Made a big difference to the sound of the engine. Going to pick up one soon too for my e36.

@Dellm40 the whistle comes when the intake manifold switches from long runers to short runers usualy around 3500rpt to 4000rpm, the manifold on the old e30 engines was a solid long runer pice and not to forget that e46 has VANOS.

Fellow BMW owner, '00 328Ci, and it's been through more mods,big&small than I care to think of; currently, it's got a ESS TS2+ (customized, >16psi, built motor, +lots. Back in the N/A days, I made a "FrankIntake" using a 330C/i CF Dinan Tube, aFe ProDryS Cone Filter & Stg1 Heat Shield, and Samco 4ply Silicone 3.5" Tubing (from Dinan TB-to-Intake); Heatshield/3.5" were wrapped in Gold "Heat-Proof" foil. Intake kicked butt. +9.2rwhp and +8.5rwqt on Dyno (98ft elev, 72*F, 55% Humidity)

Nice sounds perfect good place

All intakes induct and filter the incoming air. In a stock vehicle a stock intake will suffice as the engine does not need that much air to run. The E36 intake is quite restrictive in comparison to other vehicles of it's class. Most restrictive part is to the breather hose/ram air duct leading to the front where it falls to approximately 2" diameter. This can be overcome with a small dremel tool by removing the duct and enlarging the whole before the filter. This is simple air box modification.

Check your idle control valve , Check ignition coils and check the disa valve also check for leaks and cracks in intake housing Im having the same issue as we speak

@fuadarab This whistling sound you can hear is the intake sucking in air which is why it's only noticeable after a certain RPM when it's really sucking in air

Dinan has a waaaay different sound thats nice.

So this is why my friend's 330 sounds different from my 330. I have not checked his system, but pretty sure.

@enzolara well, it is pretty rare to find the carbon fiber one now, but dinan sells like a matte black one the same size and stuff, but the carbon fiber one looks sick!!!

@nabassu. I am not sure what you mean? Yes, with my Frankintake I maxed out at a hair over 9rwhp, which is around 13.8bhp (crank hp), and is actually a huge amount of power gain for an intake on a car with a total engine displacement of less than 5,000cc. The most important part was the heat shielding, which resulted in just under a 5rwhp gain compared to the exact same intake w/o the shielding.

Continuing my last comment: an after market intake will be far less restrictive. From what i can see however is that this kit does not replace the boot or MAF tube which is also restrictive. I run full 4" tubes and a 4" filter in my E36 M3. Remember this filter is only of benifit at WOT Now when you really need the new intakes is when you replace your cams and or injectors to keep up with the new air/fuel consumption

The bmw design already looks so good. I cant see this having any gains besides sounding nicer.

Follow up: for the record, I am running a 2.8L I6 (Mahle Forged Pistons/Rods, Ferrea Titanium Valvetrain, Forged BMW Motorsports Crank, ARP Full-Kit, etc), ESS TS2 Lysholm Twin-Screw Supercharger with Front Mount Intercooler (customized heavily) @ 18.5psi on 93oct pump (full boost from 1225-8125rpm), and a full 35pg of spreadsheets worth of mods. Baseline is 432.7rwhp@7860rpm/406.8rwtq@2355-6115rpm. Thus, a 9rwhp gain is much less significant than it sounds.

well it's a touch louder, but the original "Cold air intake" takes the air directly from the BMW kidneys. there is no better place to get air from. it's optimized. Fun and louder, but not more.

so you are saying that all that money and work can only "tune" the factory by 9HP? how can i place this post you in top of every internet car forum?

+Chris Canela I just had mine fixed, literally this week. Its the metal bearings from the fan belt going bad. Whistled at high rpms the exact same way. And my car is stock as well.

Yes, I have it on Z3 2.3 with the Dinan chip. According to Dinan should always be installed with the Chip tune. I have to go to a California "star" smog place but once the mechanic gets over looking for any illegal mods , the car passes easily

holy shit, that fucking turbo whistle is the gayest thing ever! I'm selling my e36 m3 Dinan CF CAI along with Dinan Throttlebody, and freeflow exhaust. Going turbo, no need for it anymore.
