DINAN E34 M5 - One Take
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Matt reviews the classically styled E34 M5 from 1991. This M5 came with a high-revving 3.5L Inline six, but was punched out in period by DINAN to a 3.9L that makes, in theory, 390 HP. So, does it drive like we all want it to?

The best M5, straight six, manual gear box, analogue not digital, proper seats, much of the car is handmade, superb build quality, etc etc.
All these One Takes are NOT helping my unhealthy BMW obsession.....I love it
these one takes are amazing and should continue. i look forward to these!!

Simply great to see a guy appreciate his own old car. And what a great car it is.
To be fair to the crazy guy that died, he wasn't driving but it was his car.

Great talent that went to waste. He probably could have been a great race car driver.
umm can i get some props for Andrew? Def one of the best people ever had on one takes! knowledgeable, not too chatty, very humble and polite. loved him. this is probably my favorite one take ever.
Ok, this is my favorite BMW on here so far. Holy crap! It sounds amazing! And 1991? Dude ...nicely done. I am trying to keep an 80s and 90s car alive and can really appreciate how well you have kept this car. Great work! And great review as always +TheSmokingTire
One takes are great. I enjoy the interaction with the owners but on the same hand love it when your brutally honest when your solo! The array of vehicles that you drive is very diverse and keeps it interesting for yourself and viewers alike. Carry on Matt!
thanks to both of you for sharing! awesome one take! please keep this up Matt!
Wonderful car, meticulous and caring car owners are rewarded for their hard work in bringing awesome cars like this beauty back to life. I also enjoy seeing a humble and gracious car guy talking about his car. Great job Andrew! Keep up the great work Matt!
i like the one takes because it allows matt to bring more content more often. To me thats better than a well edited video thats only uploaded once a week.
Really nice to see someone looking after a classic the right way. Thanks for sharing.

Kaisuke971 I certainly didn't wish for him to die, don't get me wrong. And yeah youre right, he never killed anyone, but he was getting close way to many times and I simply can't understand why people sympathize with him.
Great one-take! I never get tired of this stuff.
the guy who died his name is - georgi tevadze. Search "need for drive" in youtube and youll find his profile, a lot of crazy stuff there. he died in a car crash but he wasnt driving, he was a passanger. His friend drifted it into a tree with his own bmw...r.i.p.
This car was absolutely awesome when it came out (late 1990?) in the States. It still is, and will be worth a small fortune in the future. I can remember when my dad got his silver 91' used that same year. Had less than 1,800 miles on it. I was only 10 or 11, but when he picked me up from school in it each time, I felt like the king kid of the world. Everyone and no one stared at it. A wolf in sheep's clothing, although that M5 badge was bad-ass in the front grill.People forget this car could blow the doors off (almost) anything at the time, and was the fastest production sedan ever tested by various mags. This car is more special than people realize, and driving one is awesome. It had such a quality, powerful feel to it. Truly a special car, and the steering was dead accurate, despite its porky weight. Always dreamed of putting that s38 motor in a z3 or, better yet, and e36 m3
What an incredibly clean car ! Extremely nice.
Also mad respect for keeping a great looking completely functional stance!!! Hate modern car all low kids.

Loving all of these
The road at the beginning looks absolutely scenic!
Yeah man! I was hoping that you would do an e34 m5 review after that sweet clean 540i you did. Great vid and an even better car. its a beauty, loving it.
These Smoking tires videos are awesome. I like the fact that Matt really knows something about cars.
I would love to see some more one takes in another country like you did in NZ. Obviously I know it is all about the costs. Either way these are great!
More 90's vehicles, loved this! Beautiful car.
My red 1991 E34 has only 150 hp with smallest 2.0 engine in the family, but I still love driving it. Red makes her special. And 2.0 has special awesome engine sound. Had to watch this video. I never miss red E34 vids)
Wow, Matt. Can't say enough good things about the new roof camera. Not only better FPS but so much better rendition of detail, color, etc.
Nice M5! And I for one am enjoying these 'One Takes'.
Fabulous.. Fabulous car.. love these e34. Thanks for sharing.
Keep doing one takes!!! There awesome
The S38 Enine in this car is a "evolution" of the M88 engine that came in the original m5, and the S14 is based on a M10 4 cyl engine block with a shortened M88 head.
Classic car.. great looking car. would love to own one... thx for another awesome episode.
absolutely love these M5's
YA! E34! I love those, my mom had a 530i and it was the first car I ever did a burnout in, good times!
25 years and it' running like a charm. Not sure many car compagnies can do this today...
gotta correct a little mistake there, yes it's a racing engine that has been put in the E34, but not from the E30 S14 series, it actually comes from the F1 series, which this engine started it's life by being chopped into half from the F1 desing and became the power plant for the famous BMW M1 as the M88 and became the S38B36 on the first gen E34 M5 and the E38B38 with 200cc bumped displacemnt and with 24 extra HP on the second gen E34 M5. The S14 was a whole different deal of racing engines stricktly focused on Group B Rally and WRC plus the WTCC/BTCC which the BMW E30 M3 ruled at it's time.

