One of the best vw engines

Aside from the throttle body there's very little separating the newer and older engines. About to pick one of my failed engines apart and see what gave out. This video is a treat!

It’s from 98-99. 2000 would be the atw and the switch to drive by wire. I have the same aeb in my 99 Passat. It’s a ripper. Best cylinder heads of all the 1.8ts imo.these respond awesome to bigger turbos and can make 350hp on stock internals. I just recently swapped the cam Chain tensioner and cam chain. Chain stretches and tensioner fails around the 150k mile mark and rattles. I would recommend changing those. Also the timing belt and tensioner and water pump. And pull the oil pan and put on a new pickup on all 1.8t’s that are removed at any point.

the location you mentioned as a possible distributor drive actually holds up. i have a mk3 gti with the 2.0L and that’s actually exactly where the distributor is. those two motors are actually super similar

legend. i know a lot about these engines from owning S3s but this has helped some things click in my head for the 944 swap i’m doing

@@armandomeza3501 Hahahah glad you asked! I did get it right first time, atleast i hope so! I ended up selling that engine when it was rebuilt to a friend of mine who is putting it into a Lada 1200. Afaik he has not installed it yet :p

Cool, in my beetle though the engine is sideways, coils lined horizontally and turbo tucked in back, the coolant sensor thats usually a B to replace on these is actually conveniently located up front with nothing in the way, the belts and pumps are on the left side.

That "Torx-like" tool and nut are triple squares. It's a VW/Audi thing, and possibly other German automakers, as well.

Also, this is very interesting to see, because your engine block is literally of a N/A 1.8L RP MK2 Golf. I own that very engine and everything is the same, except for the cylinderhead of course. Looks like green coolant in the water pump which might explain your corrosion problem. Or the previous owner just used hard tap water and the lower flow volume through the oil cooler sleeve gave it a place to collect. OEM VW G12 coolant is a reddish-pink color. I think you might be able to use the newer G13 coolant which is a purplish color but don't quote me on that.

I have a 2001 AUG 1.8T. I wish they had kept driving the water pump externally instead of from the timing belt, because some people have bent valves when water pump seizure destroyed the timing belt.

7:55 That crud is caused by the use of coolant that is not recommended by VW. These engines require pink coolant. Most Americans use regular green. Even worse is to mix diffeerent type of coolants.

@@vsvenson That's the biggest reason why so many Passat B5s don't have heat. The incorrect coolant and the crud clog up the heater core, killing the coolant circulation. Thus no heat.

I remember the pink stuff, looks like children's amoxicillin.

That corrosion is what happens when you don't use G12 or equivalent coolant in a 1.8t. One of the first things you should look for when buying a used VAG car is if it has pink coolant. It can lead to a lot of problems and headaches not running the right coolant in these engines.

Super video and can you tell the difference between 1.8t and 1.8 (adr) without turbo? And can turbo be put on 1.8 without turbo?

Nice video. There are some checks/measurements that should have been done with disassembly to check lifter and rod clearance.

Do you know the lobe height of adr 1.8 engine without turbine?

I'm gonna 1.8t swap my seat altea xl (BAM 1.8T) I'm wondering if the engine will be in stock position (horizontal) or if I'm gonna have to change that as well and have it vertical.... And yes, I'm properly building the engine with stronger internals. I'm hoping to make 350-400bhp after it's all done. I'm buying a bare engine so it doesn't have a turbo or anything, so it makes no difference in cost to me

I'll probably start a rennlist thread at some point - but here's the place to watch!

Be sure to replace that oil cooler, as those are prone to internal leaks, leading to contamination of coolant with oil and/or vice-versa.

Hey, amazing video. I have a 2002 VW New Beetle 1.8T and for what I've read, the engine echanges a bit, e throttle, serpentine belt and a chain driven by the crankshaft turns the oil pump. My block is the 06A block, I was wondering if these engines still have that chain that drives the intake camshaft. Thank you so much.

Yes, the 06a engine also has a chain drive for the exhaust cam.

Would you say that the crankshaft from BAM engine fits into the AVC? I just try to assemble one from two.

Hello, i bought one of these AEB engines along with the whole car with 151.000km(A4 B5). I've disassembled everything and i saw in the intake ports in between the valves there are cracks in all 4 cylinders. Also the head bolts are not like the ones you showed but like a torques with dubble the ends. I don't know what to do now. Should i open the head and buy another one or should i keep it like it is. I don't even know if the head has been taken off before or not.

Do you need to hohn your bores before changing the postonsrings?

Timing belt tensioner is fluid-damped. Later models have an internal spring -- I don't know about the AEB engine.

about 25:30 you said one cam is offset. I think it’s because the middle valve sits higher than the other two, so if we want to open them at the same time the middle one needs to be offset.

Good eye for spotting that. I was actually talking with the machine shop that rebuilt the head, and he said the lobes are offset because the 3rd valve is angled differently - so, you're right, this way they all open at the same time.

The 1.8T is a legendary power plant. So tunable.

at 34:12 how did you get the front crank bolt removed. Mine wont come out and I cant get the crank off without removing that bolt. Is there a special tool for this?

Do BEX coded engines have bigger rods??

Both knock sensors have wire leads about 18" long to plugs at the rear of the engine. On mine, the plug connectors had crumbled away - you might have a similar situation. If you take the intake manifold off, you should be able to easily reach it... maybe you can snake your hand under there with everything all together?

To do the oil pump on these engines do u need to take the oil shaft that’s run by the timing belt out first???

No, the oil pump and its drive shaft will slide out of the bottom (the drive gear stays in place)

How many miles/km did you have on this engine, do you know?

How many miles/kilometers has this engine done until this rebuild? How would you evaluate the state of this engines cam shaft chain and tentioner. Do they need to be replaced?

I don't remember exactly, but over 120k miles. Cam shafts look really nice. I haven't really looked that close to the tensioner yet. Frequent oil changes really help!

Thanks for checking in! I'm a little slow... other projects have gotten in the way. All of my AEB parts are waiting for me to find some time... Will kind of depend on how race season goes in the spring - if the cars I maintain don't break, I'll put this engine together.

The windage tray by the oil pump? Good enough to be a baffling during racing?

oil and coolant mixing means there is some problem - usually it's a head gasket, but it could also be the oil cooler housing (under the oil filter).

This was out of an A4, so I think that was the 180HP configuration. I'm planning on making about 220 at the wheels. This is going into a race car, so a lot of the wiring harness will be custom.

Lifters are hydraulic. I know the AEB engine was used in 2002 - I'm not sure about 2003.

the engine bays they are put in are so tight, people with bigger hands can't work on them.I have recently repaired my turbocharger and cleaned my pcv and i come to the conclusion they have put effort to make most repairs relatively easy compared to the complexity of the car and engine bay space.

@@two_number_nines that's fair enough I did the timing belt on my gli which was okay. I now have a Audi s3 8l 225 which is tighter and have to replace the timing belt around the engine mount. It can be a challenge but in my opinion well worth I love these engines

Mine is an AEB out of an 1998 Audi A4. I believe the AEB has larger intake ports than the later ones. I think all the 1.8Ts have potential - what's your application for it? A swap like me?

​@@vsvenson Does the 944 give you the height to mount this engine and still clear the steering rack? Volkswagen tends to design rather tall engines. It would also be quite interesting to see how the CG changes with the 1.8T. I figured I'd be coy about it, for my own reasons, but had you also considered the venerable Vee Reihenmotor?
