Dimash is in Distress???

Музыка

This is a new segment to my channel. It is called Xploring Asian Music. I hope to introduce people to the marvelous artists that Asia is putting out into the world. My first reaction is what many people call the best vocalist in the world today. His name is Dimash Qusaibergen from Kazakhstan. Highly talented, professionally trained, comes from an established musical family, and has won many accolades.
Showcasing today, Dimash appeared for the first time on a Chinese singing competition show in 2017 called "I am a Singer". Some of the best vocalists in China compete on this show. Dimash entered on a wild-card placement and finished second in the competition. His opening song is the one I will use today. It is a French song from a rock opera in 1978. The song, "SOS d'un terrien en distress" propelled Dimash onto the international stage.

When I first heard Dimash all those years ago, I thought the same as you. For a year, Dimash was all I wanted to hear. Then, I was introduced to so many other talented artists and I realized I was missing out on some great music. I agree that he is probably the best vocalist in the world today, despite him lip-synching. I hope that you can break free a little bit of your obsession and discover the remarkable sounds that are available to you beyond Dimash.

When asked by an interviewer, what genre of music he leans towards, he replied, Neo-Classical. But this talented young man does ALL kinds of music. The I Am Singer competition has a rule that only a Chinese singer can win the grand prize. But all of the exposure brought through that competition and all of his performances from it being on youtube has blasted his fame and popularity to the moon.

@@janettetippetts7942 Dimash had European fame when he entered the Singer competition. Once he was exposed to over a billion people in one country (China), he increased that fame and fortune. After the competition, through KZread and video reactions, those number continued to grow. Now, I would love to hear your response to this next part... I think, after all these years after the Singer, he has not kept the Chinese market engaged in his music and career, as he went back to stay relevant in Europe. I do not mean he has lost fans, but the Chinese have moved on to other musician that have replaced him as number one in the list of musicians they listen to regularly. Knowing how much Chinese youth idolize things from the West, I suspect Taylor Swift and others from America and the UK have replaced Dimash on their phones and other music players.

@@billg7531 My opinion, of course. Like most reality shows, it's highly manipulated. There may have not been a "rule" per se, but Jessie J only won the following year because of the uproar after Dimash did not win the previous year and the accusations that he did not win because he was not Chinese. You're a Hua Chenyu fan. C'mon, is there any way he could have (or should have) lost to Jessie J, in China? Jessie J sang well enough, but Hua Chenyu was objectively better by most metrics and should have won. They let him win in 2020 to make up for it. No non-Chinese has won the competition in any other year.

@@dihathaway7076 I agree with your logic. I have always held this belief. I was merely pointing out to Janet that a foreigner had won on the Singer competition. I also agree that Dimash should have been the winner, but the CCP couldn't lose face, so they gave him second place. As you mentioned, the obvious winner of the following year should have been Hua Chenyu versus Jessie J. Again, the CCP was trying to please the people with that decision. They just got it all wrong those two years playing politics with a game show.

Have you even seen "The Story of One Sky", War & Peace, Omir, etc his classical collaborations with Lara Fabian, Aida and Placido Domingo. Fanatical DEAR fans find it difficult to accept any criticism about Dimash without losing your minds over it. Thankfully, not all DEARS are fanatical. I was mere pointing out that I do not think Dimash has the same passion and quality in his newer work than he did when he was working hard to make a name for himself. As for the MJ thing, it is true that he likes to incorporate the MJ moves and tones in his music, especially the later pop songs. As for his folk music, it is still very good as he is singing about something that he feels very strongly about (his home country).

Hi Bill, While I don't disagree with you regarding Dimash's "MJ-ish" type of performances, I do not agree that they are defining him as more of a pop singer of late. Dimash continues to feature his operatic and his traditional songs in his concerts and other live performances with the pop songs simply being interjected as breaks from the others for those who enjoy them. He has always done these types of songs and performances even long before I Am a Singer. It's part of who Dimash is. In "El Amor En Ti," he transitions from Pavarotti to Michael Jackson in the same song. Dimash always has been and always will be all of those things. It's no different now than it was seven years ago when he was performing "The Show Must Go On," "Uptown Funk, " "Give Me Your Love," "Golden," "Tribute to MJ" and other strictly pop songs. Like you, I prefer the more classical and traditional songs but the point I am trying to make is that nothing about Dimash is different now than it has ever been. He has always been able to do it all, and I suspect he always will be able to do it all. And we will never expect any less.

I'm sorry. At what point did I say "they" were defining him as a pop singer of late? I just stated that I do not like the MJ style that Dimash is trying to copy, and we do not need another MJ 2.0. Of course, Dimash does continue to sing in the multiple genres that he began his career with. He just does it better when he is in competition mode, or singing about his country and culture in which there is a huge amount of passion.

