Episode 356 of Love At First Scent
This was a KZread Live broadcast streamed on Monday 27th March 2023. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, I reviewed the new Diptyque L'Eau Papier, composed by Fabrice Pellegrin.
Introduction 0:00
Diptyque L'Eau Papier (Fabrice Pellegrin) 4:52
Here’s the blotter update:
- A definite thumbs up from me. The woodiness, the mimosa, the vanillic quality: they all remain coherent and intact right to the end. And more impressively, they also remain gentle, subtle and haunting. L’Eau Papier never shouts, but it is distinctive and alluring nonetheless.

[* In November 2020, I was commissioned to complete a writing project by the brand Amouage. The project may or may not have a bearing on the scents released by the brand from 2021 onwards. At the time of writing this note, my intention is to continue mentioning and reviewing all Amouage scents released up to the end of 2020, except in posts/articles where perfumes from several brands are included and presented as part of a selection/collection (eg ‘best of’ posts and lists).]

No wonder I love this perfume. I am a water colorist, and love all things paper.

Ah, that’s interesting.
I have this scent. And it kinda reminds me of those powdery scented papers i used to write in as a teen. The scent is very quiet and subtle but I hugged a friend one instance and she started crying out of nostalgia and told me she loved the scent very much and she also bought one herself - she said it reminded her of her late parents who used to send her letters in those powdery scented papers. I'll never get tired of this scent - reminds me of a trip to the library or that freshly printed newspaper on a quiet morning.

I love this description, thank you. And thanks for reminding us all that subtlety is often a virtue.
I recently tried this at a store, liked the scent but loved the stacks for handmade papers on which the bottles were displayed. Such a cool touch. About the fragrance I feel it is a handmade but very sophisticated paper dusted with French powder. 😊

I received a preview sample with my last order. It reminds me in part of the limited edition Paris candle from last year (green glass with wooden lid) that was described as old books and paving stones. I'm finding it strangely compelling and am very tempted to add to my diptyque library!

Hi Prof Persolaise, I have loved this review, especially since I've been visiting family in Bristol and at a funeral in Tunbridge Wells. Apres mon voyage...malade. Yikes. Whenever possible I've looked at your KZread posts. A home away from home for me.☺️ I've only watched this now, a month later. Whilst you talked about this fragrance and Fabrice Pellegrin's open comments on his process; I kept thinking of the Cuban cigar factory "Reader" perfume which sounded lovely. I love a basmati rice toasting smell but many fragrances now have a cloying note I'm still trying to identify. Great comments from the fans.

Ah, I hope you get better soon, Clare. Thanks for watching.
A couple of weeks ago I was in the office, waiting for my copies to finish printing. I turned to my coworker and said “I love the smell of freshly printed ink from the copier, I wish this was a perfume”. The other day while in the store, I was checking out the dyptique boutique and sprayed this on paper. I definitely found the steamed rice there, but it was gorgeous to me and so I sprayed it on my skin. Without knowing what this scent is supposed to embody, I smelled my wrist and turned to my partner and said “this is it!! This is fresh hot printed ink on paper right off the printer!” I had to buy it! I love it so much, I think it’s so unique. I’m extremely happy with my decision to purchase this bottle. Dyptique is one of my favorites ❤

Bought it last days and I instantly loved it, it' s very well done and even pretty unique inmy opinion. Thank you for this review! I briefly smelled this new perfume and though I'm neither a huge fan of musky nor steamed-rice accord fragrances, I liked Fabrice Pellegrin's interpretation of paper quite much on first impression. It's soft and etheric and not a literal translation of paper. Though I love the smell of old books! :-)

I’m asian so the middle part really reminds me of a sticky rice with coconut dessert and pandan leaves. It is a very comforting scent to me. I just bought it so it seems like a skin scent but i hope it does project a bit as i use it.

