My dad gave me his entire wood shop before he passed some 20 years ago. It's all sat in my basement idle until a few months ago. Work slow down and impending retirement has renewed my interest. I found a disk just like that and had no idea what purpose it served...now I know. Thank you

My dad didn’t have a nice workshop, but I sure learned a lot from him. I always think of him when I’m working on an interesting project. Good luck on putting his tools back to work-including the mysterious sanding wheel!

This is when mechanical engineer meets woodworking and shows extreme talent. I was thinking of adding a circle disk to my 1950 Rockwell 6x 48 stationary sander, this is great inspiration to model after this.......Thank you

I got a 10 inch two sided sanding disk with my old Craftsman RAS. It works great being able to flip grits. And I can use in on my 10 inch Delta table saw. Great accessory. I need to make this table.

Great! How does it attach-is it threaded onto arbor? Just curious since LH threads on RAS and RH threads on table saw.

@@brianweekley5700 it's got a hole like a saw blade so the arbor and nut extend part the face. That's the only drawback I see. Since it's a 10" disc it does have more surface to work on than an 8" disc does. I also got a drum sander that threads into the accessory side. I believe it's 2 1/2"-3" diameter. I also found a small collet chuck for accessory threads. I'm not sure if it's range.

Thanks. I found it with a search. The only problem with these motor sanders is the high rpm’s. They can remove a lot of material so you probably want to use a finer grit sandpaper.

Thanks for your great idea. I've made myself an 8" sanding disk on the lathe and it runs beautifully. Now to make the table. Thanks again

Hi Brian, I like it! On an old post over at the forum, someone said that a cardboard spacer between the disc and washer would keep the disc from locking with the washer due to friction forces. Tim

Dear Brian, thanks for the video and it is something I need to consider to the list of gadgets you can add onto a RAS. Because of you and other people’s positive comments I went ahead and bought a second hand 14” RAS. Boy is it a beast but I love every thing about it. I may have trouble finding a 14” sanding disc plate but a 12” should be pretty easy to come across and that will do. I think sandpapers in 14” will also be a problem. Once again, thanks for the inspirational ideas.

Thanks. I don't know if they made sanding discs to fit the larger saws with the 1 inch arbors, but if they did, that would be nice to have. Perhaps you could make one that gets tightened on like a blade? Jon Eakes has an article about making your own from plywood (fat enough so you can recess the arbor nut).

Dear Brian, Thanks for the feedback. Some interesting ideas there. What I should try to do is achieve something that I need and haven’t already got. I have some trenching tools for the RAS which cut 12mm and 25mm trenches respectively. I thought I could use the latter to get a flat area by cutting, advancing and repeat. Trouble is the finish is certainly not level. Have you ever used a tool that rotates about the vertical axis and the face is aimed downwards and works like a rotary lawnmower?

Just got mine off eBay last week for $37.66. Running 150 grit discs on my DeWalt MBF and it cuts fast. My MBF has no hex recess in the end of the motor shaft, so there is no need to punch a hole through the sanding paper. (I see you are using the Super MBF motor....hence the hex recess.) Love the disc guard on the RAS too.

How durable is the average sanding pad? Can I expect to sand around two dozen pieces of wood before it wears down significantly, or does it lose effectiveness quickly? My experience with quickly wearing out mouse sanding pads or 5" orbital ones is common but is this different?

It’s probably going to depend on the quality and grit of the sandpaper. I find this works very well for the things I use it for and haven’t needed to change the sandpaper often.

Thank you. Can you be more specific about which set screws you are referring to? If you're talking about the ones on the back of the yoke (for setting horizontal and vertical heel), I did replace those with socket head screws (you can get them at a good hardware store).

Do you have a video showing how you restored your saw? Your saw looks like it just came off the showroom floor! It's insanely nice. WOW. Have you tried the Delta saws or the Craftsman saws?

Thanks. Check out my video about the restoration of my 1957 DeWalt MBF: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIJs0MOwk9LKmqQ.html No, I’ve never owned a Delta or Craftsman saw. DeWalt was the inventor of the radial arm saw and their older, cast iron models are top notch.

Brian, I am so impressed by the dust collection of the sanding station. Do you think it is the shroud around the sanding disk that makes it so good? I would imagine the shroud is forcing dust down by the movement of the disk. IU haven't watched one video of yours that I haven't been impressed by and plan to copy, especially the dust collection for the RASaw! Thanks for sharing!!

  • @brianweekley5700

    @brianweekley5700

Thank you very much! Yes, the shroud is important for good dust control on this sander. It directs the incoming air flow to enter from the front and around the edge of the disc (so you have greater air velocity where you need it). This sanding disc works great on both my lathe and RAS!
