that I did this.

I was a single mom for 5 years raising 3 kids. I did so many things wrong. I was exhausted and frustrated and angry that I was left alone to make everything ok. I wish I would have heard this at that time. All my kids are adults now and thankfully God redeemed the time and we are very close. This is such a powerful message that every parent needs to hear. Thank you for sharing.

I really REALLY needed this! I need prayer for being able to walk this out practically! We have 3 wildly wonderful boys ages 13, middle turning 8 on 11/9, and our youngest son is 5. I'm so desperate for God to help me navigate being a good Mom so my boys don't have the traumas I did growing up with angry parents.

My children had no father figure and it was not easy bringing up six children on my own. It's good to know that households where there are two parents who are Christians go through similar challenges. I know for sure if it were not for Jesus, the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit our lives may have ended up differently. Glory to God

Have a almost 5 yr girl who's a absolute conduit on God's love and I have a 11month old girl. But I struggle with my anger when she doesn't listen. Even though I always apologize for my outburst to her n she always forgives me,it is not okay. Thank you guys for being raw & breaking this down. It's something that's so simple but it helps so much to hear it in the words you guys used.

Thank you for talking about this. It’s so important. My heart breaks for all the parents who don’t understand how to lovingly discipline. I was blessed to be raised in a home that lovingly spanked the 4 of us. We all love and bless our parents and thank them for how we were raised. I’ve raised my own children the same. Even when they were young they saw the benefits of it as they watched other families interact. The Word of God is still truth.

Yeah I am one of those people who never knew loving discipline as a child and because of that, despite my best efforts, I still reverted back to the only way to “parent” that I knew. It has been detrimental to my marriage and my family. It’s hard not to carry resentment towards my own parents for not loving me and disciplining me correctly, because I know that directly correlates to the way I was for the past 13 years of my marriage and parenting. I am now going to a counselor but I feel like it’s too late and I am going to be alone, with no one.

Thank you thank you thank you for yet another incredible podcast that has made me feel less alone in my parenting struggles! I have 3 girls 13, 5 and 2, my eldest child I adopted and that has come with its own challenges. I love God and I want my kids to love God and I want to do this His way. I am a first generation christian who had a terrible upbringing so I don't always know if what I'm doing is right, but when I hear your family speak you confirm that I'm not as far off as I think 🙌 even though I have a lot of doubt and many around me that don't agree with my beliefs. Please keep rolling out these podcasts and wisdom, the impact your family is having is beyond anything you can imagine. God bless you guys 🙏

This is probably the funniest episode I have ever listened to with you. So much love, honor and appreciation with this topic. My father spanked us. The ONLY time I remember the details is when I saw my father cry hard when he disciplined us. We have very healthy and honorable family relations. I love my father.

Wow the story that Addison said about his friend and his daughter was just so much like my story with my daughter who is 3 and I’m a single parent aswell and it is so hard to know what to do when you’re kids start acting like that, so this was so good and helpful.

As a single mom of 7 and 15 grandchildren I am known as a disciplinarian (you can imagine that amount of chaotic sit). However by the grace of God I rarely disciplined out of anger . I was more free with hugs , affection and affirmation than discipline.

Your videos have blessed our family beyond what I can express. Thank you so much for your wisdom and sharing your hearts, the truth and your experience! My wife & I have 4 kids as well and we love to soak up like a sponge all that you are offering. We were wondering if you could share, practically, what you do in terms of discipline. When you aren’t dealing out consequences, what is your process? And if it does come down to consequences what are they and what is the appropriate discipline for that specific action. We find that we struggle to come up with consequences that are effective. Thank you! Ps…you don’t know us, but we already consider you to be close family friends ;) you have mentored us for many years now and we so appreciate you all.

We've got such a strong and special kid as Alec is in one of our sons. Everytime Lisa tells her stories with Alec we simply look at each other:,,That's our son!" For us parents, it is a real everyday fight, however (or thanks to that), he's true gift from God. We learn and grow so much while parenting him...thank you for sharing your stories and life, Alec and Lisa. What a hope and encouragement for our family. By the way, the best movie by Alec has been his wedding so far. Such a testimony and glimps of God's kingdom on earth. 🔥 Love you guys, God bless you!

I have a 5 year old son who is IDENTICAL to that 5 year girl. Thank you so so much for this conversation. It is tough to discipline a child like that. Cause it makes them to the MAX level .. so you think to yourself. There has to be a BETTER way. This is not working. It is making us BOTH misreable

Begin with Humility! I think they mentioned it but you have to remember you're their parent and you have the authority and right to rise above and set the example from now on. Like they said, going to your children and just apologizing for the ways you feel convicted about in how you've treated them or reacted can rebuild so much trust❤
