Disability Etiquette - Respectful Ways To Interact with People With Disabilities

Ойын-сауық

Learning respectful ways to interact with people with disabilities is a great way to ensure people can fully be a part of our communities.
People with disabilities are individuals, and everyone is different. The best way to know how someone wants to be treated is to simply just ask them. It is always better to ask than to make assumptions.

Thank you for making the point that people with disabilities are all individuals, and are therefore all different. Thank you for addressing the stereotype that people with disabilities are heroic, or that they should be pitied. I appreciate your four fundamentals of disability etiquette!

Thank you! I have a service dog and as usual. People see a cute puppy, not me the handler. I politely request that the public speak to me reminding them she’s working and is illegal to distract her. Especially since she can’t speak. That I can speak and I love to talk to people. No one believes she’s a service dog because of the fact everyone thinks that a toy poodle can’t be a service dog because she “can’t guide me.” Also, i look “healthy for a 23 year old person”. Im far from healthy, I have severe anemia, severe acid reflux (aka Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD) and I have severe social and emotional anxiety with ADHD, possible Asperger’s syndrome. My dog is what we call a multipurpose service dog. She’s a psychiatric and medical alert and response service dog for my psychiatric and medical disabilities.

It's true that people with disabilities aren't always treated fairly or equally especially when someone is scared or curious about disabilities that they don't fully understand like autism, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, blindness, deafness, diabetes, food allergies, and other medical conditions we can think of. To be honest nobody knows how to interact with people with disabilities due to misinformation about conditions and disabilities that aren't true but plain wrong.
