Disc Brake Converter 2.0: Trek 930 Goes Full Disc Brakes!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Converting the rear brake of my 1994 Trek 930 Singletrack from rim to disc brake.
The disc brake mount converts old bike frames to accept disc brake calipers.
Take out or loosen the bolts, remove the wheel.
Attach the mount to the frame (rear stays). Align the hole with the dropout and then tighten the bolts, the mount should sit flush on the frame. Once you have all the bolts tightened, check and make sure it’s sturdy before putting back the wheel.
The mount looks sturdy.
Put back the wheel with the disc rotor installed, insert the QR skewer into the hole and tighten it to secure the wheel in place.
Install the IS to Post adapter (160mm) and then the disc brake caliper.
Remove the old rim brake and replace the cable with a longer one.
Are disc brakes better than rim brakes? Leave me a comment below.

    I've recently purchased this same adapter so good to see it being installed, got a 94 Diamond Back that I don't want to part with but rim brakes just don't cut it for me now, especially not in muddy and wet off road conditions.

    @@paullangdon9575 unfortunately this adapter doesn't fit my frame so back to square one. I'm working about the Chaser one, but they are in very limited supply, as far as I can tell they are only available from the manufacturer, and based in America so gonna be quite expensive.

    Are disc brake callipers compatible with V-brake or calliper levers? I think there's a little difference in their leverage. This looks a lot better than the other adapter from an engineering point of view. You could even have a tri-brake set up, with a rim & a disc brake, if you lived where there were a lot of steep hills, or rode a heavy cargo bike or tandem. I was thinking it might work as a drag brake on the later. Did you do a long term review of this one? In racing, they originally found disc brakes can fail catastrophically if they get too hot. I don't know if new materials have changed that.

  • @jonahwhale9047
    @jonahwhale90472 күн бұрын

    The critical measurement for this adaptor is the thickness of the drop outs. The adapter is set up with a 5mm gap, so you can't go under that, unless you bodge it even more with spacers, & you really can't go much over that without the steel plate bowing badly, e.g. 7mm+ alloy frame drop outs. In the real world, you've got a 50/50 chance of having to do some filing to remove excess welds to make it fit. Some frames might just work, some definitely won't. Likely you'lll need to put it on & take it off many times to make it work, & need to touch up paint.

    I just put mine on and I don't see an issue with having the steel plat bow out since that's not where the caliper gets bolted

  • @jonahwhale9047

    @jonahwhale9047

    9 сағат бұрын

    @@maxfeeser2604 I guess it depends on how much, & I don't know the tolerances. I"d guess the first victim will be the paint on the frame? Also, I noticed that although the adapter is set up at 5mm, the rotating foot is thicker so the steel plate already does not sit flush. May be it's not supposed to? I tried it on two frames I had. One was steel & too thin. it was a no go unless I was to make up a spacer. The other was alu alloy, a Giant with a recessed well for axle ends. It was a disaster. First I had to file away some of the excess weld & bend in the drop out to make it fit, then the inside of the well, then the disc interfered with the wide diameter seat stay, so I had to space out the axle nuts with a washer, & ended up with the wheel slightly not aligned to center. My advice would be, "if it does not 'just fit' your frame, stop, & move on to another". I did, however, answer someone else's question, "can it fit with a solid axle?". It can, if you drill out the small hole for the skewer to 10mm. You'll need a 175mm or preferably 180mm solid axle to fit. But it then becomes a PITA,, requiring removal when you take the wheel off. That will, however, stop thieves stealing your wheel! I also had to file the steel plate to clear a mudguard mounting bolt hole ... which means it will rust now, unless I paint it. The chemical blacking on the alloy pay of it is nice ... but cover it in masking or sellotape while you trying fitting/bodging it otherwise you will likely damage it.
