Icy Mike: Imperfect
On the Podbean app: icymike.podbean.com/
This is a dirty boxing trick for when you either don't think you can get the collar tie in the clinch, you don't want to get the collar tie, or you just don't feel like getting the collar tie. This has applications in any rule style: boxing, kickboxing, mma, muay thai or in self defense with no rules.

@@hard2hurt There is one technique I really wished to see pressure tested by someone who understands fighting - Eye gouching in a clinch: catching your opponenets face and stucking your thumbs in the eyes right next to the nose (where the tier gland is) and push him back. Love the fundamental high % stuff. My coach use to call that "the collar pry!" All part of clinch fighting "Wall-N-maul series." In the Jits with hits series, we also used almost the same thing on the ground. Basic frame escape from the the bottom, or to pressure play/ bug the neck from the top.

Some rule like "every 20lbs bigger = you need 1 more year training to beat them", might work but there's just no way to predict any outcomes with it. It can't account for like fifty things and variables that go into winning a random fight. That's why the first rule of self-defense is to de-escalate until you can't. Hopefully your training does negate their advantages, otherwise why train at all? If I train to fight only big people for instance, I might lose any time I can't be faster than the guy.

Great stuff! This reminds me a lot of Wing Chun kung fu that often gets a bad rep. The aim to break the opponents posture, attack weak areas like the neck and throw in explosive short range shots are all there. The problem often is many don't train WC as a dirty boxing style and stay at longer range posing like Bruce Lee or Donnie Yen!

I have had this conversation with many people. I practice self defense with friends from time to time and have attended self defense seminars. I wish I had more money to train more often but I can't so I do what I can.when it comes to size power and strength you better believe that it does make a difference. Its very important to learn effective techniques for both small and large people. When it comes to physical confrontations you have to be able pull off your techniques before the other person can regardless of your size.at the end of the day it pretty much comes down to your skill level training and experience.if you can try your best to stay out of fights and walk away if you can but if you are forced to defend yourself, you do what you have to and hopefully your level of training will be enough to protect yourself.

I was training in the gym and some girl wanted me to show her some basic self defense stuff, so I showed her some basic tricks how to keep distance. • @hard2hurt

She was leaning back because she was uncomfortable, because you made her uncomfortable. The icebreaker to self defense training for people who are uncomfortable with contact is padwork. Unless you're asking for pickup lines lol in which case I am no expert but I would say just be yourself and stop touching strangers.

As I am thinking about it, she was ok with putting her palm on my face, but as I made a small step against her to show her, she can easily hold me back, she started to lean back instead of pushing my chin. Yo Icy Mike! Quick question- I did tkd for 10 years, and recently Ive done Muay Thai for the last 2 years. Would Judo be a good choice to add some grappling and throwing knowledge? Cuz man, Ive got decent striking, but a guy charging me, throwing me, or taking me down sounds pretty scary cuz thats well out of my comfort zone.

I would try jiu jitsu or wrestling. At a good bjj/ grappling gym you will also learn takedowns and some judo throws cause wrestling judo and bjj were designed to complete each other. So I think its better to start with BJJ cause you learn fighting from your back/having someones, the whole submission area while still learning how to fall and learn correctly and mixed with some basic judo amd wrestling techniques you have a complete base on ground fighting. You could also just work on takedown defense and submission defense as a muay thai guy who uses clinches a lot and use it to capitalize with your striking. And the great thing is you can train no gi or with gi to make it more realistic for self defense situations.

If it's a self defense situation that technique puts you in a perfect position to eye gouge the other guy, or pull a weapon with your right hand. You basically have the other guy's head immobilized. Even something improvised like a ball-point pen to the nose or eye will end a fight real quick.

Here's the 2 major strikes that are effective when you're small : HEADBUTTS AND BALLKICKS (high soccerkick) 1) Your skull is at the level of your opponents chin : advantage for the small one. Moreover headbutts are perfect diring cliches and you don't wanna break your hand by throwing punches 2) no need to throw fancy headkiks when the tall dude in front of you have his pair of balls at perfect soccer kick position. 3) extra : large hands are more likely to break : let the tall opponent break his hand on your forehead when you can throw any shots that will land on his chin

Good stuff! One move I alwasy see from the bigger guy who pulls a clinch is the next thing they do is rip the person violently to the ground. I would love to see a counter from your partner ripping you to the ground.

So my muay thai master is showing me trashy techniques. He showed this exact technique, and a variation of It. While you have one hand in the neck framing the opponent's clinch, you use the other hand crossing the one that's framing, and pull the opponent's head to the side, so you can knee the head or sweep.

Hey mike, can you roll under a head kick from a person who is much taller than me? I got kicked in the head today in sparring, but the second time this dude tried the head kick I instinctively rolled under and it worked just fine, I connected with 2 hooks to the body. Just wanted to know if this happened because he is 6’2 and I’m 5’8 (both with less than 4 months of fighting XP), or if it would work in a real fight.

Hey Mike, what do you think about the ichigeki kickboxing? It's a kyoukushin mixed with kickboxing created by Francisco Filho, I dnt know If you know him, a k1 champion, It has graduation based in t shirt colors and has some kihon, but its trained in more of a fighting rythm, not the super static kihon forms from other karate style is more popular here in Brazil, since it was created by one If you dont know it, I suggest you to search

@@hard2hurt Yeah, it's a manner of mix kickboxing with the karate system, like the adapted kihon It's interesting, I didnt know shit about this too, but I started yesterday lol, I thought kinda legit, It's a kickboxing with some flavor like you say about "pratical martial arts" kung fu, or kyoukushin with punches in the face and boxing, Francisco Filho himself sometimes come to my city to graduation exams and training Do you think I should continue or this sounds bullshit to you?

I have been watching a ton of videos on this channel lately and practicing a lot of stuff I see on here for fitness and just to learn some decent form. It seems like in most videos though, the theme is "this skill will not work in a street fight". Can anyone point me into a video that covers what is best to do in a street fight scenario? I don't plan on getting in any but I live in Baltimore so you never know. But from watching videos on both this channel and many others the list of things that aren't effective in a fight are: boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, body shots, leg kicks, grappling of any kind except maybe a little bit of clinch work, and many other things I am surely forgetting. Any chance of getting a video on the very best skillset for a street fight or guiding me to it? I can't imagine that the wild haymakers and rapid fire strikes that people throw in street fights are the end all be all. Of course the best skill is avoidance, but there has to be a few things that work with reasonable efficiency. At least for self preservation if things do end up getting physical

Have to admit, I've taken this and that from your videos to my own training. Like just the small things, movement basics and postures. I really like your way of teaching, you're not taking a role in front of the camera (at least it feels like you're not :D ) and you have a good matter of self-critic in every video! And, you have to do a Bas Rutten impersonation!

The point isn't that punches from the clinch don't hurt, it's that you are asking to be elbowed into oblivion with your hands that low and your face unprotected.