Wow, thanks for that, you seem to really know about the derivation of these motors. Do you know if the S50 engines mainly if the S54 is properly race derived as well?
@mariuszanfir2298
9 жыл бұрын
Juan Galvis As far as I know S54 is not a race derived engine. It's an evolution of the Euro S50B32 and neither was used in professional racing (again afak). The straight 6 racing engine of that generation was the P54B20 - 2 liter, 285 PS @8800rpm and one of the most beautiful intakes I've seen :) Just look at it - www.flickr.com/photos/39333584@N03/5360923011/in/photostream/

Juan Galvis The S50 series engine was developed from the M50B28 single VANOS engine, it didn't came straight out of a racing engine family, but BMW M division did put all their knowledge from before they had with the S38 series and it's older variations and put them all in the S50B30 on the E36 M3 (first Euro ones) and then came the whole S5X family up until the E46 M3 finished production, Then they kept producing it for the infamous Z4M, which in GT3 series they decided to go with the new V8 (S85). The 3 series straight six M engines never actually made it in any major racing events, but on the side events as amduser86 mentioned like VLN and so on, the S5X series engines thrived and were quite popular for their time. It's sad that BMW now a days dropped the whole racing engine developing for street cars and just went with modifiying their current engines and putting them in M cars with couple of snails strapped to them.
I had a rental Chrysler 200 that had a reasonably-low beltline. Really not a fan of how tiny every single window is these days. Thanks for another great video!
Can you imagine pitting this BMW against a Cadillac of that era? Heritage is not water.
Beautiful M5 Andrew!
e34 is awsome, love the way it looks, sweet video folks

You have a wonderful job Matt! Keep the reviews coming! Also, this is one of my favorite cars, and I'm seriously thinking of getting one. I think I will stick with the 540 because the M5 is just too much $$ here in Toronto.
One of the cars that made me fall in love with BMW, why can't they build awesome stuff like this anymore (not to say the new cars aren't great, but as matt say they're more of a tuned street car than a de-tuned racecar). And to those complaining about the one takes, sure they're not as good as the polished videos, but at the end of the day we get to see far more content and it's cool to see what other people are driving/doing to their cars and how they stack up, even if they aren't all 500whp stripped out track monsters. Keep doing what you're doing Matt!
E34s finally getting some love... *Woah 60fps is trippy, looks like a video game.*
Great sound
With the E34's. I'm loving it.
That guy was Giorgi Tevzadze and he wasn't Russian he was Georgian bro :) He was drifting in the streets of Tbilisi and he died in passenger's seat :)
no chill means you bring the heat you got that 🔥🔥🔥
Great car, great host, great owner
Great vid on a wheels that deserve it! Thx.
Awesome car, some shorter ratios would really wake it up though! :) I also wonder if replacing some bushings in the steering system would help make the on center more direct.. Vagueness on center seems to be such an unfortunate issue for old performance cars.
Props Andrew great car! another reason these reviews are the shit!!!
Impressive video.
Love this car!!!
60fps looks incredible!
1:54..Gonna have to disagree ...the S14 was derived from M10 block and M88 head....the M88 was in the M1....and the detuned version in the E28 M5;the M88 evolved into the S38....used it the E34M5
Matt you should review an E39 M5! It's my dream car and it would be a nice car for a one take video. I'd like to see it on Drive but that's the show for new cars.
this format adds huge reality
Class will always be class and the 1991 E34 M5 really is a fantastic motor car
Damn, I had to do a double-take at the beginning of the video. The kid with the M5 looks like the long-lost brother (the Asian version), of UFC Heavyweight fighter, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. He looks to be a big ol' boy. I bet that was a big selling point/consideration, when he made the purchase.
25 years old and these things still look great today

