When they were playing in London they almost came to blows with people because they kept calling them Yanks. They would angrily respond “we’re not Yankees were from the south!” lol.

They were a southern group based in Florida, recorded in muscle shoals Alabama .They're concerts where worth every penny because they gave you everything they had . And people where good to each other.

That lead singer here, the immortal Ronnie Van Zant is the only one that can just stand still while singing and have your full attention

The iconic Southern Rock anthem. Skynyrd closed their shows with Free Bird and everybody in the house knew what was coming. So glad there is video for posterity.

Free Bird is ALWAYS their encore song. By the end of any show, Ronnie’s vocals are tired. I’ve seen them twice. He was an excellent lyricists and had good vocals. You’re right about his range, but he was solid and had a raspy quality to his vocals. He began singing in church, as a kid. Fun fact about the band’s name. In high school, they had a gym coach who strictly enforced the school’s “no long hair”policy and a couple of the boys were suspended from school because of their hair. The teacher’s name was LEONARD SKINNER. So, as kind of a joke (and a finger in the air to this gym teacher) they called themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd. After their success, the teacher and the boys became friends, and all was well.

Ronnie Van Zant, the vocalist, was the leader, writer and the spirit behind Skynyrd. He didn't have the range of Zeppelin's Robert Plant but he was good enough. He was 5 foot tall and went barefoot on stage. A good dude, too.

They did that song as a tribute to Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of The Allman Brothers who were killed in separate motorcycle accidents 1 year apart and about 2 blocks apart.

No light show, no special effects, it's the middle of the day. It's all about the music, I miss those days. Also, you have to remember, they were on tour, this is the last song after playing for 2hrs or so, anyone's voice would be raw, it ain't easy

Saw them twice in concert back then, great band, and one hell of a song.

I just cant get enough of that version, this is what a live performance is all about the crowd is playing the band.

The best live version of this song is from the Knebworth Festival in England in 1976. Skynyrd was playing before a headline act call The Rolling Stones ! The stage was constructed to look like a mouth with a long tongue sticking out. Skynyrd was instructed to stay off the tongue as that was for Mick only. In true Skynyrd fashion- Ronnie herded his Mules ( that was his nickname for his guitar players) right out on Micks tongue to finish the show.(Funny- bassist Leon Wilkeson runs out of cord on his way down the tounge and has to turn back) Its widely known that Skynyrd blew the Stones away on their own turf and their own stage that day. That entire show is terrific , you should check it out

No wonder people go see so many talentless ppl.. it's all about "them" being popular on social media..NOT about the music & talent in front of them and ppl being together & having a blast right?! I'll be 62 & I STILL can't sit still when I hear this (& others like The Moody Blues, the Stones, Pink Floyd, The who, the Doors, Led Zep etc. ) there will NEVER be talent like we had back then bcz it comes too easy w/shows like "American Idol" out there now.

You'll never experience anything closer to a musical religious experience than being in the crowd live during the guitar section of Freebird...

I was at the last concert of the original members. The plane crashed after leaving. I saw them four times. It was wild...real wild. LMAO My soon to be wife couldn't go to the last concert because she was sick. The seating was general admission, so when the doors opened, I gave up selling the ticket and chose getting on the floor. Big mistake. It got so crowded you were literally held up by the crowd. People were getting crushed at the stage. Then someone lit a pack of firecrackers in the middle of the floor. All of that before the concert even started. It eventually settled down as people moved into seats and aisles away from the floor. I still have that untorn ticket in my collection. I've been offered some good prices for it.

Ronnie ain’t Freddie Mercury, but then Freddie ain’t Ronnie. Ronnie was the heart n soul of Skynyrd. His vocals were what drove the band n his personality kept them together. His timing was impeccable n he was always right in the pocket. Try I KNOW A LITTLE for some swing!

One of the Skynard stories: Ronnie was tired of playing the big coliseums and wanted to play a smaller venue where he could connect with the crowd again and see their faces. So he had the manager book them into a small club in Seattle as “The Curtis Lowe Band” (The Ballad of Curtis Lowe was one of their hits). The night of the show they found out they hadn’t fooled anyone and the line to get in was miles long.

If you didn’t see this you wouldn’t believe it! 100,000 people in sync! Best live rock band! I was 16 when this came out, always rated #1 rock song for years! Great time to be alive, I love the seventies.

Twin lead guitar solo...not 3 Although this video hit the KZreads a few years ago, we thought you'd enjoy hearing the isolated guitar-solo track from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." The solo on the song-which was played by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington-comes it at Number 3 on Guitar World's list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time.

