6 Way Rotary Switch: www.fretnation.com/custom-6-w...
Hey everyone! Today we're taking a quick look at my Dingwall NG-3 that I've customized. We ditched the stock 4-way rotary switch and Darkglass preamp for something a bit different... a John East MMSR 3-band Stingray preamp and their passive tone control add-on module and a Dingwall 6 way rotary switch! The quality and variety of tones that this bass has available is nuts! Let's check it out!
This bass (does not) and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

Yes! I ordered a Dingwall from their custom shop in Canada, but they don't offer any customization for things like control layouts or preamps - you have to choose from their list of options. Seems kind of limiting to me, especially when you're paying Dingwall prices for a custom shop bass with a 1+ year wait time. Very cool to see Lobster bravely going where no Dingwall employee has gone before.

ith this mod, you've built the bass of my dreams. 5 basses in 1: double humbucker, P-Bass, StingRay, Jazz-style, 3 humbuckers. Plus, the outstanding cyberpunk look of Dingwall, with a bit of steampunk gave by the orange/bronze color. Dingwall must adopt these modifications as a new standard! Just in case: get a patent for this so at Dingwall they'll have to pay you to get this mod officially, ahah! (I want that bass) Cheers, Joe

@@LowEndLobster quick question: do you know if Dingwall pickups can be wired in single-coil mode? I have a Dingwall on order and I got the idea of swapping out the the 2-way series/parallel toggles for each pickup with 3-way toggles for series/parallel/single coil. I've never heard of anyone doing this before so I don't know if a) it's possible or b) it would sound good.

Love IT!! Wonderful info. I will doing this eventually. This will hopefully open the door to use a familiar instrument in many more situations. Has been said (and I believe it) that Dingwalls have a very distinct tone that pushes them out a lot of recording situations. I really think this mods fixes that. And also delivers the newest tone (D-Roc) without the need to buy another instrument. Awesome idea and thank you for the video!

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed this. I am very pleased with the final result, and this bass in its current form has absolutely earned a place up on my wall. I agree with what you said, the darkglass combo with these basses is very distinct. You have some flexibility, but you can never really escape 'that' sound. With the east preamp and the 6 way Rotary, I feel like I could take this bass anywhere for any situation. The EQ controls, passive tone control, and the 6 way rotary make this thing a tonal swiss army knife!

I have worked on a relationship with my NG3 and I am ecstatic that you did the work and gave me an idea and way to go with my bass that she will be welcome where ever we go. Thank you so much!! Do you have any ideas for more tonal options using the switch? Instead of a kill switch? But a kill switch may be awesome for solo looping fun. Building sound scapes to play along to. Cheers!
