Keep it up, just change the background so we can differentiate between games you're comparing and talking about and the shelf behind you 🌹

I remember playing Diplomacy. Good game, but definitely a little long.

Yeah. I did like the game. But, after several long, frustrating, and unending games, I lost my epitome for this game.

This is a fun matchup as I like both these genres and have or have played many of these! I love Diplomacy, but concede that in person I haven’t been able to finish a game in the proper manner usually playing around 2-3 hours before someone needs to go. Each time we’ve approached someone’s end time we play until the end of the next year and whoever has the most centers wins. It’s a little less satisfying and all. One of the experienced players I played against recommended the Game of Thrones game listed here. The problem with that is the IP usage. Anytime I try to do IP games you get like maybe half the people more interested in that theme and the other half not interested at all! I have Cosmic Encounter and need to get that one played to try it out. Eclipse too. I’d love to try Twilight Imperium sometime, but the only time I’d probably get to try is at a convention and using a full day on it where I usually have some other things I must do is not really feasible. I had Scythe and sold it after playing some one else’s copy. The combat though interesting only sends the losing unit home like you’re playing Trouble. There’s also no exploration. I won in my play and felt pretty let down. You’ve put Dwellings of Eldervale on my top radar shelf, congrats!

Diplomacy and GoT both rock on the PC versions. Cosmic Encounter probably will not stay in my collection due to gaming group: though I personally enjoy the game. Eclipse rocks so hard, I have only made one house rule about ship customization. I wish more people would have the time to play Twilight Imperium. I agree that playing Scythe for combat leads to meh results. Stonemair clearly wanted an economics heavy 4x. I cannot recommend Dwellings of Eldervale enough: simply fantastic game.

I don’t think you’d love it based on this video, but for 4x I love Star Trek: Ascendancy. It’s long and has a lot of dice rolling luck, but it’s fun. Another game I’d pass along in the genre is Hellenica. It has an option for set map or a tile map for exploring. The combat is still dice just a little less luck driven I think. If I’m not mistaken you can’t really exterminate someone which is probably good for people who don’t like player elimination. My first game with a group of four took like 6 hours, but the next game months later with 3 took only about 2 hours though both were without the exploring map option. There is a sequel set in China I haven’t played yet, but looks even better. For this genre I’ve also seen numerous recommendations for Clash of Cultures, the Civilization games, and Dead Reckoning.

Thanks for sharing. Star Trek appeared to definitely check boxes for Thematics. Never heard of Hellenica, I assume an Ancient Greek based 4x?.

I have not played that one yet. For click reasons, I aimed for ones I had either played or that I knew had a large fan base. I have seen Clash before, do you think it stands near the top?
