Michael Mann is a tremendously talented director. I have grown up with his movies starting with Thief, starring Jimmy Caan! His NBC series Miami Vice was a trend setter with style, flashy cars and music . The GQ look. Always love the shining car hood and wheel rim shots. Every Michael Mann movie is great from Ali to The Last of the Mohicans, Heat and Collateral Damage . One of my all time favorites is Manhunter. Til this day there’s no Hollywood scene better than the downtown LA shootout in Heat. Michael Mann you are a Hollywood Icon, a true Legend!! Thank you for your creativity and entertainment for the past 40 yrs.🎬💪🏽

I also love a tv show called Vega$ which was created by Micheal mann or he at least wrote the pilot for it. Terrific show that is fairly underrated and not a lot of people know about. That's one of the first things he did in his career was creat that show.

I'm old enough to have been blown away in March 1978 by the quality of Mann's ABC TV prison film "The Jericho Mile," starring Peter Strauss. Three year's later I sat in a theater watching his feature film directorial debut "Thief," and thinking both James Caan and Willie Nelson deserved Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Everything that would be hailed as groundbreaking three years later in NBC TV's "Miami Vice" (a show Mann executive-produced) was already front and center in 1981's "Thief." Thanks for this one, Rich.

They wanted a return to big cast epics and to reward big cast epics - hence Braveheart. The Insider won the Best Film and Best Actor Oscar. Thief was great but not necessarily an Oscar pick. The rest of his films were a little too corny and/or cartoony for Oscar picks. Ali was a bad film, disliked by critics. Public Enemies wasnt the high standard of Heat and Insider.. and Collateral MiamiVice and Blackhat were great for the fans and audiences.. but a little bit silly for the critics.

Mann is a genius really, and he's not making this for the mass-market really. Have to respect that. He knows the cast is key to success, like George P. Cosmatos with Tombstone, the right talent to tell the story... So interesting to hear that Heat pre-existed and was turned into the L.A. Takedown script, and was later made Heat in it's own right.

I still wish that "Neil McCauley" had gotten away and hooked back up later with "Sherlis". Together they form an even more formidable "Crew". "Heat" will always be the best " Crew" movie. For some reason my favorite part is while waiting for a call from Van Zant, Neil has Chris' wife under surveillance. After he busts her and explains to her the options he tells her " clean up and go home". Never once mentions it to Chris. That's a leader.

Michael Mann physically resembles an American Werner Herzog, and his films, although at first glance may seem very different, grapple with many of the same issues. Herzog pits his characters against nature from a global perspective, while Mann pits his against human nature from a very American perspective. I'd like to see a conversation between these two.

I think John Leguizamo would make a terrific casting as hanna is a sequel sidequel or whatever it is that would be an adaption of the book. Because michael mann has said parts of the book take place in the early 2000s which is a little more than five years after the original. Some people have said Timothy chalalmat, but he's not even 30 and pacino was at least in his mid 50s when heat was shooting so Leguizamo would be terrific casting.
