'EONIAN' marked another milestone along the ever developing path of DIMMU BORGIR. Co-Produced by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMORPHIS, AMON AMARTH), it featured a real choir and a unique artwork by famed artist Zbigniew Bielak. Long time keyboardist Gerlioz (SATYRICON, ex-APOPTYGMA BERZERK) also returned to the fold. For both the band and the listener, 'EONIAN' might represent their most ambitious and challenging work to date.

As a high school art teacher, I love symphonic black metal. It touches my soul and relaxes me. I have been listening to DB for over 20 years, and I think they are the best! Many of my students have grown to love them as I play their music daily in class! Eonian is FANTAST:C::

I'm about 15 years now, they still kill it. I'm so happy for them even if they don't get the acclaim they should. I actually discovered them by the MV of Vredesbyrd that was on the DVD of Alone In The Dark. I just found out they played Ozzfest in 2004, I was at 2003 so I never got to see them. Kinda wish I had gone the next year, could've discovered them sooner. 😭😭😭 I would've traded Chevelle for them easily, even though Chevelle is from my area.

I can’t really understand why people tend to compare an album with previous band’s releases before they become “commercial”. What this and many other bands had to offer in the music, they did it and they changed the face of music, now they still deliver really good music and many people wish they could write material like this one and have their production or even their sales. Just enjoy the music people, ok it’s not for “true” black metal fans, we are in 2021 though...

In an interview the guys say they've lost any number of fans over the years. When asked how they were regarded in Norway, Shagrath said "as outcasts hahaha"... He said Black Metal had all these "one dimensional rules" and that they were always about breaking them. True artists with vision and not prepared to compromise to outside pressures on their art. I just finished watching the interview actually. So inspirational to any artist. How to have success , longevity and continuing inspiration and evolution in what you do. And have balance in life. These guys have their heads screwed on. Love Dimmu.

Personally, I really enjoy their transformation into the symphonic, a journey they have embarked upon since Euphoric Misanthropia. In many ways, this album reminds me of the Iconian Gateway from Star Trek where each song is of a different world that you can visit at a whim, almost a microcosm of their whole discography. As a critique, many found the choirs at the top of their lists of concerns which is not the issue. It is the "raindrop" keyboards on almost every track that I found personally obnoxious. The real test of the strength of this album, amongst the body of their collected works, is simply this: If you could listen to only one album of theirs which one would it be? Eliminate that one and choose another and so on. Where would Eonian be on that list? Unfortunately, I find myself not choosing this one for a while, despite some of its wonderful aspects...

I absolutely love the evolution of dimmu borgir. I dig their black metal roots, their symphonic transformation, and this culmination of their efforts and experimentation thus far. They have carved their own path through the darkness.

I have been listening to Dimmu since "Stormblast" , they have always done this "melange" of romantic elegant tunes and insane black metal vibes :) like a count Dracula dancing waltz with his female wamp.... now they went a bit more into sth. like Epic movie music à la Two Steps Frome Hell, or Audiomachine....anyway Amazing Art !!!

es un excelente disco a pesar de no ser, en este caso, un disco de black metal... las críticas empiezan a lloverle cuando se intenta encarar con esa etiqueta. Con mente abierta y no esperando lo ya dicho, es maravilloso.

At first I didn't want to like it because I freaking miss Vortex and Mustis something fierce but so far it isn't bad. Not chill inducing like a lot of their older works but not bad at all. I have a HUGE soft spot for Orchestras, Choirs and more classical performers playing with metal musicians. I'll say this album is listenable but not life altering.

I had lost interest in the Borgirs from Death Cult Armageddon onwards. But I'm pleasantly surprised by this album. The way it starts is suspiciously similar to a song called "I Am The Gateway" from Nightbringer and their "Ego Dominus Tuus" album (an amazing black metal band and album), but quickly departs from it and goes into its own territory. Once again, a pleasant surprise this album. You can tell they really tried to break out from what we are used to hear from them.