I was a senior in high school when that concert took place and you are right, we were living. It is interesting to see how our children and grandchildren just assume we lived puritanical lives and have no clue about anything. Of course, I thought the same thing about my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Vocals?!! RVZ was a genius and his sweet home Alabama, southern sound I think fit perfect in a bigger band. RVZ never wrote anything down, all in his head.

Gary Rossington and Alan Collins was one of THE MOST underrated Guitar Gods... RIP AC And Billy Powell my God Sadly this was also only a few months before Ronnie, Steve and Cassie Gaines died in that horrific plane crash This band. They were harmonious... no competing. Three guitar players no problem. No one was showing up the other. Wish they all lived longer.. Wish we all could LIVE like back in the day....

actually Allen Collins and Steve Gaines were the two best guitarists, they handled all the lead parts and Rossington was rhythm player.

@@bitchnguy Fun fact that has gotten lost in the translation since that awful day in October of 1977. Steve Gaines was relatively new to the band. He mostly played Ed King's parts. His sister Cassie is who recomended him to Ronnie after King left the band. She was the back up singer who also died in the crash. Same with the drummer Artimus Pyle. People forget that although he is a great drummer and is in fact much more talented than the original drummer, he is mostly playing Bob Burns stuff. Bob Burns is the original drummer and he was there from Day ONE. He just...well, went nuts and had to be replaced. Don't take me wrong. LIVE, this is by far the best lineup Skynard ever fielded. To the last man, they were bad ass and they were more cohesive and ego free than ANY band ever was. But let's not get it twisted. Other musicians ARE responsible for a lot of this music.

@@michaelchmiel166 I think Steve was the best talent in the band. He could do it all and helped give them a much-needed spark, not only as a virtuoso guitarist but as a vocalist and songwriter. Steve had an extra layer that the others did not have. Few bands could touch them on a live stage circa 1976-77.

They definitely did rock, and you are so right... We did live in those days... There were so many great bands, but Skynyrd was for real. Life was so fun and care free. Thanks for sharing.

Now that second part of the song was special, and that's why they got 100,000 people coming to there shows, blows me away everytime I hear it

This was literally three months before most of them died in a plane crash. I was 16 then and partied pretty hard ... I am somebody's grandma now and still do. It was a good time to be a teenage boy working in the grocery store in the frozen food and dairy section. LOL No bras with headlights on bright. That's where I met my future wife when I was 15, and yes, she was braless and wearing one of those halter tops that showed side boobage. She caught me looking.

Ronnie was an amazing live singer as well as the heart and soul of the band. Fun fact, after Ronnie died his brother who looked and sounded a lot like him took over and kept Skynyrd alive.

Fun fact: that jam session originated when they were nobodies playing in bars and would play multiple shows in one night, so the band added an extended jam session to the end of their last song to give the lead singer a chance to rest his voice before starting the set list over again.

Fun fact: Allen Collins (lead guitar in white) wrote the music for Freebird when he was 17 years old. Its in the Netflix Skynyrd documentary.

One of my favorites is T for Texas T for Tennessee with Steve Gaines on guitar what picker he was..... RIP Steve..

The flag was a sign of the times. The band ditched it in the 1990s in favor of the stars and stripes saying that the rebel flag didn't define them.

Interestingly, growing up in the north and having family from the south, the rebel flag always meant "south" to them not any ideology or anything other than being proud of being from the south. Only until later on did people tie racism into it. There are/were hard feelings for what Sherman did to Atlanta\South still to this day. Somethings are not always what they appear, or what the TV tells you.

Fun fact: Ronnie Van Zandt, lead singer, never wrote a word down to any of his songs. He created and sang them all by memory.

Fun fact, Free Bird is now and will always be the all time rock n' roll guitar anthem. They were in a plane crash that took Steve Gains, his sister and of course the great Ronnie Van Zandt. My favorite member of the band fell apart after the accident and was paralyzed in an accident later on. His name was Allen Collins and he's the man in white playing lead guitar for this amazing song. To me the image of Allen playing is super iconic with all that hair flying. These guys are what rock n' roll is all about.

i think in regards to his vocals if you compare it to anything today you realize this is a dry mic. zero effects whatsoever. his vocals are laid back. this is also the encore so imagine he has been singing probably for 2+ hours as well. i would love to hear any vocalist today use the same equipment with zero help from effects. it would be very interesting to see the reactions using old equipment from todays musicians. then you think about the level of the musicianship on display with the drums guitars piano etc with zero help from new technology, it really makes you understand how next level a lot of these bands were/are.

Sad fact: the lead singer, a guitarist and one of the back up singers was killed in a plane crash that same year.

