nice playing Leon. This thing was the cats ass in the studio. You wasnt a studio unless you had one of these. AMAZING how we loved it. i still have mine. my second one actually. plus i owned the OG johnson. Which is where they stole the tech from. Digitech bought johnson amp company. Than they put these out with digitech name. :( Still great product to this day. you proved it.

I found one in a pawn shop for $20 because it didn't work. Someone spilled beer on the unit and it got inside, and it made voltage arc across the diodes in the power section. I cleaned off all the beer residue, and scraped off the carbon arc on the pcb with a pocket knife, popped in a new fuse and it has worked fine ever since. 👍

I always liked the tones and presets of the 2101 Artist better, so long as it has the dual S disc's to keep up with the 2120. In fact, I bought one of two 2101s owned by Steve Stevens (the backup to his #1 that he still has til this day, from what I understand) and it's awesome.

Run an analog stomp box into it. I've been doing that for 20 years and it still makes a tremendous difference even with the most recent wave of digi units around that borderline finally sound identical to valves. I'll bet the farm a dinosaur like this will have new life run that way. *People just never seem to grasp that you can feed a hot, overdriven analog signal into digital gear, but the only modern unit I've had that wouldn't cooperate was the Headrush, and it was such a pile of crap I returned it.*

@@LeonTodd Hey man, You must try the older model the 2101, it have the fully analog tube path. It's a more complicated thing then 2120 because you must make algorithms. You can't use so many effect at one time because of smaller ram i think. But it's worth to try it out because of the more natural sound. Don't get me wrong 2120 sound briliant, but i'm intrested in wich one of them You will like more.

After the MP1 came out, there were several makers coming out with their rack FX preamp processors. I think Carvin even made one that was chrome and endorsed by Frank Gambale. Peavey had the TubeFex and Profex. I had a Zoom 9150 and a Line6 PodPro. This sucker slays both of those.

Man, there were some tones and effects that took me back!!!!!! Now that you have done this video and showed the power of this unit, the price of it has jumped 4 times on the used market! There are still some of us musicians that want that sound and don't have the extra to purchase these new! Meds for the wife, bills and staying alive kinda top the list! Our only hope is to learn of an old device that actually was ahead of its time and still useable today and cheap!

I have had the gold face plate 2112 version of this digitech rack mount for the last 23 years. I remember spending months on months learning how to set it up. Came with a manual the size if a phone book! I ran it through a 120watt valve head then changed to a marshal 120/120 stereo rackmount . To get the stereo effect live. It was an insane set up back then for metal!

There was this cool synth alien effect that I can't remember the name of that was really cool. And it had a cool organ synth. I struggled to get any good distortion out of it and ended up giving it to a friend. Sort of regret getting rid of it. You did a great job getting good tones out of it!

i owned and used the 21pro for a few years and then when the 2101 came out I got that unit. I bought the special edition version with the gold plate and it was an incredible piece of gear....I used it for guitars, bass, ran keyboards through it and even used it on occasion as a vocal processor. it was a staple of everything I did for over 15 years. Then a couple of friends bought the 2112's and I was not nearly as impressed with them. I never really got around to owning or being around anyone who owned the 2120, so this video was cool to see. thanks for sharing.

Nice review! Your playing demos to audition sounds is great. Playing the right things that fit the patch. I still have the purple 2120 and Johnson J12 large foot controller. It’s a shame as I’ve never used it other than an initial ‘check it out’ period years ago, then I put it away as I had other things I used live that I was used to/familiar with. I have a Digitech GSP 1101 w/the large foot controller- same thing. BUT this review is gonna spark my interest in spending some time with it. If not the pre amp tones but for the effects as they sound good and have a lot of adjustment parameters to play with. Preamps/processors just like keyboards- the technology moves forward but just because something is say ‘old’ doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound good and is still capable. It has what I call ‘evergreen sounds’. Sounds that always have a use and can be used in ones tones/effects palette. I have a mint G-Force unit I have to mess with too! I bought an artist card/patches for it but I’ve never used it. A Rocktron Prophecy unit too. I have good intentions when buying stuff but never seem to spend time and sit down with them. I think I have too much crap! G.A.S. - Lol

I bought one about 6 years ago on line for 150 dollars Canadian. For me brings back memories of 80's rock when i was playing full time and making a living from it. Yes its outdated now compared to Kemper, Axe FX etc and also the computer software you can acquire for your DAW's. For me , it makes me smile and gives me hours of enjoyment. Great review Leon. Awesome! Wow, what a memory wormhole...I loved this thing. For me, the best thing about the multi rack fx of this era was the sheer variety of distinct and unique tones available- quite a palette. Great inspo. Ah that reminds me, one of my first "real amps" was an ART SGX LT...dude you have to demo this if you can find one. Nowhere near as deep as thie Digi but still, great meat and potatoes for a young kid... They were and still are dirt cheap and simple to operate. I used it into a Tascam 4 track with a Boss DR550 drum machine to creat all kinds of kickass shreddy rock epics despite its entry level vibe! ART was a cool brand. Cheers

Man Boondoggler, I thought, I didn't comment on this yet, but that sounds like my story, lmao - I had an SGX, and still do, lol. My first piece of rack gear many years ago, bought it new. Despite moving on to a Digitech 2101 and Marshall tube preamp, then other things, I never had the heart to get rid of it, lol...."maybe someday.....". And I recorded into 4-track with it, but Fostex, AND the DR550 was my drummer, lmao......

