DINKY TOYS RESTORATION BLAW KNOX BULLDOZER 561

Blaw Knox Bulldozer first appeared in Meccano Magazine in January 1949. Originally numbered 561 - renumbered in 1954 to 961. Production ran until 1964, later models had plastic bodies and driver. I bought this in a job lot. It looked in a right state. It was all there except for the tracks. Made a few mistakes in the build, none-the-less I am very pleased with the finished result. Love the colour scheme, glad I chose the green tracks over the black option. Hope you enjoy watching.

Hello David - an excellent restoration - as a young boy in 1949 I would have loved to have one of these but 11/6d was just too much - I think my parents were paying around 4/- per week rent at that time so the cost of the toy would have been nearly three weeks rent! I remember that Dinky Toys were the Rolls Royce of toys in those days. I did manage to a collect a few at the time and they were cherished and kept in their boxes after play sessions. Thank you for the video and the happy memories that it brought back for me.

Hi - wonderful comment. I am fascinated by the original prices myself. I do much research using Meccano Magazine (all editions since 1934 are freely available online). In he good old days the prices always appeared on the advertising. Its easy to assume the toys were cheap - but you are right - they were certainly not. My 1st months salary was £30 - and that was in the 1960s !! - 11/6d was a tidy sum in the 40s and 50s. 😊👍👍👍

11/6d was a *lot* of money for a toy bulldozer in 1949; must have been quite a prestige model. As you were wrestling with it, I was thinking "No wonder it's lasted 70 years." These things were built to last, great quality. Presumably, the tracks would perish eventually, no matter how well it was looked after, so the only real damage was the driver's hat blowing off. Shame it took his head with it !! 😁 A lot of work went intro this restoration but the result is beautiful, in an ugly duckling sort of way. The wee splashes of colour, the driver and the tracks, bring it to life and you can just about imagine the joy on a bairn's face back in 1949, when he opened the box on his birthday. Great job David, looks fantastic.👌 Cheers for now, Dougie.

I would not now be happy until I knew today's value of 11/6d (£0.57). Using an on-line calculator it comes up with a value, in today's money of £27.20p. Now that's actually very good value. Have to bear in mind toys like this are now aimed at adult collectors. Yes the 'rubber' would perish eventually but there are many toy vehicles existing from this era, and earlier, with original tyres. Every time I see a headless Dinky driver I will buy it 👍👍 Great comments to receive - thanks. Enjoyable to do - it looks wonderful in my collection Thanks ... David

Great video , very fiddly one this time. Nice outcome in the end . The only thing I noted is the audio is a bit distorted in places , in this and the last video. Maybe it is being recorded too hot in the camera. Maybe consider a lapel mic or turning the level down so it does not peak over -6dB? Hope that helps. I personally use a separate audio recorder such as a zoom h4 to record and monitor the levels , then sync up the video in post. I should mention that use headphones as I listen at night to KZread videos. Best regards Leney

Thanks Paul - yes I was very pleased with them. I thought they would probably be a slack/sloppy fit and look terrible, but they look great. I got these from Ebay. My normal supplier is closed through the lockdown so I searched ebay and came up with these (you can also find them in black). They were only £3.50 I think, although there was probably some postage cost. The only tip I can give is make sure they have a ridge on the inside (centre) to fit in the grove on the wheels. The originals did and it prevents the tracks from slipping off. Hope this helps ... David

Thank you for another great upload. I was wondering why you did not just chop the head off of the reproduction figure and use that as the replacement. As a war gamer it is something I have often done. Chop, pin, and glue. Seeing your work with Milliput was good though.

Hi David. Good question. Actually I have had the repro figure for some while. I bought it for a Field Marshal tractor (will restore sometime) that has no driver. I pointed out the arms were thicker on the repro figure, but the torso was more slender - so I decided to make a new head to match the more robust original casting. - and I still have a driver for the tractor. Yes, I understand the value of the chop, pin and glue - great way to repair or add variety. The thought did cross my mind, but I was happy with the result. Thanks for the comment, always appreciated ... David

I would just decapitate the reproduction, drill the head to accept the post you put in the body of the original. then match the colors of the reproduction figure's clothes. I enjoy your precision and humor very much, David.

Hi, please forgive the late response - you must think me rude, but I have done very little to my railway etc for a number of months. I can't offer a valuation for stock - I have not got that broad a knowledge. Anyway, you have probably sorted it by now. Just thought I would apologise 👍👍👍