Sir, I cannot agree with you about Dimash, that his music has lost that, for lack of better term, "X" factor that it had when he was doing competitions. You are entitled to your opinion, even if you are wrong. Have you listened to Dimash's "The Story of One Sky" or .... wow, any of his music post "Singer"? Yes, he has done some more pop sounding songs, a few, and they have the magic. He never did music to earn money. He did it because he loves music. He is as magical today as he was when doing competitions. You have misled your audience, so I must take everything else you say with the proverbial grain of salt. Dimash is a gift from God, possibly the best singer/musician/human being in so many generations, it could be hard to count them. He is a kind, generous person. This will be the year he turns 30, and at his young age, he has made the world a better place, more and more as the years pass. I am in my 60s, and look forward to sharing the planet with him as long as God allows it. ((I only heard of Dimash 4 months ago. He has been blessed by God with a voice that is unparalleled in the music industry. I agree that is the best vocalist in the world today. But, I refuse to place people upon a pedestal, and in personal interviews, you can see Dimash does not like that status either. I stand by my commentary and my opinions. I do not think they detract from his greatness, but shows that he is human and changes as most humans do as we mature.

@@billg7531 Thank you for your thoughtful response. I must agree that some Dears take things too far, and give Dimash nowhere to go but down, the pedestal is so high. I don't put him on a pedestal and stop allowing him to be human. There are a few times when I've felt sorrow for him to know part of his life is to give, give, give, give all the time, and he dare not fall below 110% or some people will be disappointed. Was that handshake too short? Did I let someone down? There's another marriage proposal; Keep smiling; will the tide turn? His music has to evolve as he himself does. I think he will stay humble. But there will be changes. Not necessarily bad changes, but some won't like them. And he's not a boy anymore. He is a man, and a man's dreams are different than a boy's dreams. If he wants one, will he even have a chance to find a spouse? I worry about Dimash that he will struggle with always these high, superhuman expectations on him. He isn't superhuman. He's human with many blessings by God, and his own hard work. I am glad you threw out the pedestal, and let him be Dimash.

While I agree with most of what your comment said, I do believe Dimash is mature enough and devoted to things far beyond his music to allow much to get in the way of his professional life. He seems to be a very private and humble person, with a heart of gold...at least that is his public persona. I do wish he would work harder at rebuilding his worldwide recognition. After Covid, his appearances have mainly been around his country and neighboring countries. With a few exceptions, he has even disappeared from the Chinese market. He has developed this bubble and has not decided to burst the bubble to expand his fanbase reach. I have even noticed a downturn of the number of reaction videos on KZread compared to a couple of years age. Perhaps he is just taking a break, but as musicians get older, that talent can faulter a bit. As you said, he is not a boy anymore, but a man with bodily changes occurring.

He is ridiculed for his last years for being over-weight and sweating like a pig. Michael Jackson is the same. I fundamentally disagree with your statement that "when an artist loses the need to fight for his fame and prosperity, his music gets worse." Perhaps this also works with other performers, for whom money and fame were initially the most significant motive, and who, having received them, became lazy. But when a true artist does not depend on his stomach, he is more free in his work and can express what he cares about. Therefore, the fact that Dimash "did not starve" only gave him the advantage that initially the main goals of his work he saw the popularization of his homeland, national instruments, the Kazakh language, the popularization of high-quality music regardless of its genre, attracting public attention to various social problems, uniting different peoples calling for peace, harmony, mutual respect and love. But not to do something to please the crowd, for the sake of commerce or to maintain their fame.

I am not sure I said his music got worse. If I did, or your translator claimed it, I apologize. I merely pointed out that in competition, and establishing oneself in the music industry, there is more of a fight, passion, and quality to the early music. We see it in the majority of performers. It could also be from age, in that as we get older, our perspective and character about life changes. There is no doubt that Dimash is still great. If you can not see that, then we will just have to agree to disagree and move forward.

Если вы можете это обосновать - мы послушаем. Если же они вам просто меньше нравятся, это не означает, что они менее качественно выполнены. This is a very unfounded statement - just to say that you see less quality in his latest works than in previous ones, and we allegedly do not see it. If you can justify it, we will listen. If you just like them less, this does not mean that they are less well executed.

You need to continue exploring Thailand and leave Dimash alone. You obviously don’t know much about Dimash, only what you read about him. He is not just a singer, he is a composer, he plays several instruments, and he has a masters degree in music. He wants to be able to sing several genres of music. You’re reading about him but you are not listening to what you are reading. Yes Dimash liked Michael Jackson, he also likes Celine Dion, Luciano Pavarotti, Andre Bocelli, Placido Domingo, and several Russian and Kazakh singers. Dimash comes from a musical family. His mother is an opera singer, His dad sings and his grandmother was a singer. Kazakhstan is a country that loves music. You haven’t been truly listening to Dimash’s music. Dimash has never had to put food on his table. I think you should just continue to explore Thailand and leave the music out of your channel. You are trying to get followers but for you this is not the way to do it. Goodbye and good luck living in Thailand. 😊

I hope he posts more about Dimash and Thailand. One video about Dimash, and one opinion given that is not as glowing as some give does not negate his opinion. Mine might be different--I stated it was--but I would like to know more of where his opinion comes from. We can learn from one another. Dears are the definition of tolerant, so let us be that. There has been no insult given to Dimash. Surely the only response to Dimash is not undiluted worship. He would not want it to be that. He gives the glory to God. We must not raise Dimash to the status of God to be his devoted fans. I have been on an "Across Endless Dimensions" movie video (white suit coat with black lightning veins) loop tape kick, with stops here and there which include "Ikanaide" (Tokyo Jazz Festival) and a few SOSs too. I dearly, er, dearly love those, plus the Placido Domingo Opera duet. I am just so grateful to have finally discovered Dimash a little over 4 months ago. Imagine what is in store for others who have not yet come across his music and delightful personality?
