That weather book got my attention.... The Mark Lawrence books sound interesting.... And, your cat's tale was hilarious!

Great video. Thank you. I have to say I struggled with Children of Ruin as well, personally I found the spiders really easy to identify with in Children of Time, but I really couldn’t get invested in the octopus, their personalities were just so mercurial. That being said I did persist, and while I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the first one, I really, really liked the third book Children of Memory and it absolutely needed the context of Children of Ruin. I’m really in favour of DNF-ing books you don’t enjoy, but if you can persist, book three is a very different story and well worthwhile.

I felt THE EXACT same way about COT!! I didn’t go on either. I DNFd How High. I just couldn’t do it. I have a live hate relationship with Mark Lawrence. I didn’t love “the book that wouldn’t burn” but I loved the concept. I love that you geeked out over the weather guide! I just picked up a PNW Audubon guide that I’m reading a little at a time 🤭

Yeah after reading Children of Time (even though it was super cool), I'm surprised that it's as hyped as it is.

@@OnefortheBooks I feel this way about every Tchaikovsky book I’ve read so far! I like them but don’t love any of them.

I loved both 'The Trail Of Lost Hearts,' by Tracey Garvis Graves and 'Station 11,' by Emily St. John Mandel.

Very sad to hear you didn't finish Children of Ruin, which I found every bit as brilliant as the first book (which has a smart, utterly ingenious resolution). Yes, the themes of the second are the same (evolutionary development, first contact, and so on), but the story is not at all the same because we're dealing with different species, different situations. I've recently finished the third book and once again the ideas are just jaw-dropping. Also, very moving in places. I'd encourage you to go back to the series... but I know what's like having too many books and not enough time!

New subscriber here! I agree with your thoughts on How High... However, I like sad books and so was enjoying it but ended up being disappointed. The whole interconnected thing just didn't work for me and gave me very "there's no point to anything" feeling. However, I will be keeping an eye out for the author. Also, I've read 3 of Nghi Vo's Singing Hills novellas and enjoyed them all (hence me waiting for the next installments)!