I first heard “FB”, 1976, in the Army, a bunch of us sitting on the floor, waiting to do an exercise. A female soldier played off her cassette recording. I was hooked! I became an instant “LS” fan. Never really thought of Ronnie Van Zant as a great vocalist. He had the right voice for the music, and songs he wrote. Thanks for sharing!

Don't know if you knew this about Lynyrd Skynyrd piano player was the roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd at one time until they found out he was a piano man and that he is great piano Man rest in peace Billy .....

Allen Collins, playing at the end, wrote that guitar solo when he was in high school

This is not a criticism of Bizmatik's critique of the "normal guy" vocals, but I think one of the reasons why this song appealed to so many was that the vocal sounded like the singer was everyone's peer, that is, someone that a lot of people could relate to. I'll add that it's often a real drag when you hear other people trying to pull off this vocal style. Props to Bizmatik for reviewing this song!

The piano player , Billy Powell, was their roadie. He helped set up and take down all the equipment at all the concert tours. One day they were working on “Freebird”. Billy said if he had a choice he’d play it differently. They didn’t didn’t know could even play. They told him to give it a go. He sat down and played what we here right here on the piano. The fired him as a roadie and hired him as the piano player as part of the band.

Actual story is , they were loading out from a gig at a high school- they were in the schools band room waiting for a rainstorm to pass so they could finish the loadout. They were talking about the song and there was a piano there so Billy said "this is how Id play it" and sat down at the piano and changed the course of Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was a huge part of their unique sound- RIP Billy

Love your reaction.. Gary Rossington said in an interview that Ronnie had polyps on his vocal chords and they had to cancel many a concert because of it. He also said Ronnie wanted his brother Johnny to eventually take over singing in the band and he’d step into the managing part. Personally, I love his voice. He was the Common Man.. A lot of their songs was written about something they have when through Give me 3 steps was written about something that happen to Ronnie one night at a bar Simple Man was written after a conversation Ronnie and Gary had with their Grandmothers

Yup he crashed his new Ford Torino. Ronnie was inspired to write the song as a warning about their overuse of drugs & alcohol. Ronnie later stated that he had a creepy feeling things were going against them so he decided to write a morbid song. Three days after the album was released the bands plane crashed killing Ronnie, Steve, Cassie and asst road manager Dean Kilpatrick.

This band was Jacksonville, FL. Lived there many years. Band was named after their teacher, Mr. Leonard Skinnard. The obviously change the spelling to reflect the southern drawl. 🤩 Enjoy your reactions!

The original demo was a 3 minute ballad.. Al Kooper thought it wouldn't get airplay.. Alan Collins guitar solo is the most recognized riff in America..

This is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song of all time.

The words written by Van Zant's long time friend, the late Charlie Daniels, after Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick, and pilots Walter McQueary and William Gray were all killed in Skynyrd's plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi on October 20th, 1977.

The singer also wrote the lyrics and his voice is perfect for the message of the song.

Allen Collin's wife Kathy actually came up with the first line of the song. Allen had that lyric and chord progression since high school.

I agree with you - Ronnie Van Zants voice is not on point here. Just my opinion.

Played this song everyday on the cafeteria jukebox. 1977-78 in high school. I think half of our high school was at this concert.

That's my grandmother in the front roll ! WOW ! She is 75 years old and still ROCK'N !!!!

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Loved this!!!!! And the second half is what this song is all about!!! Watching that crowd and watching you react to that was freakin awesome!!! Hahaha Looks like a good time!!!! And I mentioned this back in the Zeppelin “Stairway to Heaven” video, THIS song is still requested at any local bar where a live band is playing!!! 😂😂😂 There will always be someone at some point during the night (usually someone who has maybe had a little too much to drink 😂) who yells out “Freebird”!!!!! Hahaha And of course, the vocals are much better on the studio version ... but when the guitars and the drums sound like that who cares?!?!?!?! Three months later the singer , guitar player and his back up singer sister died in plane crash. Rest of the band survived. Ronnie and Steve can not be replaced. ❤️

I was at that show!! It was a great line up ... Santana, Peter Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I have asked my children to play this song at my memorial service , on that day. I saw them play this song in concert. They ended the concert with this great song.I was one of those girls…lol. A near equivalent quality to this song is “ Green Grass and High Tides Forever” by the Outlaws…pure magic!

You just heard the best of the best rock bands ever. You need to just get the album The Best of Llynrd Skynrd bc all of this songs are great.. They ate my favorite band of all times. Have good one

When i was younger i use to listen to the behind our garage where my brothers used live. I fell in love with long hair then with Alen Collins and Artimus Pyle. Omg they were beautiful!!
