Ding Liren destroys Lu Shanglei’s kingside in 24 moves
Featured is a Round 5 game from the 2012 Chinese Chess Championship between Ding Liren and Lu Shanglei. The opening is a Queen’s Gambit Declined, Three Knights, Vienna variation. Ding Liren’s 5th move shows his willingness for gambit play. Lu Shanglei takes him up on this offer, and attempts to defend his kingside that is without a key defender. Ding Liren’s attack is relentless, sacrificing multiple pieces in order to destroy the entire black kingside structure. Ding Liren’s remaining white major pieces and an integral 6th rank pawn secured him a brilliant attack.

Really shows that grandmasters today may have a preferred style, but will absolutely play in any style the position calls for. Usually Ding plays very solid, but in this one he went full Mikhail Tal.

He definitely played a sacrificial attacking game but I think classic Tal is characterized by kinda unsound sacrifices that lead to insurmountably complex positions.

Ding has definitely shown he’s capable of some filthy sacrifices. Check out the queen sac against grischuk with Jeffery Xiong commentating

I love the analysis in these videos. I feel like im learning so much as opposed to other channels.

Glad you like them!
Top notch stuff as always! I like the detail on King knight for queen's knight. Also Aron Nimzo put it in a simply beauitful way: "Exchanging the tempo consuming knight for the newly developed knight represents another loss of tempo, because as the Black knight disappears, so do all the tempi it has consumed to get there, i.e no trace of them remains on the board." That in addition to like you mentioned, the amount of tempi the queens knight needs to get involved. it's this strategic understanding that gives birth to tactical audacity and imagination

Thank youuu bro! in the example nimzo gave the knight wasted like 3 tempi before trading itself.. so this is a bit more subtle.. but i liked your explanation anyways and it reminded me of his quote
Of all the chess content on youtube, this channel has the best analysis. For example if anyone else covered this game I doubt they’d explore the relevance of the king knight/queen knight trade; they might mention that the black king lacks defenders (if your lucky) but they won’t explain how that came to be with as much depth as you. Nobody else explains positional chess as well as you do!
My favorite chess game analyzer! Thanks Jerry!
What a devastating attack. Apparently Ding can be a ferocious attacker.
Great video Jerry, really enjoyed it. Thanks! Although it did bring home to me just how far I have to go before I could play anywhere near the level of these guys!

Thank you. 👍 Small steps to improvement 😎
Such a dominant position from so early on, and a masterclass in tempo. Thanks for the analysis Jerry.
Holy moly, that was a complicated attack. Absolutely brilliant.
Thanks for this video. I faced 4...dxc4 yesterday and, though I recognized it should be an inaccurate move, wasn't super comfortable with the pawn sacrifice. The attacking ideas here are very helpful. One small correction at 13:16. Though Rf3 spoils the win, Rf6 is winning and even the top engine move.
eating pawns is my comfort food. there is always another game you can play and you have another 8 pawns to eat.
If Ding plays like this against Nepo we will have an awesome WC! What a player 1️⃣

Loving the videos, Jerry. Hope you had a great new years
Ding is always a fearsome opponent. This game looked more like Morphy - NN than a 21st century game!
great coverage !
Hope you have a great new year Jerry. Thanks for the cool videos
Another great analysis.
Really appreciate your unique and fascinating analysis of this game! Especially drawing my attention to the different roles of the respective knights

ding won and had fewer major pieces, wow
Strong Powerful Game
This was a good one to examine for such ending games.
Ding Liren had his opponent in a bind, amazing.
very nice
Sharp!
So many sacs. GG

Wow, Jerry's on the spree! Much Jerry, much wow!
good, good
I think Lu Shanglei did pretty well seeing as he played without his queen side pieces, fair play to him giving the up-and-coming Ding Liren a chance 😁 If I ever get to play Ding I'll be doing the same, whether I like it or not.
Hi jerry
Where did the squares in your analysis go Jerry? I'm disappointed 😂😂
What was the time control?
Can we see the kramnik magnus game :D
At 12:13 what about queen d7 sacirficing the queen to play the rest of the game with material imbalance?
I sooo hope King Ding will be champion
Why not Rf6 at 12:49 instead of the pawn push? With the idea to double up on the f-file and maybe play the immediate Rg6? Please help me

Mostly kingside attack is of this very nature having watched several games of this type may since 2023 January my new chess phase after 15 years gap.
Anyone has the Carlsen-Kramnik game reference?
2:40 just give a check
That's why you dont play a useless h3/h6 -> the 3/6 line rook needs it ;-)
Why did Ding Liren cross the chessboard? To get to the other side of the game!