@plasmichoneytrip

@@mayaraschade3371It’s the first thing I have identified only because pandan leaves would be used in cooking rice and sometimes infused in desserts. Unfortunately, this is only prominent in the opening but once it settles down, it smells like a strong ambroxan scent like that of Juliette has a Gun or Another 13 which to me smells screechy at times.
From memory the Byredo Bibliotheque was supposed to smell of an old library (with paper, old leather bindings, dust , wooden shelves etc) rather than an interpretation of just paper itself.

Didn't CdG have a photocopy note in either Odeur 53 or 71? I can't seem to remember but I'm sure they used it. I keep thinking that L'eau Papier would be amazing as a candle..hopefully they will do it later on. Thank you for a lovely review x

I've enjoyed layering this with Clean Reserve Skin. The praline in the Clean reserve help bring out more of the slight vanilla sweetness of L'eau Papier. But I also enjoy L'eau Papier on its own. It just feels effortlessly chic.

For me, i cant find Ink there. It smells like subtle sweet musk, a musk that smells Newly born baby wrapped in highend linen. It had slight sweet milky rice paper on cedar drawer. For asians it smells rice-popcorn. Crazy rich asians will love it cause due to very warm climate, it stay clean, sexy, hygienic.

To me paper „smells“ dry/dusty, sweetish and slightly vanillic. Hope one day it will be captured. Will try the new Dyptique for sure. I don’t think Iso E Super would fit because Iso smells wet. Thank you for your as usual very eloquent review 🤍

I think they really catered to musk lovers. Once I felt this beautiful creamy sort of musk I was sold. I am sensitive to smells, and this concoction was created impeccably. IT slightly reminds of me the photo developing smell. The undeveloped photos emerged in water under pink/red light

Aging paper was wonderfully bottled (among other smells...) in L'Air de rien. Sadly, I was really excited by l'Eau Papier but weirdly (it's only me, I know), upon smelling it I was taken to a pet store and buying bird seeds for my canaries as a kid 😅 I don't know why, but that's the only thing I could smell, bird seeds!

@Persolaise this sounds quite reminiscent of James Heeley’s Blanc Poudre - the house unfortunately is more of a miss than a hit with me, personally, but I remember being fond of the rice note… not creamy, but a more creamed powder as opposed to baby powder, if that makes any sense 😂

@@Persolaisewhy have I never tried this before? I sprayed Fleur De Peau on tester strips, and neither my wife nor I could smell it! I told her this was my 2nd notion and boy howdy! 🤠 there a bit of the musk I sense from the base of Cologne Indelible, but the opening and journey is so far and away - so calm, so pleasant, so right. So much more interesting and beautiful compared to Heeley’s Blanc Poudre.

I am a big Diptyque fan, but this one gave me a papier cut!! It quickly turned sharp and nostril numbing in its cloak of gentleness, and though I could pick up steamed rice in the opening, I failed to comprehend why I would need that on my skin, clothes, or anywhere but in my sushi bowl. The perfume industry is trying too hard to maintain creativity (when it's not all about commercial identity), and it shows. Perhaps they should stop trying so hard, now that would be Zen!

I don’t get the paper part, as an Asian, I agree with the comment below, it smells like rice, but for me I don’t get the coconut vibe but it’s quite intense either as rice or paper, which is contrary to what I understand from both element, the musk on me is quite strong it’s like enveloping the rice element so the latter peeking out of the aroma here and there….it’s a skin scent but nothing majorly reminds me of paper nor rice ….

I was looking forward to this one. Too bad I missed it. Well a comment it is then. What’s your opinion on L'Ombre dans l'Eau from them? So far, I’ve tried seven of their scents and this one comes out on top. The one at the bottom is Fleur de Peau. I think of a hunched over granny getting on her compression socks. While endearing, I somehow want to keep my distance. Also, I don’t understand why they keep Eau Rose (which is quite dull) and release Kyoto (which is an admirable beetroot and rose scent) as a limited edition.

It does not smell like paper, book, or magazine at all! To me, it smells like a sticky (coconut) rice pudding with pandan leaves…a popular thing in asian desserts. It also reminds me of a muted L’artisan Parfumeur’s Le Chante De Camargue and a bit of File de Dieu by Etat Libre d’Orange.
