Dip-it or not Dip-it. Plasti Dip.

Dillon asked me what I thought about Dip-it product, Plasti Dip is the product I used and here is what I think.

Naturally the volume is going to be reduced the more you use. You can use a broad sharpie marker on the inside of a can (or whatever your choice of dipping vessel), so that you can refill to the same level between each dip.

Yes, but you always need more, I always have left over that is a waste and this stuff does not hold up very well, I think if you use your tools a lot, it wears too much for me.

You’re not getting the point. The thing is that one can won’t do it. Ur going to have half of the can or more waisted cuz is not going to be enough to dip something else unless u buy 2 to refill every time u dip a tool

Channellock uses a hot dip vinyl and I can't find anyplace that sells it for homeowner to use. Sometime I use rubber or vinyl tubing, they both work great but it's never gonna be a super nice finished look because the tube just has to be cut off at the end of the handle. I've also used some truck bed liner that I have in a gallon can and that works pretty good...........I know some people use heat shrink tubing but I'm not sure I'd like that as a grip for most pliers.

I just bend the plasti dip can to accommodate wider handles and when it runs low I add toluene like the instructions say. Sure it thins it out but you just need to dip more. This stuff works great for me so far. I’m interested to see how it holds up.

I find it does last but dip gets dirty quick, and the cost of using it of old used pliers, to me, is not worth it, I would rather just polish the handle clean, I do like material that Cresent AND Channel lock uses but it is not sold outside of the factory, that material last forever and is cleanable.

I love the texture of SnapOn plier grips. Wish I knew what material they use, I’ve got a batch of pliers that need redone. I really don’t like the slick Channellock grips. They’re definitely easier to clean but way less comfortable.

I've been looking for a good solution for my tools but can't find anything I like. Have you ever tried or considered wrapping your grips? You can buy grip tape for bicycle handlebars, hockey sticks and tennis rackets. It might be a possibility. Another option I've been thinking about is a thin binding of leather. I think that would look pretty classy. 😎

Plasti dip worked great for me, i have restored some old tin snips which i use daily, the trick with plast dip is to tilt the can, and after you have done 2 or 3 coats, use a knife to cut in the edge at the top of the handle. I prefer it to the plastic factory handles. And i dont care about having stained handles as they are tools at the end of the day

I agree on what you said about how to use Plasti-Dip, but the cost and the feel of the tool with it on is what I do not like, I would rather have smooth metal handle if that's all over the dip, some of my tools are used in a sterile environment and have to be as clean as possible and the training I had with old timers I have worked with of the years have pounded into my head to clean up, organize and use your time wisely, I just made a video about using heat shrink tubing as a coating and it works great and cheaper to but it is not for all handles! I thank you for your input, I welcome every comment, it is always good to see other prospectives.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't we all just agree, then, that Plasti Dip is just not good enough? A polished handle is always better. A painted handle is always better - I coat my painted plier handles with clear coat I wonder why there is no available version of a coating for plier's handles, that's as good as the coatings that come from the plier manufacturers... Obviously, there is a market for it

Yea, you need two cans of that stuff because as you dip an item you lose volume in the can so you either add more to the can or you have to cut the can down to to get the same coverage unless the handle is to long and then you can not cut the can down but add more as you use it, plus this stuff is not cheap and dirt and grime just sticks to it, I have found heat shrink tubing is cheaper and a better product!
