Con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) is a longtime resident of a luxurious coastal resort, where he enjoys the fruits of his deceptions -- that is, until a competitor, Freddy Benson (Steve Martin), shows up. When the new guy's lowbrow tactics impinge on his own work, Jamieson resolves to get rid of him. Confident of his own duplicitous talents, Jamieson challenges Benson to a winner-takes-all competition: whoever swindles their latest mark first can stay, while the other must leave town.

you lucky, I almost literally had a heart attack and died !!! This movie is sooo underrated !!
Probably one of Steve Martin's most impressive acting scene he's done. He acted so great and subtle it was hilarious!
The look on Steve Martins face is hilarious! These two guys were brilliant together! One of the funniest films ever made!
Our whole family rolled over with the biggest belly laugh we've ever had together watching this. I knew it was coming, but the other five had no idea. THANK YOU, Martin and Caine!
I laughed for 30 minutes straight from this scene. My friends thought I lost my mind. My stomach hurt for 3 days from the laughing.
Look doctor, he's so happy that he's crying! Hahaha xDD!!!!
When I first saw this scene, I laughed until my stomach hurt!
This is the funniest movie scene of ALL TIME.
That run up cracks me up. One of the funniest scenes ever created. Have 2 watch it again.
This is one of those films that seems even funnier when you watch it again with other people, especially if they haven't seen it before. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is another one of Steve Martin's great comedy performances, John Candy is brilliant also (may he rest in peace)

Yes!!! I once (re)watched this movie with my twin brother and we just laughed and laughed 🤣🤣🤣 Cousin Rupert scene is another gem💀💀💀
In Michael Caine’s book The Elephant to Hollywood he says that this was his favorite scene in the movie. AND that it was one of his favorite films he ever did. He also said that Steve Martin was a shy man. It’s a great book/excellent read. I watch this movie at least once a year:it’s THAT good.

Indeed. He adlibbed "...the Third." to give it another whack. And it makes the scene so funny
The look he gave Steve Martin when he whips him the last time is so good. Like someone upset at their dog lmao.
Still my favourite scene! I was in tears myself with laughter!! lol

Steve Martins face when he grabs his temples has me dying here. Ah man this movie is hilarious 😂😂
Caine is a brilliant actor. He has seriously underrated comedic abilities.
One of the best comedic scenes I've ever seen, even though I don't watch movies twice, I've seen this several times.
I have just watched this film for about the 100th time- I love it. I bet they had great fun making it.
One of the first masterpieces of the post-modern film-era.
Michael Caine is absolutely brilliant in this film
Watching this scene for the first time with my dad was one of the funniest experiences ever
This scene was classic! The timing everything about it, PERFECTION!
One of the best scenes of the movie. I was crying, lauging so hard.
I remember this scene when I was a kid I was laughing for months
One of the Best and Beautiful Comedies ever filmed.
“Look doctor, he’s so happy he’s crying.” 😂🤣
The best bit is the change of camera shot at 0.50. Steve knows it, we know it. Michael is going to take a run.
Michael Caine preforms slapstick quite literally.

Steve martin's facial expressions..lol She comes over to see where he went...lol He even added his name as a third at the end just so he could hit him one more time
It's a shame cain and Martin did not do another film together!!! Not a sequel but some other comedy's....similar to Pryor and wilder films!!!

What makes this sequence all the more impressive is that when you compare it with the same "leg-slapping" scene from the original BEDTIME STORY, you see how Frank Oz's staging and timing of the whacking makes it even funnier. Oz understood that sometimes the anticipation of something can be just as funny as the actual occurrence of it.
