One of my favourite Dire Straits songs, maybe the easiest to introduce people to Dire Straits with its shorter length and flirtatious teasing lyrics. You're 100% correct. Mark Knopfler is a master songwriter and lyricist, while being one of the most emotionally literate guitarists to grace the mainstream. The other members like John Ilsley were consummate support players. Dire Straits backed their musicianship, dynamic live shows, and lack of pretense, they weren't trying to be fashionable. The public responded by making them one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Not every Dire Straits song is "happy, go lucky". Some are brooding like "private investigations" and "on every street", bitter sweet like "Romeo & Juliet", wistful and cathartic like "Going Home", or beautifully devastating like "Brothers in Arms" Check out Brothers in Arms, live at Wembley 1988, Nelson Mandela's Birthday, with Eric Clapton on Rhythm guitar.

I absolutely agree with you. That old saying...Less is more...is so true for me. Love your reactions. They're awesome. I recommend Tunnel Of Love - Sydney Final Concert 1986, Money For Nothing from that same concert and Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits - On The Night 1993. Just a few suggestions. Thanks 😊. All the best. Cheers from Australia🎸🎸

You see, Becks? Dire Straits is simply a one-way ride. And in this one, Mark kills it all the way. You should try with "Brothers In Arms", a ballad but with so many emotion and really heartfelt. And of course, you cannot skip "Money For Nothing". And about Mark's solo work, "What It Is" is a great song as well.

"Sveiki" Rebeka! I agree Dire Straits has tightly constructed songs primarily featuring the guitar work especially Mark Knopfler. His speaking style of singing is unique and places most of the emphasis on the musicianship. You sound like you are coming out of the woods with that sickness so hope you are fully recuperated soon. Take care beautiful!

Dire has a great sound on this song for a live version. Mark Knoff has a very distinct voice and playstyle.... You have to react to this one if you haven't yet "Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live)". This version has real high energy....Thx Rebeka ...

Mark Knopfler is a prolific songwriter and didn’t stop after Dire Straits. He actually wrote the Tina Turner song Private Dancer. When you’ve finished exploring the exceptional Dire Straits, maybe take a look at some of his “solo” work. I say “solo” but he still has a superb band with him. As I mentioned at the time, your last reaction was to his new band rather than Dire Straits as it said in the title.

I think you'd really love the live performance of Money For Nothing from the Music For Montserrat concert. It's Mark Knopfler post-Dire Straits performing this Dire Straits hit with Sting, who's on the original studio version and got a co-writing credit for Mark's use of his melody from Don't Stand So Close To Me, Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton on second guitar, plus Phil Palmer, Dire Straits' last rhythm guitarist too. They really rock the Royal Albert Hall and the orchestra and choir, who aren't playing or singing on this number, are clearly loving every minute.

Try "What's the matter baby" from this Rockpalast concert also. You can also move on to some Mark Knofler solo stuff. Try "What it is" from a night in London. Check out "Postcards from Paraguay" "Song for Sonny Liston" & " Done with Bonaparte" from the AVO Sessions. I like that you don't feel the need to do your reaction in the middle of the performance & we all get to enjoy. Have fun!

When you don't have a voice to any significance, the song and musicianship must stand on their own, and pay more homage to the song. Dire Straits are a good example of this; less-is-more. The song (the melody and lyrics) is KING! Mark Knopfler's policy.
