Very few reactors, if any, provide background context to the songs they review. This song, S.O.S. is a song from a French musical, "STARMANIA" from the 1978. The character, who sings this in the play, is a French revolutionary. He and his girl friend are at a violent demonstration against the French ultra authoritarian government. His girl friend is shot and killed near the end of the play. He is singing this song over her body in the streets of Paris. It's an intense song of loss and mourning. I saw the 2021 Dimash Digital Show of S.O.S. for the 1'st time, which you also need to see!! I had just read that Dimash is a super environmentalst . I felt at my first hearing, that it was his reaction to the destruction and death of our planet. I guess one can have many different interpretations. No matter, it's one of the best songs ever and you're right, Dimash is just unbelievably talented!!! All the best!

In this version in Slavic Bazaar Dimash used more classical techniques than in others as, for intance, the melisma at 3:50. In the 2021 version he replaces that melisma with a electric guitar. In that later version he resources a bit more to pop and r&b techniques. “SOS d'un terrien en détresse” tells of an earthly being that is in distress and asking for help because he never felt well in his own skin, he better wants to be a bird to see the world in case it could be more beautiful when seen from above. Luc Plamondon wrote the lyrics of SOS about a very distraught young man who just lost his lover causing him extreme questioning of his own existence. Finally being by her lifeless body, he is able to let her go “in peace“ with the words ‘sleep, my child, sleep’. It is a part of an french Rock-Pop opera released in 1979: Starmania. One of the 5 most difficult songs in French language. It was recorded by Daniel Balavoine in 1979 or so and Grégory Lemarchal won of the French reality singing competition Star Academy 2004 with this song.

There are three official versions of this song. 1. Singing competition “The Singer” in Hunan, China 2017. This was Dimash’s breakout performance and catapulted him to fame. It’s my favorite of the three, maybe because it was the first Dimash song I listened to, maybe because of the incredible backstory. I highly recommend checking it out. 2. Slavic Bazaar 2018 - the song you reacted to in this video. 3. Digital Show 2021 - your first Dmash reaction video. All of his concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic so Dimash performed this online show for his fans. It may be his best of the three.

Chinese is my 2nd favorite, only because he messed up the lyrics in that performance but if you don't understand French it does not matter... he may as well meow along to the tune and it will be great ... This one is technically most perfect one and his french is much improved since!