Great review! In the 90's I used it for guitar but now I use it as a rack effects unit for synths, drums... and yes, guitars! I've created a few effects presets based on real gear: Phase 90, CE-2, Analog and Digital Chorus & Flangers, and even the H910. For the H910 preset I use short delays and a mixer to route the right channel's output back to the input with the original signal as feedback. It sounds tremendous!

Heaven Above intro riff sounds astounding whatever effects you use man. These units never get old. I don´t know if Boss GT5 is in the same ballpark but I´m diggin it with IRs and surprises me everyday. I use it when I practice too much hours (to protect my Triaxis) and It´s totally usable.

Way back when I had a 2101 and that thing was awesome. Basically just went to the user side and tweaked away. Like this model a few of the preset were ok but to make it really sound good you had to tweak it out. Wish I still had it as it was fun to mess around with and for its time it did sound good.

Ran my 2101 into a Boogie 2:90 for years. Awesome tone. Cut my digital processor teeth on that unit. Great effects. In no way compares to my AxeFX but I sure wish I would have kept it just for the sentimental value.

I use to use a 2120 along with the J12 pedalboard out a Mesa 412 cab. it was pretty cool for me. Of course it come down to programming. I used like 5 presets to do everything because the controllers were awesome. It's worth heck ing out if you have the chance.

OMG! I owned such one 15 years before or so. It sucked at gigs, not enough presence, couldn't break trough in a loud band. So I sold it on. However it was fun editing this thing. Nice UI.

I played through a Digitech 2101 for years and they were everything you could dream of in a guitar processor Digitech had a module you could add that added a tuner and morphing allowing you to change from one patch to another and the first would continue to fade out while you played the new patch I even used it on vocals and mastering and still to this day use it for certain things sonically

I got one of these alongside a JEM90HAM in 1998 or so. At the time I wasn't getting the "tone" I wanted but realized that it was my playing, also that I was going direct from the unit into headphones rather than an amp! Ah, live and learn.

I recently bought a minty 2120 Artist and GSP1101. Also nabbed a RP7 Valve and RP20. I'm gonna mess around with em in a loop on my Axe FX III. Digitech have always been cutting edge. I had a new DSP 128 or whatever it was bought in the late 80's. It was way ahead of it's time. I'd buy a new Digitech rack preamp in a heartbeat if they ever designed an updated rack. I noticed a lot of guys that buy the Axe III still keep their Digitech gear.

Thanks Leon, completely agree with what your outline for the 2120 re: Great effects, leave the preamps out... I used the 2112 (with the 2120 chip) for over twenty years in my rack combined with two Digitech 1101’s, a Boss GT-Pro and TC Electronic G-Force. I’ve only just retired the unit (along with the GT-Pro) in the last year in favour of the AXE FX lll, but certainly agree that the digital effectors in the unit are still ‘up there’ with current flux of rack modellers available today. Really enjoyed this along with many of your posts, keep up the great work! 🖖

I have a 2112 that I played through a Rocktron Velocity 250 power amp into a 1960A cab. It lasted almost 20 years before the screen finally died. It was awesome for the time. I got a Helix because I got addicted to the 2112 morphing feature which you can reconstruct in a Helix with a reversed volume pedal on the clean channel. The EOB tones sucked but modulation effects were sweet. This unit has many grandchildren these days. Nostalgia rush here.

I had one of these for about a decade, with a Control 1 and then a Johnson J12. It was all I used. Gigs, all of it. Fantastic. It was the pre-modelling, precursor to what Fractal did. My 2120 eventually started developing issues, ageing components etc. So I ditched it and went for the GSP1101 when it came out. Big mistake. The 2120 was way better than the 1101 could ever be. Then in 2008 I got my first Axe-Fx and never looked back.

Hey Leon . Thanks for this video on the purple monster ! I own this very unit . I bought it at guitar center when it came out and I used probably 25 hours at the time when I was giging here in Dallas/ft.worth . However axis the band I was in dismantled and I stored it away all these years . It is in mint condition. Heck the last time I checked the floor foot controller still had the plastic shield over the display window on the controller. I ran the untit thru a rocktron power amp and rack 422 sonic maximizer which I still own to a full stack . Do a video using this unit thru a effects loop to a mess boogie or a flat response power cab.. thanks for all your videos Joe Beltran

@@LeonTodd Give a chance to the preamp section, maybe it's not so"to the point" like the ADA MP1 or the JMP1 but you can achieve really big overdrive and clean tones with a little of work. Mine is a 2112 model with the upgrade chips 2120 Artist. The Speaker simulation is bad, but there is two ways to use it and you can have more control in the patch mode than global, still bad for rock tones. Just my 2 cents. Sorry for my english, i hope you understand me. Thanks again for your work!!!