Dirk Diggler best looking 5 series ever!!
Seen this exact bimmer at my gym. And asked the guy if it was a real M5. S/O dude 🤘🏻
I think the 540i is actually lighter in the front due to the aluminum engine. Also crazy ass chemtrail at 4:30
2 e34's in such short time? You're too kind Matt. Still loving it, best buy ever without scene prices going through the roof. Only thing I dislike about it is the front suspension design, but nothing some welding can't fix :)

devilskullBEL That and the steering box, I don't like them at all. Even though these are different to your standard box.
@im2tall1

That single piece control arm crap used to wear out annually on my old car,it got to a point I stopped buying the aluminum, and went for the cheaper steel arms.Easy to swap, but when steering wheel started vibrating at speed, and hard braking ,it feels like it wants to shake itself apart!! I don't know why,but I miss that car (barely).
@devilskullBEL

Didn't know the steering boxes of the M5 were different than the other ones. Seems like I have some dismantling to do as I have a 2.5tds but have a complete M5 subframe with sway bars, suspension, etc lying about :p Never had any problem with that im2tall and never heard anybody else having that problem either. Sounds like something else was causing that. They wouldn't have used that setup on so many cars if it was an actual common problem.

devilskullBEL As far as I know M5 box is a faster ratio. Like it's a good box, but it's still a box. Much prefer my E30 with E46 rack in it :)

fellowship of the goat Always nice to learn something new. Even though it's true that the box isn't the best, to me, it comes with the car and it's feeling. I've been around the Nurburgring in mine (I live in Belgium, 3 hours from it) and was very pleased by how well it went. As Matt says, the moment you actually start turning, you do feel what you're doing.
"When there's no double yellow you can't cross the double yellow."
394bhp from the 3.9 stroker is SICK! Throw this engine in an e30 M3 for a period swap and that car would be a monster. Adding carbon hood and front fenders would make up for most the weight added and what’s left would be the perfect car for an old BMW car fan like myself.
hey matt, you should try taking up an offer on a e60 m5 :D would love to see you review one
I'd be really interested on your one take of an E36 M3! I think its the best chassis bmw's made, even though we got shafted on the engine.
Such a nice car!
Well done sir :-) Well done :-)
Clean classic
This guy makes every car feel like granny shopping trolley.
You should find someone with an ISF (preferably a 2010+ so it has the Torsen LSD) and review it i'm sure you'd love it and many others would as well. It's a car often forgot about and doesn't get the glory it deserves
im liking the e34 love recently
beautiful quality car
Makes me miss my '91 M5. I do have a V10 and there's a similar vibe in that you have to wind it way up but it rewards with a rush. The V8 feels torquey but there's not quite the same sensation of power building. All great cars though.
I spy with my little eye an e36, I do hope that it will be in the One Take series.Other than that great review Matt! Keep'em up!!!
That's badass that it's NA like that, no turbo tuning b.s. like the new cars.
This thing is sweet, I'd love to own one
Andrew is a cool kid. Respectful too.
Car seems like it drives smooth like butter going on perfectly on toast.
The BMW plant here in South Carolina builds X-Series and Z-Series, I believe.
Yes that is what I love, fully loaded party machine E34 m5. Some years back I was driving one of them E34. This is THE best city car :-P ever it's size, weight, speed, acceleration, responsiveness all in right spot. I can get alpina wheels.
those e34s are awesome...now time to try an e39 m5
first the 540i now this ... e34
Love that hellrot red
Andrew, you have a really cool E34; it's one of my favorite BMWs of all time. I like how you didn't fuck it up with stupid aftermarket shit. I would prefer it a tad bit higher, but other than that, it's awesome. The color is really perfect, too.
TheSmokingTire No updates this week? There is a void in my life without one takes!
the e30, just the base model is one of two of my dream cars. i will own one. restore one. drive it as my daily. the e30 is by far the sexiest car ive ever laid my eyes on. also keep the one takes up man. i love to see different cars. i love to see you drive to be honest. might sound weird but its a thing. imo keep them super rawr. fuck editing. i seriously love the format. @TheSmokingTire
it wasn't a russian guy on an m5 he was georgian ! Giorgi tevzadze may he rest in peace he was one of the brightest tallents of street racing and stunt driving ps:loved the M5 :)
Last hand assembled M series.Rumor had it that the test drivers could tell which one of the 3 "teams" (Mannschaften) assembled each one by how the individual cars drove. In other words there were 3 subtle variations of handling in this model. He also got rid of the problematic stock suspension, a common mod. As to the crazy russian, he died as a passenger in his own car, go figure.
This thing fucking moves
