Taping the intake is such an underrated tip. Every time I went for a ride, I would come home and wash the bike. I would avoid spraying directly into the intake but probably got more water in there than I thought. I would have so much trouble getting the bike started and be worried I was losing compression or getting my carb dirty. This last time I taped up the intake before I washed it, and it fired right up so easily. I’m going to cut myself some foam plugs to fill the holes during washing.

Jay, same here accept I do remove the air filter, shove a rag into the inlet just in case, and put a waterproof cover on it...that way I can get a clean airbox. I don't do that every time...use tape sometimes if not too dirty. Only other thing I worry about and so don't use is the pressure washer. In the past I've forced water into bearings...just chicken to use one any more. Scrubbing bubbles...LOL...I have to try that...I have always used a diluted solution of Simple Green.

I wish I had a patch of concrete to wash my bike on. I live up in the mountains and its all dirt so I wash my bike on the stand over the dirt and then have to move it into the garage to blow and hand dry the bike over a wood floor. It's pain and all my neighbors are water nazis since I live in California and on a community water supply. I also get home late in the dark so rarely am I doing all this immediately after a ride... There usually is a drainage on the bottom, remove the plug after washing and the water will drain out of the airbox. And the filter will also dry if you leave if for a while. But if you dont spray it to start with, you dont have to worry.. 😁 covering the holes or just avoid spraying close to them usually works good!

My 2020 KTM 300 is almost 1 year old and has about 70 hours on it. I removed the seat/tank and thoroughly washed it after every ride but I broke my rad shroud on the last ride so I put a new set on. The new plastics really showed how badly the original plastics (and the rest of the bike) are beaten up. So screw it. It’s just a pressure wash to clear the mud from now on and I’m happy not to care about its appearance any longer.

TIP: After washing spray the whole bike down with wd40 so it's covered in a thin film of oil. It prevents corrosion but the main thing is it prevents dirt from really sticking to the bike on your next ride and the dirt rinses off much easier afterwards. Another tip, instead of buying expensive cleaning products just mix some dishwashing liquid & clothes washing powder in a bucket of warm water, it works really well.

Never understand why people power wash their seats. You have to gently hand wash the top/wipe it down. Hose or PWing just saturates the seat foam, and males it crazy heavy and breaks it down. Can't believe you lay the bike right down on the ground with no stand , Jay.

I love how thorough you are. However, I completely disagree about using a pressure washer. All that will do is push water into places it shouldn't be. Like behind the o'rings of your chain, into your linkage bearings, or any other bearing for that matter. I agree that pro level riders do it the way you've described, but, most of them don't have to buy their bikes, have mechanics maintaining them, get a new one every year (at least). And it's important for their bikes to "look the part." For us gumbies, a hose and bucket will do. Its a bloody dirt bike, they are supposed to look dirty.
